- My 1991 Trans Am won't start. I went through a series of tests before I figured out the problem. Along the way, I also managed to blow the start (it was defective). This is a 305 TPI but these steps could apply to several different motors.

I had the same problem with my 89 Camaro IROC-Z. It was just the timing mechanical issue. Saved me a lot of money. This is what I love about the 3rd gen models of the Camaro/Trans-Am, they almost have the same problem and are easy to fix.
When your car started, I felt that brother. Good work. 👍
Thanks!
It's the fuel pump. When you turn the key on the fuel pressure should be 42psig right away, then drop back to 38psig. You now need a new starter from turning it over so many times.
i am experiencing the same problem right now with my 85 corvette with tpi. got new fuel pump with sending unit, new fuel pressure regulator, checked for spark, cant be compression issue because i drove the car and then sat for a week. went through the same route except haven't checked my distributor yet. i did notice the distributor I'll loser than usual and could moved from some bumps. keep thinking there's an ignition related issue. when it starts, it idles like crap and then one tap of the gas pedal and it will fall flat on its face.
Going thru exact issue w my 89 305 tpi formula firebird. Replaced:
Fuel pump relay
Fuel pump fuse
Dist cap and rotor
Ignition module
Fuel pressure regulator
Still no start. Tho my fuel pump primes I wonder if pump is bad
Same on my 86 swapped a mild built 350 from a 89 gta drove it 8 mins it kept trying to die at stop lights had to put it in neutral and keep rpm up so it wouldn’t stall new fuel pump. It’s getting spark injectors are good. tried starting with starter fluid just just keeps dying out
Nice man he’ll yeah!
nothing feels so good then having your car start after working on her for a week, the cap probably got loose causing it to turn.
@Abdullah Aiden i hope he deletes this comment, its so wrong for you people do to this to this guys video, he work so hard to make
@Beckett Charlie i hope he deletes this comment, its so wrong for you people do to this to this guys video, he work so hard to make
I own a 86 GTA 350 four barrel runs warm an electrical fan issue , I drove it hone right before winter an figured spring fix it won’t start , no starting fluid will start it ! I had spark now time to check the distributor thanks hopefully this is it !
Good luck!
I thought 1987 was the first year for the GTA?
Throttle position sensor?
So to recap did you buy a new distributor? And so that was ur issue?
Cause I noticed my dist cap can be spun clockwise or counter by hand. I think its suppose to be bolted secure. And my rotor was also pointed facing foward like urs. But the notch fits the rotar in that position. My car is still not starting after an amazing day of driving. I turned off car then upon restarting it- it jumped around and finally only cranks but no starting. Is it possible the distributor could have went off timing while driving due to the road or engine vibrating/turning the cap and base timing off?
Nope i didn't need a new distributor. My rotor just had to be clicked into place. I think if your distributor went out of timing, there may be some internal damage. Have you taken your timing?
@@OverheatedGarage at this point I towed to engine shop. I started of thinking no fuel delivery. Cause I got spark. But u had spark too. And it wasn't fuel related. Hope tomm to get answers from mechanic
@@OverheatedGarage following up to help anyone. After everything- mechanic found crazy amount of water in gas tank, lines, injectors upon getting BAD PREMIUM GAS at a local CITCO! Had to drop the exhaust to drop my gas tank, blow out entire fuel system, lines, tank, injectors and more. New oil change. Expensive and timely repairs. So pissed🙄
@@theoutlaw9043 whoa that sucks! Sorry that happened but glad you figured it out!
@@OverheatedGarage thx bro. Found out today the citgo turned in to michigan agricultural. Mult complaints. I just dropped off my $700 costs of repairs for them to compensate. Lol
The one you zip-tied is the cruise control cable, not the “throttle” cable.
Wrong
Can some one provide the part number and solution to the zipp tied throttle cable i have the same problem on a 92 camaro 3.1L
I don't have a part number but I used a random metal retainer ring. They have them at Ace Hardware. They're super cheap so you can grab a few different sizes and try.
Dorman Linkage Retainer Clips Part number 41017
I got service engine soon flash for couple days than park the car over night , cranks in the morning but no start at all , can any list what might the couse is ?
91 bird TPI 305
The general rule is if you have spark, fuel, air, and compression the motor should start. If the check engine light came on it could be a sensor. See if any codes are being thrown. Might be something like a mass air flow sensor.
@@OverheatedGarage getting 12 code each time ... Nothing
Oh yeah + one of my friends test the plugs sparks as you did , No sparks in there..
@@FaisalAhmed-kf9yf Nice work! The easiest next step is to check the cap & rotor on your distributor. If it wears away enough, you won't get a spark. It's also possible there's some kind of damage to the distributor.
@@OverheatedGarage WALLA, it was the distributor black sending unite attched to it , there were 2 wires and one of the was in bad shape , got full new one and it starts right the way , but I still have service engine soon light on , not blinking .
Fuel pressure gauges dont go back down. Theirs a check valve in them. Thats why theirs a release button on the gauge lol
A MI ME PASO LO MISMO con mi PONTIAC 89 DE REPENTE SE ME APAGO I YA NO QUISO PRENDER LO TUVE QUE LLEVAR A CASA EN GRUA LOS MECÁNICOS NO LE PODIAN ENCONTRAR LA FALLA I ASI DURO MESES ASTA QUE UNA MAÑANA DESIDI COMPRAR EL ROTOR I PONÉRSELO I PRENDIÓ EN AQUELLOS AÑOS EL ROTOR COSTABA 1DOLAR UN CORDIAL SALUDO DESDE TIJUNA
I have an issue with the same car same engine. When cold runs fine when warms up only runs on 7 or 6 sylinders.
Thats weird. You checked the compression? Any vacuum leaks?
@@OverheatedGarage compression is fine but im gonna start checking for leaks when i have spare time
@@attetaateli3483 All 8 cylinders fire when its cold?
@@OverheatedGarage yes
Well what caused the rotor to face the other direction?
No idea other than I was driving it at high RPMs the day it happened. It must have knocked loose.
@@OverheatedGarage well how did you know it was facing wrong just by looking at it ? Because the rotor can stop and turn in any direction. Just curious.
@@jl456 oh! Because at top dead center it should have been pointing to cylinder 1 (which is the front right cylinder when you're looking at it.) It was pointing directly to the driver side when it knocked loose and I knew it looked funky.
@@OverheatedGarage oh okay thanks I'm trying to figure out my 91 Z right now it cranks over but doesn't start, only on starting fluid it will start up
@@jl456 you checked the fuel pressure? Fuel pump? Check your fuses too.
This is why you need a service manual
Mi camaro del 97 LT1, no enciende y no e podido solucionar el problema😔
Weird, you spun a rotor.
Change injectors I fix my car
Bravo Arturo!! Was wondering why no one had mentioned injectors yet. They are horrible for shorting out and cause no starts in GM multi port engines of that era. We use to change lots of these back in the day at our shop. By the way, these early modules won't throw codes for injectors either. Fun to diagnose.
Tpi dont have injectors
NIce video but that is a Trans Am, much better than a firebird. Hurts my ears when you call it a firebird.
They're all fireturds
