The Cologne Tank Duel

  • In the closing chapters of the war the German fortress city of Cologne needed to be taken. Ordered to get to the Rhine, Eagle 7 a brand new Pershing tank, went up against the might of the German Panther. Adam Makos wrote the excellent book Spearhead which details the war from the view of the crew of Eagle 7, and it's gunner, Clarence Smoyer.

Some minor mistakes with depicting Cologne Cathedrals western facade but in conclusion a job well done. The original video tape is also very interesting from a historical science point of view. And yes, everyone in Köln (Cologne) knows about the "Panzerduell" in the Komödienstraße. When I learned that he goes to the airshow I talked to one of the tankers there and asked where he was because I was a huge fan of him. It was sad because he told me he hadn't seen him this year which was odd because he's usually everywhere. We later learned that he fell ill and would pass away a few months later. I never got the chance to meet him in this life but I can wait 60-70 more years to meet him in the next one. What a hidden gem he was.

This was also 1945, there was no standard paint color for German tanks anymore, there were still tanks with Desert or Eastern Front camo that were redistributed to western divisions (in the book, the other German crew it follows got a "new" Pz.IV still in Italian Campaign camo). No one had seen the T26 before, he saw that long gun and muzzle brake and probably thought it was a Tiger at first.

It’s refreshing to hear a Russian say this. More often Russians say the Western Allies waited too long, and didn’t contribute much. And did it for selfish reasons, etc. The West contributed what they could. Yes I know the Soviets made the largest sacrifice by far, but the West contributed and earned a mention.

This is so well made! I only had knowledge of this battle because of the video of it in UA-cam, but without this i would have never know how all the battle was done. The animation is excellent.

You guys are f*cking awesome! Deeply researched, excellently scripted, great production, tempo and execution of the script first rate! Everything about this episode was done to immaculate perfection. I couldn't find a flaw if I had a magnifying glass. Out of the six different retellings of this tale yours is heads and shoulders above the rest. Bravo! Job well done!!
    Thank you.
