  • In this short video, Johannes from Victron Energy answers a couple of questions that we collected from different platforms (Victron Community, email, social media, etc).
    Subjects in this episode:
What are the advantages/disadvantages of using either the VE.direct or VE.Can communication?
Why do you guys have the BMS outside the battery?
I wonder if you could explain the connections to "Ground" in a mobile application.
How does actually a Cyrix Battery Combiner Actually work?
Why does a Multiplus II 3000/24v need a 5kw generator to charge the batteries?

I have some questions about the Victron 10kva Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS). I see that there is an ability to connect the ATS to other Victron devices. What is the benefit of making that connection, and what does one use for cabling? We had the ATS professionally installed today and it's working very well!

According to the datasheet for the Victron Peak Power Battery with a capacity of 20Ah, it specifies a continuous output current of 30A from Output 2 and a nominal voltage of 12.8V. However, if the logic board consumes 12.8V at 14.7A, it is unclear if the battery will supply more current than the specified 14.7A to the logic board.! any tip is appreciated

    Thanks Johannes,
I have a question for your next video:
I'm building the electrical system for my campervan using the Victron product line.
I have a Multiplus 3000, SmartShunt, Cerbo GX, Buck Boost, Lynx distributor and two 12V 200Ah Smart Lithium batteries connected in parallel.
Additionally, I also have a spare 12V 100Ah Smart Lithium battery I would like to be able to use.
Due to the different capacities, it's not recommended to simply add this battery in parallel to the others, but is there another way/product that would allow me to add it to the system so I effectively have 500Ah available?

    Questions for Victron:

    2) Am I correct that 2 of your future 24v MultiPlus-II 2x 120/240VAC working together can pass through split phase and each can use available 120VACx50A on each phase of shore power to charge the batteries (doubling the charge current when compared with only one multiplus) and produce split phase 240VAC off batteries when disconnected from shore power? This is about low voltage protect
I've just purchased 4 Victron 100ah super cycle batteries and a Victron 220ah battery protect, I am very confused about the low voltage disconnect.
in previous videos I saw that the low voltage disconnect is set to disconnect when the voltage reaches 11.8, everywhere I've read says that a 12v battery is 50% discharged when is gets to 12.2, so why is the battery disconnect set to a much lower value, please explain why the disconnect is set to lower than that 50% value.
My assumption is that the disconnect low voltage is the voltage while under load and when the load is shut off then the battery voltage will rise to it's no load value, please please explain, I'm afraid I will destroy my new batteries that I paid a lot of money for.

    • @johannesboonstra6917

Good question ! I will explain more in the next episode (after the one which is already recorded), the major point is that a battery will "recover" its voltage after being discharged. So if you would draw 25A from you battery the voltage would drop to lets say 11,5V after a certain time, indicating to you the battery is extremely empty. When you then stop discharging you will see that the voltage will go up again and land somewhere at 12,4Vdc, If you would this with a 2A discharge the battery will not recover and the battery is actually therefore much further discharged. So with a big current after all the battery wasn't that empty, at a low discharge the battery is extremely empty. A battery protect is therefore allowing the battery to discharge with a high current. If your discharge is low (compared to the capacity of the battery, the cur of voltage needs to be set higher)

In case of a device issue (but only one) in no current can leak to earth, which protects the user. I noticed that rcd is also not working when the van is connected to mains (230v). Hi, Thanks for your valuable information.
I'm setting up a 48v battery system in a trailer building that will I use for catering remote bus tours in Australia. The fridge I'm building is 300l, I'm using an Ozfridge eutectic system. My issue is that the fridge has an eco setting, what this does is it senses the voltage and when the voltage rises above 13.5v the electronics tell the compressor to run until it reaches the end of the cooling cycle. The theory behind this is that when there is excess power. (the batteries are neary fully charged) the fridge runs and stores energy in it's eutectic tank while there is excess solar instead of using the power from the batteries when there is no solar.
My question is does the output voltage from your Tr 48-12 DC to DC converter vary as the input input voltage rises as the battery levels come up while charging. If this was the case I though I could set the voltage on the converter at a point that it raises to the 13.5v when the batteries are at a certain voltage in the charge cycle. Will this work?
    Thanks Robert

Does that work to? Can the BYD LVS be connected to the solaredge inverter and the three Multiplus II at the same time so that the Multiplus will only discharge in case off grid failure or du i need a second batterie (or connect the battery only to Multiplus)? I've got it hooked up to a fairly old 51A alternator and in good conditions it can pull 25A which feels like a little more than the alternator is really made for given that the car itself is pulling a fair share as well.
    2. If not, will hooking up a remote switch and only have it switch on during high RPMs for short periods to avoid overheating work? Or does it still pull power when off and only the output is disabled?

Maybe this is something you could cover in a video or maybe with an answer here, I asked a question already and I just discovered something I never mentioned in my earlier comment
I just found out that you can't use a battery protect with an inverter, I have 4 100ah Victron super cycle batteries, a 220 Victron amp battery protect and a Victron 2000va inverter, do I just wire the inverter directly to the batteries and the battery protect after the inverter so the inverters power is not measured through the battery protect? is there anyway to show me a diagram?
for context, I also have 12v direct loads, couple of water pumps and a UV light, is it safe to use the battery protect after the inverter has already had a supply from a bus bar and the direct loads on another post of the bus bar? so the battery protect will not have it's power supply controlled by the battery protect.

There is hardly a point in having the Battery Protect inline with the inverter has the ability to switch on low voltage itself, So make the setting there. Then you won't be needed a high powered model either. The 12V DC loads only travel through the BP. The Battery Protect has a short circuit detection which works perfectly, but not when having loads with capacitors (as these are short circuits at startup as well).

    Hi
I got a shock when the battery temp recorded by my easysolar hit 35C. Digging through the community site I found it's not uncommon for the temp sensor to be a long way out. I also found that Venus OS has a screen to correct/compensate for sensor errors. However this doesn't seem to be present on the ccgx. Since finding the high temp, I've been monitoring by checking the battery terminal temp with an IR thermometer. The temp reported in the Victron setup is consistently close to 5C higher than the measured value. I'm assuming that reported temp is terminal temp. It also seems that the solar side is not temperature controlled, only the mains charger.
    So a couple of requests.
Please give us one of your excellent tech overviews on how the temperature sensing works/fits together.
Explain how to calibrate the sensors in the software.
