All About Ashikaga - Finding Lily Chou Chou | Filming Locations

- I went to Ashikaga (足利), the place where "All About Lily Chou Chou (リリイ・シュシュのすべて)" was filmed 22 years ago. The film, directed by Shunji Iwai, is one of the most unique films I've ever seen, and the fact that it was made 22 years ago still blows my mind. Ashikaga is located north-west of Tokyo and it is about a 2.5 hour train ride from Tokyo.
I stayed at a hotel in Sano, a small town about 30 mins away from Ashikaga by train, before setting off for Ashikaga during the early hours of a Thursday. The train was all students. I was probably the only person not wearing a school uniform, and with the addition of a big DSLR camera slung around my chest, I did not feel invisible.
My time in Ashikaga feels like a vivid dream. I have not properly grasp that I was really there, it felt like I was watching a behind-the-scenes featurette that was incredibly clear. What I have now is a feeling of longing. It is safe to say that I will return to Ashikaga some time in the future.

I’m from Ashikaga. The first time I watched Lily Chou-Chou was when I was 14. Since then, I’m a huge fan of this movie as a citizen of this city and as a teenager. I used to be one of them who biked on the green bridge. Thank you for coming all the way down to this small city. Thank you for capturing the beauty of my hometown. I moved to Tokyo a few years ago. But I wish I could meet you when I was there.
That's so interesting, maybe I should let you know when I visit Ashikaga again! Btw, how was it watching the movie as a person from Ashikaga? Did you find it somewhat relatable?
@@LimYangJunn it doesn’t have to be Ashikaga but when you come back to japan, yes! Shunji Iwai portrayed well. Ashikaga is just a boring city like any other rural city. Especially for teenagers, it’s so boring cuz there are only a few places to hang out. But after I watched this movie, I could think this city isn’t as bad as I thought.
And yes, when I felt lonely I felt there’s no place to escape because it’s a small city so everyone is everywhere. The funny story is that the school they used is actually one of the most famous middle schools to have a lot of ‘yankees.’ The choice of school was correct lol
@suzuyokozuka3991 that's great! Cause I'm going to Japan again next year, how should I let you know? Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts, it's so interesting to know your point of view. I learned a new word in "yankee" too hahaha
@@LimYangJunn do you have Instagram?
Ooh just think they are bunch of bullies 😂
@suzuyokozuka3991 yes! it's @limyangjunn
This video is just perfect, the way you film, edit, or even the text are showing how much you truly adore lily chou chou. Thanks you for sharing this with us
Your words are too kind, thank you very much for watching!
I love this, it feels like Yuichi going to back to visit his hometown years after the events of the movie when hes a grown up.
I wasn't planning on revealing my true identity but...please don't tell anyone.
This is a very specific video i've wanted to see for YEARS
I'm glad to be delivering it to you :)
Just finished watching the movie, it took me around 4 hours, simply because some scenes were too overwhelming for me, the movie made me think, cry, reflect, and honestly when I was a young teen I was dissociated from everyone, and listening to music was the only time I felt free from the loneliness, I would go to this little spot by a riverbank where either outcasts or nobody else went to. so I can fully relate with the movie's message about music.
Some day, if I'll ever even travel to Japan in my life, Ashikaga is gonna be my first destination.
Thank you for making the video.
I can relate to having music as an escape from life, though I have yet to find a spot like your riverbank but I'll get to it haha. I did listen to "tobenai tsubasa" from the movie's soundtrack while at the radio tower, and it is definitely a memory that I may cherish.
Thank you for watching!

It's actually available free on youtube, there definitely isn't a hindi dub but there's probably a hindi sub somewhere on the internet
this video is oddly comforting. It’s brings me the feelings of familiarity of a place I have never been to. You’ve managed to capture the essence of the film and recreate the emotions it makes people feel. I hope to one day make a video just like this and hope i capture the ether the way you did.
Ah I'm glad you found this video to be comforting. Thank you so much. I believe someday you will capture the same feeling too.
I'm from this city,Ashikaga. Thanks to this video, I can remember my old days.
When I was in university, I watched this emotional movie , Lily.
Now I'm living foreign countries, however I love my hometown.
Oh wow, a local! Thank you so much. I just want to let you know that your hometown is an amazing place, I hope I captured it beautifully.
@@LimYangJunn
Your video is so beautiful that I can remind this nostalgic and amazing movie. In addition, I can proud of my hometown.
I don't really travel anywhere, but if there's ever a "bucket list" of places I want to see in this lifetime, this is definitely one of them.
I get that...the reason I went to Japan is mainly because of this place too.
This is amazing. I've been getting into Shunji Iwai's works and I've seen Love Letter, All About Lily Chou Chou, Hana and Alice, and A Bride for Rip Van Winkle so far. Lily Chou Chou really is a film that stays with you and is unique stylistically. Seeing the shooting locations IN PERSON must be surreal.
I'm glad you discovered Shunji Iwai's work! They really should be seen by more people. Yes, it was unbelievable...
Woah i watched this movie today and idk how to feel it is so aesthetic, meaningful, sad. Not to mention the songs…this movie is pure art
+ this video gave the vibes of the movie
I agree...I absolutely adore the album. Glad you enjoyed the movie.
It's 2AM, just finished the movie an came here. This made me cry again. You caught the essence, cinematography and colour grading really precisely. Surreal. A perfect tribute from a die-hard fan.
If I even get the chance to visit Japan (I don't think I ever will, I'm hopeless) I would obviously like to visit this Ashikage along with other places from my list.
I believe you will visit someday, friend. Thank you!
I wrote in notes 3 places I wanted to see. One of them is the rice field in "All about lily Chou-chou".
I want to get there before I die. :)
I'm sure you will get there eventually. Btw, I love your use of "No Surprises", it fits really well!
@@LimYangJunn Thanks 😁👍

I'm so happy that you and I share a similar experience! I don't know if I have seen your writing in the book but I remember there were a few entries written in Korean, one of them could be yours? Thank you for watching.
What a perfect tribute to the film
Thanks!

The power of cinema...
Finished watching this film yesterday. There’s something oddly comforting about it. Downloaded the soundtracks, they’re gonna be played in a continuous loop for sure.
This video makes me want to visit this this humble city. I love the remade shots. So wholesome ☺️
It is an amazing movie...glad you enjoyed it!
idk for some reason this brought tears to my eyes. This was beautifully shot. Thank you for sharing this experience w us. Can you tell, what camera did you use to film this?
I feel so lucky to have people like you watch this video :) I made it especially for you guys. Thank you! I used my 8 years old Canon 70D.
omg im not the korean but i also did this in april!! i studied abroad in tokyo for 4 months and waited til my last week to do this and it was one of the best parts of my time in japan. i also rented a bike and when i found the spot where he looked at the poster in the fields i felt like a little kid on christmas morning lol. wanted to stay there forever it was like a spiritual experience... didnt make it to the radio tower and left before the ramen shop opened but got to see mostly everything and so happy i did !!
For real??!! I kinda wanna see some pics hahaha. I'm glad we share the same experience!
@@LimYangJunn sorry for late reply, do u have instagram?
Today as left Yoyogi Park, I saw a UFO looking building in the distance and walked over to it. Next to it I saw a place I instantly recognized: the concert venue scene from Lily Chou Chou! Once I got home I looked it up to confirm: Yoyogi National Gymnasium! Then I came across your video and couldn’t believe it. Ashikaga?! I just went there a few weeks ago for the Wisteria Park! I stayed in Ashikaga for four days. I had no idea it was the filming location for Lily Chou Chou and I honestly didn’t recognize anything. The place almost felt like a ghost town to me. It was a strange, uncanny place. But for some reason I felt a connection to it. Now I know why. Amazing video! Thank you.
No way, I had a similar experience with the UFO looking building. I was visiting Tokyo for the 2nd time and encountered the building and thought that it looked familiar. I'm so glad you went to Ashikaga too, albeit to different places. Thank you for watching!
just beautiful
I'm glad you found it beautiful
Beautiful, I would love to go there and explore the area myself once i go to Japan again!
