  • While making a small battery might be kinder to the environment, having to charge up more often is a pain. Bob finds out if the new Mazda MX30 can hack the motorway and B-roads of Ireland.

    I have test it myself couple weeks ago and it has such a great build quality. Amazing to drive and superb entertainment system. In mix motorway and town it's pretty easy to get 120 miles. In town I would be able to get 140.

      I bought a 40 kWh Leaf, when I first bought it my wife was really concerned about the range and thought the car was a big mistake. Now she is fine with it, after a while you understand how much more charge you need most times a 10 to 15 minute charge at DC fast charger is all I need to complete a 300 km day, for a 400 km day I might add another 15 minute fast charge.

    • @ThePinkus

      The Mazda seller actually emphasized that to me when I was buying it. It was me that was reassuring him that I wouldn't need more range than this cars has, but he was convinced only when I told him I could always take my uncle's car if I really needed to do longer trips.
      I do 60 km/day commuting and it fits me perfectly. Essentially I charge at home overnight programming it to charge during the low-cost hours, and a 90% charge gives me 2 days of autonomy and then something. Which means I am always ready to go in the morning, importantly, even if for any reason it missed the charge during the night, and then charge immediately when I get back (without waiting for the low cost hours).

    Great review, as always, in your own inimitable way. The MX30 has all the engineering finesse and possibly reliability that Mazda puts in its vehicles. With regards to their choice of battery size and therefore range, it all depends on its use, here in Malta where distances are minute the car actually fits the bill.

    Really well described. I do love my MX30 after 2 years of ownership. It's my personal spa on the road... I'm getting very good results in range (considering the "pocket" battery): 11.8 kWh/100km as global average. It means more than 260 km in summer, 230 in winter (in Italy). Daily commute is around 45 km and i charge each three days, at home, while sleeping. It's the 3rd car in family. If it fits with your needs, it's a lovely, super comfortable and unique car, but however, probably not the right BEV for the masses...

The car is very impressive for my requirements, mostly only me in it and free charger at my workplace, with a round trip commute of 52 miles. It’s the build quality and quirkiness which I like which is supported by excellent customer service. 👍

    Would agree with you on the short range being an owner of a 28kWh Ioniq. Short range batteries are brilliant for local trips and max 200km journeys where you depend only on home charging. This has worked very well for me so far but obviously if I did a 100km+ trip on concurrent days I would be charging every day. In current working environment not an issue.
    I think also with short range cars for long trips, even though rare, it puts that small doubt in your mind that a charger could be occupied when you arrive. Hopefully public infrastructure will vastly improve over next couple years. Haven’t been stuck yet.

    I picked up my MX30 in early March, and I use it to commute between Drogheda and Dublin everyday for work and its a great car, I have really enjoyed driving up and down and it is a great commuter car.
    This is my first EV and it was between a Tesla Model 3 standard 50KW for €50k and the Mazda MX30 first edition for €32k, so price was the biggest push to the Mazda even though Tesla had a better range I weighed up what I actually needed from my car and I didn't think and extra 14.5KWH was worth the extra €18k when I didn't need it. I also preferred the hight and look of the Mazda over the Tesla, I would probably say the Mazda looks and drives like a nippy car where the Tesla felt like more like a showing off your wallet size brand over. I think there is something about keeping a car familiar over been entirely reliant on the centre screen makes me feel happy I like tactile buttons.
    since picked up my Mazda I have driven from Drogheda to Galway city, Newry, Belfast and Dublin (Dublin being my daily commute) usually when I am taking off on a longer journey I will have the car at 100% and usually I would charge on the return journey, if I use a 50KW CCS charger I will get from 10% to 80% in 30 to 40 min depending how worm those batteries are or how buzzy that charger has been ran that day. I currently only start looking for a charger when the battery is at 20% and it is odd but the battery dose charge quicker the lower the battery is I would never bother wasting my time charging until its under 30% unless I am at home.
    I actually kept a more detail track of a few of my longer journeys in this Mazda MX-30 form post:
    www.mx30forum.com/threads/my-experience-with-the-mx-30-range-while-driving-around-ireland.247/#post-1417
    This is my only car and my main daily and it is a great car I 100% recommend saving your money and pick up one of these, also Ireland from the furthest North to the furthest south is only 486 km and East to West is 275 km I see no bloody point in dishing out tone of money out on these long range cars that cost more to charge fully per-Kwh and can take longer to charge fully because there are still very few CCS charger in Ireland that run past 50Kwh and some are limited to 35Kwh.

    I like the look of both the MX30 and Honda E but I think if they had just a little bigger battery they would be better. I get the argument, smaller lighter battery = better dynamics and more efficient (though you then have to explain where that efficiency is hiding on both of them. I have only a 30kWh battery in my Kia Soul but it can trounce both of these on range), but I think the sweet spot is low to mid 40kWh. The fact is that until we get better and reliable infrastructure, range anxiety is a thing when you have less than 150 miles of range. Having a slightly larger battery also allows you to treat it better. You can keep it in the 20 to 80% range and have enough miles to do the odd longer journey. I think I'm a fairly typical driver, I commute an 11 mile round trip to work each day and then at weekends might do anything from 50 miles to 200 miles to go sightseeing. It would be nice to do the longer trips with only a couple of hours on a destination charger in a car park. Great review, I'll look out for more.

    In addition to Bobs comment on more time spent on chargers, I am asking myself if a smaller battery will degrade faster as it will need more charge cycles.

    • @cros13
      @cros13 3 роки тому +3

      Yes, for any given mileage it would. Though the difference is not noticeable until very high mileages. I put 200,000km on a 22kWh pack, capacity loss was 10.5%. This pack is actually about 80% larger (usable vs headline capacity accounts for the difference) and would face 80% fewer cycles for the same mileage. But a 70kWh-class battery would face half the charge cycles again....

    • @anderspersson6134
      @anderspersson6134 3 роки тому

      Thats a relevant question. According to statistics from Geotab high usage is NOT a problem. Some even argue that high usage is good for the battery. Promoters of degradation are:
      Time
      Heat
      Rapid Charging
      Really low and really high state of charge
      So put your EV to work. Sitting around doing nothing is not its purpose in life.

    That front seat folds forward to let you in the back surly ? Glasgow to Duxford via York 408 miles and total charge over two stops 28 minutes one 20 minutes and one 8 minutes. Both stops one for lunch and one for a pee stop also so why not charge. You just don’t have to worry about charging or time lost as you simply don’t loose any time as you’d need to stop anyway for 98% of normal people. Tesla is just different gravy, but others are getting there and the new charge highway being rolled out means next year you’d have probably no worry on say other brands. Fast charging is key when you need it, 80% your charge at home for next to nothing or free at shopping centres. People have just got used and a bit blind to handing over £40 a week to Mr Shell , BP to top up as it just necessary. Friends done 12,000 miles in a new Golf E (not the ID range) and it’s cost him £18 going back and forth to his work. £18😂

    I had this car for a day when they first arrived and loved it. Loved the tone too, gave the car more soul compared to other electrics. Talking of Soul , it's range was no better than my sons Soul 30kWh and that was never quite enough. The promised petrol generator version is due soon but I believe the battery size is half that of the full ev version. What a downer, now a car that would do 100 miles then would do the big trips on petrol, that's the car for me. Charge at home every night then every longer trip burn some petrol. No need to visit a broken charger network.

      The Mazda MX-30 R-EV will have a 17.5kWh battery which will give about 50+ miles per charge - still enough for the average daily commute - but you’ll definitely need to charge it everyday. The Rotary Extender Engine will supply electricity to the battery only, either holding what charge it has or charging it up to full if it has run flat, while allowing the battery to simultaneously supply power to the electric traction motors turning the wheels.
      At no time will the rotary extender engine turn the wheels directly - its strictly an electrical generator - allowing the MX-30 R-EV to do about 400 miles range on a full tank. The Extender Rotary Engine is 0.8 Litre capacity - but I believe it’s a Euro 6 rated power plant.

  • @martino9134

    Bob I think Mazda have a MX30-REX planned (range extender ,like the old BMWi3) version with a mini rotary engine acting as a generator to supplement its range. It could be quite a useful alternative to the 'massive battery ' route when you only need that longer trip capability once or twice a month

    Thanks for your great review, which is absolutely true.
    To confirm your review, I share my experience driving a MX30 since November 2020, MX30 is absolutely a very gorgeous car, inside-out with outstanding finishing quality and very comfortable and pleasant to drive. BUT WHAT A SHAME!!! Technically as an EV, MX30 is useless! When the temperature drops to freezing point or even near, driving range on the highway drops to 110KM (140KM off highway) and worst is the charging time, it takes over 3 hours (in cold weather) to recharge the battery on a CCS 50KW/h charging station and not 45 minutes as announced by Mazda! You need to stop 3 hours at a fast charging station to be able to drive less than one hour!

      If going on a longer trip I leave home at 100% charge but any subsequent charges will be limited to 75 to 80% and charge time is between 20 and 30 minutes. This is with a 40 kWh Leaf but charge time estimates would be about the same as your car if going to 100% charge. Everybody’s experience and expectations are different but I found by not charging too high it is more time efficient. On Friday I went 300 km with a 12 minute fast charge when the charge dropped below 30%, came home with a 19% charge left in the car.

It does seem niche but if you lived in town,wanted a second car for school runs, shopping etc and had a charger at home then this would be fine. OK we like to think we need a car that can do 200 miles - just in case - but as a second car this has a lot going for it. Maybe when electric becomes compulsory and all manufacturers are forced to adjust their pricing down to something realistic then we’ll see more of these and people may see the use case.

    Aye that sort of car really as you no doubt keenly observed yourself is really only for city travelling, I do 75 miles a day so I'd be charging that every day if it was mine. Regarding the colours of cars, my diesel Kadjar is red so none of that silver or other colours like that for me. I did have a gun metal grey diesel Megane Coupe before that and it was nice in that colour. Ideally speaking if I were ever to consider an EV it'd need to be lower than £20k in price, do a minimum of 300 miles on a charge and be practical and nice to look at. None of that in my eyes exists yet. I'll be sticking with diesel for a long time to come and even into my next car. As you know I live in the North and if the infrastructure was better/charging times were shorter I could live with less range for an EV but we're still not there yet plus irrespective of how cheap EVs are to run like you also observed it's the initial cost is far too much therefore the break even point is longer than it should be.

Contains chemicals that will mean its expensive to dispose of. For new owners not an issue but may mean 2nd hand buyers will stay clear. Mazda use lithium I think. We could see EV devaluing rapidly in second hand market in future as dealers may not take some cars back after certain period due to recycling cost. Ni-cad longer life than lithium but much more expensive to dispose of. Problem of the future eh...

Esb are looking to invest in large solar farms in Ireland and these are going to be interesting as how they will work as they are looking to develop one on my farm. I look forward to it, however I am keeping my desial for now. Getting 42.7mpg in cities and over 60mpg on motorway. 2 minutes fill up and off I go.

    It's a second car, work and back, kids to school and a bit of running around. But how many people have £25k+ to spend on a second car with such limitations? Also, suicide doors imo aren't safe in an accident. The name says it all..

      Actually the MX 30 has scored really well in safety tests including side collision. Best in its class. The rear door is quite heavy. It is true that the weight of the car has increased because of the heavy reversed doors. Not dangerous but heavy.

    I could live with the small battery if Mazda had made the same choice as Hyundai, an 800v system and within 10 min a full charge. Mazda states 50 kW as max. fast charging and I see 22 kW that is not going to work.

    Bike lanes on that road would be a waste of time as they would be dangerous. The pavements were empty so why not say people can use these?

    Public chargers less than 50kW are a waste of time and will prevent EV adoption scaling to any meaningful level in the mid to long term. Chargers need to compete with "fill your tank" time and be plentiful enough so that transitioning from ICE has minimal friction.

    Mazda MX30 has too short a range to be useful for anything over than a city car, which is too large to be suited, the rear suicide doors are a off putting design, and that car ain't cheap. The front doors will end up damaging others in supermarkets, If I ever see one (MX30) I'll park anywhere but next to it.

    wouldn't it be more efficient for low mileage people to hold onto their little petrol cars and then buy teslas in 10-15 years with their degraded batteries?
    rather than making cars now that only do 120 miles from factory and will be utterly useless when the battery degrades

    • @cros13
      @cros13 3 роки тому

      No.... because the emissions from those vehicles over 10-15 years of use are substantially higher than the production emissions of a new EV (+grid emissions in use) in any situation above ~6-7000km per year mileage. In 10-15 years the battery in this Mazda would still more than likely have 70-80% of it's rated range.

    A small battery will wear out much faster due to more frequent cycling. So what is the advantage as the Mazda EV is not cheaper?

    • @davidmccarthy6061
      @davidmccarthy6061 3 роки тому

      No, that won't happen and the engineers have designed for this. If you still don't agree please provide your data to prove your assumption.

      @@davidmccarthy6061 Do Mazda engineers have any special lithium ion battery tech?
      No, they are way behind other makers as a company. They would have just bought the batteries and developed a battery management system out their butts.
      LI batteries have limited cycles, a small battery would be recharged more often and the cycles would be deeper.
      Mazda cannot escape that fact with any special design especially since they have no special skills in this area, in fact the opposite.

    You're premise is misleading. Who jumps in their petro car and says how far can I go today? People don't drive that way. You fuel it up and try to do what you have to do each day (chores, work) and you refill it when u have to. This whole idea that you must have a weeks worth of range for TODAY is not an idea that relates to all EVs. That's not how we use or think about our phones right?

    I must say the seat leon Plug in is great. 60km range on electric and then you switch over to petrol and that gives you 450km. 90% of my trips I am on full electric. Best of both. I would go full electric if a car has a 600km range but any less and I am just not interested.

    To anyone who hasn't owned an older model Leaf, or Zoe, the battery size and range of the Mazda will drive you nuts. Unless it is purely a 2nd car and you never, ever intend to drive outside of a city I would avoid anything with that small of a range, because genuinely you will hate the thing. On the cork interior, that's an awful idea - can you imagine in two to three years how grubby that's going to be. Finally Bob I love your comments, "put in a row of 22kwh chargers at the petrol station".......later in the video, "oh that's a slow charger at a train station, that's no good...." As most cars can only get about 7kw per hour out of those 22kwh chargers (with the obvious exception of a Zoe) you'd need to be stuck at one for hours to get any sort of charge.
