    THANK YOU!
    Ticks are getting worse and worse here in New England. It's time to fight back! Too many people I know have succumb to Lyme Disease. In this video I show you some DIY magic to make your own tick tubes. Rodents are a reservoir species for Lyme and are a big part of how Lyme transfer from one tick to the next. These tick tubes work by disrupting this cycle. Mice take the cotton balls back to their nests, where tick accumulate and breed, and the permethrin kills the ticks without harming the rodents.
    Here is the directions I'm more-or-less following:

    Because he's a) making these outdoors and b) applying the insecticide to the cotton balls he's avoiding any exposure to his indoor pets and avoiding any damage to non-target insects such as honeybees. This is probably the most effective and environmentally friendly way to have a significant impact on your local tick population.

      Yeah, Lyme is such a horrible thing. And ticks can carry worse pathogens! :O I am trying a lot of things to combat ticks. I'm spraying my lawn with garlic oils, and have building a few prototype traps to see if I can find cheap and simple ways to attract and capture / kill them. More videos to come on the topic! :)

      That's horrible. I live in the mountains of Pennsylvania, and ticks are really bad this year. It's the worse that I have ever seen it. I had 7 ticks crawling on my dog, and some attached. Also found ticks in my house that fell off the dogs. I have 2 German Shepherds, and bought them seresto collars and they are not working. I don't want to spray poisons, but I don't know what else to do. My spouse is diabetic, and what you said scares me.

    So how's it going with the tick control? Just so you know, 3.6 ounces of 36.8% permethrin to 16 ounces of water will give you 7.4% strength solution which is what the official tick tubes use. Personally I tend to pour it on the cotton, too much gets aerosolized with a sprayer, if you're doing it outside its gonna be very wasteful and possibly fly back on you. Also make sure you're using something like a 3M half face respirator, you don't wanna be inhaling the fumes when you're doing this, as well as eye protection. Once it dries its safe around animals. The .51% mix is what you should use if you're spraying your clothing, hats, hiking gear, tents, etc., that's the same percentage the military uses on all the soldier's uniforms, its good for like 6 weeks and will even last through 4-6 laundry washings, just don't wash it with other regular clothes. To get the .51% mix its 2oz of permethrin to 1 gallon of water.

    Permethrin is bad for bees, fish, birds, and cats but this distribution method probably wouldn't effect any of them unless the mouse gets caught. Permethrin degrades with time so it is not permanent pollution. This will not be my anti-tick method but it is an interesting idea. There is another youtube video of a deer-feeder that gets pesticide on the deer. Treating wild animals gives me bad vibes though. It is easy to imagine bad effects on the ecosystem.

    I sprayed my boots with this stuff and didn't think that I could step into water that could drain into our local lake. Do you know if there is a way to deactivate this stuff or get if off boots as it doesn't wash off easily with water?

    • @punkyroo
      @punkyroo  5 років тому +1

      I'm not familiar with anyway to deactivate it. It breaks down naturally in the environment, especially when exposed to direct sunlight. You can try washing it off with soap and water and leaving the boots outside in the sunlight. I'd recommend spraying your clothes with something less toxic like products that contain DEET. I use OFF spray on my boots and clothes when I am outside to keep ticks away.

    hey thanks for the vid, i am a lyme D survivor who life was wrecked by a tick, little bastards,anyway I am in a war with little pricks on my property which i used to enjoy immensely but now so conscientious about ticks that i rarely venture to the woods any more. i ordered the permethrin before reading about the cat toxicity .since we have like a heard of cats thanks to my daughter, i am now a little worried about how toxic the product is.will they be poisoned if they catch an exposed mouse or play with an actual trap? we have been keeping them inside due to the tick explosion, so i am hoping after a season of treatment that they may be able to roam the outdoors again without coming in wearing the little bastard things like they have prior. the other prob is a couple feral cats that usually stay on there side of the road but sometime do wonder over, do you know a site that i can get the actual toxicity scoop? thanks a gain

      According to vets and the bottle, it is only lethal until it is dry. Once dry, cats can be around dogs treated with it as well as clothing.

      If you are very nervous, you can send the tick to a lab for bb-testing. I prefer putting a good antibiotic cream on the bite. Kills borrelia even after 24 hours (covered with a good plaster).

    So happy to see you making this effort! I hate them too. I treat my dogs and clothes with permethrin and am looking into what other measures to take. The neighbors have cats, so Ive been reluctant to set up tubes. I've been thinking to organize community "tick walks" where we go tick dragging in the woods. I'm getting ready for deer hunting season too, planning to kill all the ticks from the deer we get. Other than that, not really sure what to do! I'm in rural nh and we can't even walk on the paved road without the dogs getting ticks!

    • @punkyroo
      @punkyroo  7 років тому +2

      Yeah, here in New England there is clearly a tick epidemic. I think "tick walks" sounds like an awesome plan. I actually tried that around my yard but did catch a single one!! My plan was to have several lengths of fabric, so once one was loaded with ticks I could put it in a sealed bag. And when done, all the fabric would go into the dryer on high heat for 30 minutes. I contacted a local exterminator and they wanted to charge me BIG BUCKS to spray cedar oil and spread diatomaceous earth around the edges of the lawn. So, I just ordered the cedar oil and DE for a fraction the cost and will apply it myself.

    The Permethrin (36.9%) to Water ratio is 80 to 1 !!! so you are def using to much. For that sprayer which looks to be one liter you only need a tablespoon. That bottle of permethrin makes 20 gallons of solution! B Careful, if you have the time to make this video you definitely have time to search concentrations

    • @punkyroo
      @punkyroo  7 років тому

      Good tip! In the tutorials I was looking at for anti-tick not specific concentration was given. I will water it down a bit when I do my next set of tubes.

    • @stefonte
      @stefonte 7 років тому +3

      Update: The proper ratio for Tick Tubes is 5 parts water to one part poison. That's to get a 7% Permethin like in the commercial tubes from the 36% concentrated bottle. For direct lawn treatment its 0.5% which is the 80 to 1. The comments in this link are helpful but there is another site that give a calculator, when I find it I will share. www.domyownpestcontrol.com/permethrin-sfr-368-questions-pq-445.html

    • @punkyroo

      *nods* I've never owned guineas and are debating getting some. I've heard they can be pretty rough on one's chickens and have a tendency to wander off and not return. So I'm thinking if I try guineas I may keep a mated pair in their own coop / closed run and then hatch out a lot of chicks that will be released onto my property as tick collectors (so if they are eaten or wander off, it will not be a huge loss).
