I put matte top coat on all of my manicures RIGHT before I take them off. That way I can see what they look like matte and decide if I want to make that polish matte the next time I wear it without worrying that I'm going to ruin my manicure if I don't like it. I just about squealed when you showed LA Colors Fairy Wink. So cheap, so sparkly. One day I was pouring a glass of water from a pitcher, and I got so distracted by the light hitting my Fairy Wink-ed nails that I poured water all over the table. 😂

I never saw the appeal of mattifying nail polish before tbh. To me, part of the draw of painting your nails is the shine. But I think you've convinced me on the positive attributes!

Love the Smith & Cult with matte top coat. I love polishes that are subtle like that. Sometimes I want a more "normal" color but with a little hint of something that makes it unique. I think that polish hits that. I also love the 'velvet' finish of those more metallic polishes with matte top coat. I feel like with glossy, there's "movement" to the polish, and then adding matte makes the movement stop. I like having options.
I’ve never really been interested in matte topcoat, but I got one in the Orly Surrealist box and I can definitely see the appeal. I think I like more for those dark, vampy colors, but I can see it being good for certain nail art looks too.
As a matte top coat fanatic, I love this video. I’ve been using matte top coat for years, especially to get that velvet look. Also, adding the glossy top coat underneath extends the life of the matte top coat- I find they can chip more easily without it

I always admire your skill and patience to create such amazing eyeshadow looks. I tend to just go for a really fun colour eyeliner as I'm just not that skilled wirh creating a whole 'look'. Also it's super quick to do 😁
Yup, I always use glossy top coat first too. It doesn't make sense if your glossy top coat isn't quick dry though. But yeah if its a quick dry top coat, its way easier to use that first, waiting for it to fully dry and then using the matte top coat. Works very well :)
I don't particularly like matte polish but I LOVE matte glitter polishes. Mostly because they look like confetti in a bottle but finding matte glitters isn’t that easy. I don’t know why I never thought of using a matte top coat to make my regular crelly speckle/glitters matte! I wonder if i could mattify the glitter then apply a shiny top coat? I think I'm going buy a matte top coat and try it.
YES matte glitters are my absolute fave. Orly has been making a bunch and I just love them. I really hope they do a full set or even a trio of them soon haha!
Love this! ❤ I think my favorite thing to mattify is magnetic polishes, just because they still have that “movement” but it’s sort of foggy. I can’t describe it, but it’s really fun!
The shiny top coat before the matte top coat is a game changer. I tried OPI matte, and it looked nice at first, then in a day or so, would look like polish that needs changed. This tip makes a huge difference! Thanks for sharing ❤💅

I absolutely love these videos! And I LOVE matte top coat! I thought it was funny when you said you'd never tried multi-chrome polishes with matte top coat because matte is always my go to for them. So cool!! I also just recently tried a matte top coat over a magnetic polish (Holo Taco's Fairy Tail) and omg it looks like a matte marble! With your go-to aura look, I bet it would give a super velvety look. Also really love playing with matte topcoat in nail art for the multi-demetional look. Will definitely be checking out your nail art video about that!

Matte top coat is gorgeous over magnetic polishes with the velvet effect. Also love matte over iridescent flakie polishes and jellies for the sea glass effect. I also use matte before stamping with a sticky stamping polish because the glitter/foil/chrome only sticks to the sticky stamping polish. It’s also great to take a glossy top coat and create water droplets or French tip for contrasting finishes. I’d love to see different ways to use matte top coat in creating nail art. wooooah that dark hair plus stunning green eyemakeup!!!! im in love with that look! (i really like a lot of your combos but this has to be in my top 3. i don't have the know-how or patience to get eyes to look like this but i'm always impressed and love to see it on you. plus the fun hair.).
I’m not a fan of the plastic look or dullness matte polishes tend to give. My opinion has definitely changed after seeing you experiment and swatch the matte top coat over different finishes. I see the appeal and appreciate all your tips😊💗
Wow, Kelli, this video is spectacular! I had no idea matte top coat could be used on everything. I was frustrated trying it to see the dents in my nails become so pronounced. Was ready to toss my bottles. The suggestion to use a glossy top coat first will be a game changer! Thank you for such a comprehensive video.

I am always afraid to use matte top coat because I am afraid it is going to chip a lot easier. I always hate my polishes chipping so fast when I work so hard making them look so pretty. I do have to admit that since I don’t work hands on with my clients anymore, my manicures are lasting longer and I am very happy about that. The only thing that I am not happy about, it that my nails have been breaking a lot more. I don’t know why, because I use Beauty Garde Rocket Fuel as my base coat before doing my nails. They are stronger then they were before, but I guess maybe I have been banging them into things lately. Lol. Great job on the video as always Kelli. You go above and beyond with your videos and we thank you so much. ❤️
this was SUCH a satisfying video to watch! ive never even used matte topcoat before, but seeing it over all the different types of polish has me all kinds of inspired and thinking about how to play around with my collection.
I find humidity is the wild card. I also use quick dry topcoat and then matte on top of it for a "beach glass" look. The manicure was still a disaster. So much repainting! Just a touch of humidity makes it tough to get great results.
Also, I forgot to mention. I'd love to see another linear/scattered holo comparison video like the one you did for the red and silver linears! Or any other comparison videos in general. Also, I'm really missing your makeup 101 videos as well! I love the almost yearly makeup videos haha. I feel like you've taught me so much about nail polish in general. Each nail polish 101 video has something new to offer even if you already know about them! You explain about each topic in an orderly and detailed way! Whenever I have a issue with a particular product or technique, I immediately see if there is a polisj 101 video for it haha. My favorite one is your how to remove glitter polish video, that was a life saver since I love wearing glitter polishes!
Have you ever tried Atomic Polish? They have a pastel neon collection that looks gorgeous… in case you do another video about neons. Anyway I love your videos, thanks for making them!
I just got a little choked up for you and your Orly custom too. As a long time viewer it was so fun to see that happen for you. As a counter to thus video, sometimes a glossy topcoat on a matte polish brings so much out of the polish. Zoya has had some matte collections over the years, my fav being Verushka (emerald green) and Aspen (snow white). On each of them, a glossy topcoat brought out a really, really subtle shimmer that was just beautiful. I don't particularly like flakies, but I love them matte. So many combos!
for more matte top coat options, i definitely recommend trying it over nail art, especially detailed nail art or nail art that depicts actual words/pictures/characters. the matte finish takes away the eflectiveness of any light sources that are causing glare on the nail art so you can see all the details better. also if anyone else wants to experiment with combining matte and glossy top coats in 1 nail, i definitely recommend trying out simplynailogical's multichrome rain drop and branching out from beyond raindrops- there's so many ways to combine both to look super cool.
Yes!!! I definitely needed this, U have a few matte colors but knowing what my shimmery polishes look like Mayte truly expanded my horizon. I’ll look into getting one because the swatches looked so different from their normal versions, almost refreshing These videos ideas are great! I discovered my love for matte nails on accident. I always thought it looked cool on other people but thought it wasn't for me. Then one day I wore nail polish to work (I work in a factory with sanding machines and such) and I accidentally sanded down my manicure on one nail so it became matte and I was like "ooh... I kinda like that"😂
Perfect timing! I just ordered a load of new A England shades and decided I wanted to try a matte top coat, so I ordered theirs. Can't wait to experiment with it!

Oh my gosh matte multi chromes are so fun!! You should totally try the Raindrop mani! You add matte top coat to your multichrome nails, then add glossy top coat on top of the matte using a dotting tool! It looks like little raindrops and it's so cute!
i love what you ended up pulling out for this experiment. it was really fun to see such a wide range of polishes outside of collection swatches. also thank you for doing all the work, especially with the multichromes and reflectives. i’m curious how a solar polish would change with matte top coat and if it would get less sensitive to UV. since i’m currently wearing a solar, and have at least two unopened bottles of matte top coat, i may have to try that experiment next.

I do swatch sticks of all my polishes. The sticks i have have 3 nails on one stick. So i do one straight from bottle, one over black and one with matte top coat. So i know what every one looks like with the other 2 options.
I picked up the sneakers Sinful Colors top coat and it is a matte, but not full on. I recently bought an OPI's matte and tested it on my polish while you were doing your's and I loved it! It makes shimmers turn into glowing polishes, like my PPU's Sassy Cat's Cotton Candy with a matte. It was so pretty!
I've recently been obsessed with the old Barry M Crystal Rocks line (that I didn't discover until a few months ago). They look so different bare vs with a matte vs with glossy topcoat, all great but in different ways!

I do want to throw my vote in for a Short mattifying that 'all-time favorite' of yours: Pineapples Have Peelings Too! (just for laughs) And, if you think it'd fit in the time of a Short, maybe you could do one with the magnetics since so many folks have mentioned it & gotten you curious about it. The aura effect you prefer sounds like it'd really lend itself well to the velvet look mattes often yield. On a separate issue: do you recall approximately how many polishes a Helmer holds? I realize (1) it will vary from brand to brand, so maybe just an average; and (2) this is probably stated somewhere in the vast library of Kelli videos, but it hopefully won't be too much of a pain to just ask anew. 🙃 Thanks for all you give to us, Kelli!! When you said velvety feel. That's exactly how I think of matte. It feels velvety. I like to use matte for a tone on tone look. Do matte and then matte and little drops of glossy or draw squiggle lines with glossy. It's a cool and easy way to do nail art. I hate to lose my sparkles though but with creme and shimmers are grat with matte. I love this video. I like the longer video. But you probably know that already. 😅 I'm a nail polish fanatic. It's who I am.
My all time fave polish matte is a unicorn skin flake topcoat over natural nails. It’s absolutely stunning Edit: oh! And AU on natural nails matte is also stunning!

Mattifying magnetic polishes is really cool too! It turns the polish velvety and it looks just gorgeous. You should try it sometime!
Rubbing alcohol on a cotton pad or q-tip is a good way to remove oils from a matte top coat. 🌈

I find humidity is the wild card. I also use quick dry topcoat and then matte on top of it for a "beach glass" look. The manicure was still a disaster. So much repainting! Just a touch of humidity makes it tough to get great results.
Also, I forgot to mention. I'd love to see another linear/scattered holo comparison video like the one you did for the red and silver linears! Or any other comparison videos in general. Also, I'm really missing your makeup 101 videos as well! I love the almost yearly makeup videos haha. I feel like you've taught me so much about nail polish in general. Each nail polish 101 video has something new to offer even if you already know about them! You explain about each topic in an orderly and detailed way! Whenever I have a issue with a particular product or technique, I immediately see if there is a polisj 101 video for it haha. My favorite one is your how to remove glitter polish video, that was a life saver since I love wearing glitter polishes!
Have you ever tried Atomic Polish? They have a pastel neon collection that looks gorgeous… in case you do another video about neons. Anyway I love your videos, thanks for making them!

As a counter to thus video, sometimes a glossy topcoat on a matte polish brings so much out of the polish. Zoya has had some matte collections over the years, my fav being Verushka (emerald green) and Aspen (snow white). On each of them, a glossy topcoat brought out a really, really subtle shimmer that was just beautiful. I don't particularly like flakies, but I love them matte. So many combos!

Matte top coat is under-appreciated, its my duty to share as much as possible to make people realize how incredible it is, haha!!
for more matte top coat options, i definitely recommend trying it over nail art, especially detailed nail art or nail art that depicts actual words/pictures/characters. the matte finish takes away the eflectiveness of any light sources that are causing glare on the nail art so you can see all the details better.
also if anyone else wants to experiment with combining matte and glossy top coats in 1 nail, i definitely recommend trying out simplynailogical's multichrome rain drop and branching out from beyond raindrops- there's so many ways to combine both to look super cool.

Yes!!! I definitely needed this, U have a few matte colors but knowing what my shimmery polishes look like Mayte truly expanded my horizon. I’ll look into getting one because the swatches looked so different from their normal versions, almost refreshing

I discovered my love for matte nails on accident. I always thought it looked cool on other people but thought it wasn't for me. Then one day I wore nail polish to work (I work in a factory with sanding machines and such) and I accidentally sanded down my manicure on one nail so it became matte and I was like "ooh... I kinda like that"😂
Perfect timing! I just ordered a load of new A England shades and decided I wanted to try a matte top coat, so I ordered theirs. Can't wait to experiment with it!
I'm really loving that A England matte, it's so smooth and easy to work with!! (some brands are just a bit gummy and thick haha!)

Oh my gosh matte multi chromes are so fun!! You should totally try the Raindrop mani! You add matte top coat to your multichrome nails, then add glossy top coat on top of the matte using a dotting tool! It looks like little raindrops and it's so cute!

i love what you ended up pulling out for this experiment. it was really fun to see such a wide range of polishes outside of collection swatches. also thank you for doing all the work, especially with the multichromes and reflectives. i’m curious how a solar polish would change with matte top coat and if it would get less sensitive to UV. since i’m currently wearing a solar, and have at least two unopened bottles of matte top coat, i may have to try that experiment next.

I do swatch sticks of all my polishes. The sticks i have have 3 nails on one stick. So i do one straight from bottle, one over black and one with matte top coat. So i know what every one looks like with the other 2 options.
I picked up the sneakers Sinful Colors top coat and it is a matte, but not full on. I recently bought an OPI's matte and tested it on my polish while you were doing your's and I loved it! It makes shimmers turn into glowing polishes, like my PPU's Sassy Cat's Cotton Candy with a matte. It was so pretty!

I do want to throw my vote in for a Short mattifying that 'all-time favorite' of yours: Pineapples Have Peelings Too! (just for laughs) And, if you think it'd fit in the time of a Short, maybe you could do one with the magnetics since so many folks have mentioned it & gotten you curious about it. The aura effect you prefer sounds like it'd really lend itself well to the velvet look mattes often yield.
On a separate issue: do you recall approximately how many polishes a Helmer holds? I realize (1) it will vary from brand to brand, so maybe just an average; and (2) this is probably stated somewhere in the vast library of Kelli videos, but it hopefully won't be too much of a pain to just ask anew. 🙃 Thanks for all you give to us, Kelli!! When you said velvety feel. That's exactly how I think of matte. It feels velvety. I like to use matte for a tone on tone look. Do matte and then matte and little drops of glossy or draw squiggle lines with glossy. It's a cool and easy way to do nail art. I hate to lose my sparkles though but with creme and shimmers are grat with matte. I love this video. I like the longer video. But you probably know that already. 😅 I'm a nail polish fanatic. It's who I am.
My all time fave polish matte is a unicorn skin flake topcoat over natural nails. It’s absolutely stunning
