Happy 81st to the living corpse of lyricist/conceptualist extraordinaire, Roger 'Crankypants' Waters! Congrats to him for being among the lucky ones. The best thing to do is to not mention it, just enjoy these special moments if they happen to arise. This subject was popping up twenty years ago, and back then David was trying to avoid these statements. It builds a type of pressure that has no meaning to the music or his reasoning for doing any of it. Having said that, we are all connected through the love we share for each other, it's all good.

@jorgerivero4910 Yes the solos are what I have to concentrate on. " The piper's call " is about as cliched as it gets, but I do like this melody a lot in that song. That, and the track sung by his daughter which he did not write. The rest of it I don't find very hooky. If I was him I'd make an album to be sung by his daughter, as I think his voice is gone.

Gilmour shines when he plays those extended parts in songs such as on "Scattered" and, obviously, the lengthy jam. Nice keyboard sounds here & there including those original Richard Wright parts. Hard to beat Mr. Steve Gadd on drums. Have yet to decide if I'll buy the vinyl album but have purchased three tracks so far from iTunes. More listening to do...

Musically is great, with awesome and emotional solos (I know this is David's signature, but the solo's performances are amongst the best even for him) and a fantastic and interesting blend of music styles. I perceive in some songs 70's Floyd's atmospheres, sounds and textures (Meddle, Wish You Were Here, Animals). Great production, beautifully performed as well (Polly's lyrics are the only thing I still do not appreciate that much). Romany intervention was a great addition and contribution. I feel absolutely thankful that David is still alive and composing amazing music.

Back in the day, when we would have to wait for a new issue of a magazine to get the latest reviews, one would assume that the reviewer listened to the album multiple times. It's kind of odd to hear reviews of new albums the day they come out. I ask you, Sir Barry, do you think there's something to be said for waiting? It may yet grow on me but the best thing he's done since DSOTM? You must be joking Dave! It's all very nice but just too downbeat and gloomy. I'm also not a fan of some of the lyrics. IMO this album is a good example of how DG needs the yin of RW to his yang to get the best out of him.

Felt a little "teased" by black cat, carried on and started to get a little bored, then ,as I started to fall asleep, the strat solo on "scattered " totally woke me up!, felt like David finally took the lid off! Hoping to hear a live never ending "comfortably numb " version of this!,

Luck and Strange best since Dark Side is a blanket statement or as he said to Rolling Stone’s Andy Greene a flip statement and maintaining Wish You Were Here is his favorite. The album is so far great and getting better with each new listen

Romany is one of the best parts. Her and Dad need a full Album. I’ve only listened to parts of each song on the album and it hasn’t grown on me yet. I’m a huge Pink Floyd fan and a huge David Gilmour fan, but I don’t feel like I’m the target market for this album. It feels like a different genre.

Listened to this this morning. Nothing to bring me back for a second listen. A bit too dull for me. Some good guitar work, but voice sounds very tired as do the lyrics. Same old time/age/losing/loss themes done much better a long time ago. But, I guess this could be more relatable now that he is in his late 70's looking back, then when he/they were 30 somethings. I confess to not enjoying the post Waters Floyd very much and this album, to me, is another watery (no pun intended) ingredient added to a post Waters Floyd/Solo album stew with all the juicy meat and veg, to get your brain and body energised, in someone elses kitchen.

Like his other releases, it's not going to make anyone forget about his work with Punk Floyd. It's a mellow, oftentimes jazzy listen. I enjoyed it....probably moreso than his previous 2 releases (which I enjoyed as well). Thanks, Barry.

Simply a vehicle for Romany Gilmour's career to develop. Polly Gilmour's lyrics come straight from Mills & Boons greatest hits and Dave Gilmour's guitar work is safe and predictable. Not a bad album but certainly not deserving of all of the hype. 7/10.

A melancholy and melodic meditation on mortality! Roger Waters may have to give up his title of "Old Misery Guts" to Dave and Polly after listening to the lyrics on this album. That said, this is one of the best albums of the Polly Sampson era (The Division Bell onwards). It's great to hear so many soaring and majestic solos that only Dave can play, especially after Roger was busy erasing all the guitar solos from his Darkside REDUX. Scattered, Between Two Points and Piper's Call are standouts! Let's hope Dave can crank out another album before the snakes and shadows he sings about on this album catch up with him.

I’m disappointed. I know he’s almost 80 but give some upbeat songs. $28 for 2 short instrumentals. His daughter singing lead vocals on a song , and his wife writing the lyrics.
Hardly his best work since dark side. His first album is by far the best. Followed by his second then it keeps going down hill.

A very good and balanced review. I need to look at my expectations of Gilmour, really at the end of the day he didn’t write the album for me he did it for himself as it should be…I can’t expect him to duplicate the playing on his first solo album.
After all he has given so much

Reading through the comments here it is apparent that a lot of people are throwing shade at Mr Gilmour for opining that Luck and Strange is the best thing he has done since Dark Side of the Moon. Did it not occur to any of the naysayers that he perhaps rates it so highly because it fits where he is in his life, and his wife and daughter were involved?

On first listen I was pleased but not thrilled. But this album will stick in your mind and move your heart ... or it should. It's quite something, really. Some of Dave's finest guitar work, and Romany steals the show on "Between Two Points". Maybe as one who is on the wrong side of 50, the ruminations on mortality have more meaning than they would have had 10 or 20 years ago. Regardless, I'm very impressed. Perhaps it is his best work since ... Wish You Were Here.

I love Dave’s 1st solo album, I’ve never understood why it gets slagged off. Maybe I’m extra fond of it because it was the first thing I bought with my very first pay packet from a Sunday job I had while still at school. I got paid £5 and bought that and Neil Young’s Live Rust… They were £2.49 each. I believe I spent the change on a couple of Bubblies!
