Balkan stereotypes are stupid (and dangerous)

  • When someone says the word “Balkan”, these are probably some of the things that the average person would associate with this rather mystical part of the world. With the turn of the century, the fall of communism and the barbaric bloodshed of the Yugoslav wars, the area of southeastern Europe has steadily acquired a refined new identity, an image that was intensely developed and promoted as time went on.
This very image has, through the expanding pop culture and internet meme culture, reached quite incredible notoriety, so that “Balkan” is nowadays, among natives and foreigners alike, the prime embodiment of oriental barbarism, craziness and hot temperament that is unique to this part of the world.

We had a Queen in Greece, later Queen-Mother, Friederika, imposed by the West against the Communists, who was in the Hitler Youth. Obviously German. The Glieksburg line were Danes, and previously, King Otto, was Bavarian.

Personally I think that the saddest part of all of this is the fact that us, Balkan people, have accepted these stereotypes. It's unsettling to see that some people that I've met who are my age, born in later 2000s, think in that way. I also appreciate you mentioning the Nixa Zizu thing, as it seems to be forgotten lately.
Much respect, mate. I'm glad to see that there are people who think like this.

But than again it just makes the west seem like a paradise when till the 60s-70s they treated black Americans in an even worse fate. The fact of the matter is that eastern europe went from being bombed to oblivion to basically being rebuilt because of the soviets. The issue here is in modern day, any communist revolution could be exploited heavily by those seeking to gain power. On the other hand any American reform comes slowly, with intense pushback from powerful people.

In Orientalism segment, in part where you mentioned Nazis reminds me of this quote:
"Yes, it would be worthwhile to study clinically, in detail, the steps taken by Hitler and Hitlerism and to reveal to the very distinguished, very humanistic, very Christian bourgeois of the twentieth century that without his being aware of it, he has a Hitler inside him, that Hitler inhabits him, that Hitler is his demon, that if he rails against him, he is being inconsistent and that, at bottom, what he cannot forgive Hitler for is not crime in itself, the crime against man, it is not the humiliation of man as such, it is the crime against the white man, the humiliation of the white man, and the fact that he applied to Europe colonialist procedures which until then had been reserved exclusively for the Arabs of Algeria, the coolies of India, and the blacks of Africa."

I think its a primitive and uneducated mans mind that groups people by color, mostly because ethnicity and culture takes more time for him to understand. Skin color isnt an issue, it almost never was, the only reason black people were treated the way they were, and still are somewhat, is because they happened to be easy targets. Every easy target is exploited, with no discrimination. Hitler was stopped by white men, white men were, almost exclusively, his victims. If the writer wants to say that all of us want to dominate and rule the world, I would say that isnt exclusive to white men, but white men have the most tools to pull it off and therefore are more tempted.

My parents always taught me to be an upright person, being from a place with geniuses and poets I have to show always my best, to be the most polite and intelligent I can be. Representing my parents and my origins in the best way possible.
As I’m a stereotypical looking Balkanian - tall and well trained - many thought I’m as gangster as my fellow people from the Balkans. As a teenager I thought that was cool to be feared but the older I got, the more I wanted to be respected for the wise words I speak and kindness i give as I was taught by my parents.
Our men are more than gangsters more than a “Baustelac”, our women are more than good looking bitches (also a stereotype in Germany) but It’s also up to every single of us to show to them, that we are better than that!

Learn more about black excellence, and see how it applies to balkan people. As a latino and paraguayan (and, while not white looking, not dark enough to suffer noticeable consequences), we have way less stereotypes and suffer way less prejudgment than many would think, so i learned about these things more through the lenses of african american oppresion than my living experience.

Just one correction. Greece, Bulgaria and Serbia had always distinct national identities. On the contrary it's western Europe which is a melting pot. Check the UK for example which has 4 ethnicities (English, Scots, Welsh, Irish), Spain (Castillans, Catalans, Suebi etc), Italy (Sicilians, South Italians, North Italians).. The examples are too many to be displayed in a single comment. That's why nationalism according to the beliefs of the West was established as an ideology (language, religion, culture) and enhanced with liberalism. The West had (and still has) an identity gap.
Balkans, and the mix of different peoples was enforced by the Ottoman authorities to divide and rule the region. That's why Greeks ruled in Romania, Bulgarians moved en masse to Macedonia, Albanians to southern Greece and Kosovo and Serbians to Bulgaria and vice versa. Early 1900 century, Imperialist powers such as Italy, Austria and Russia foresaw the fall of the Ottomans and one way or another managed to fuel the tensions in the area.
Orientalism is more appropriate to the West rather than the Balkans.

I think this stereotypical view of yours is blown up from German and Austrian stereotypes about us, and the typical Serbo-Croatian émigré that came to Germany and Austria. As a 19 year old who still lives in Bosnia, I find most of the stereotypes you talk about are overexaggerated. Sure, these people exist, but they aren't the majority. You view us like we are animals and good for nothing slaves of materialism and other such thought. The materialism in these parts comes from very long Ottoman occupation which has had it's effects, Ottoman culture was very lavish and materialistic thought was often more common than selfless thought. This is why you find Croats listening less to turbofolk-esque music, they weren't under Ottoman occupation for so long (or in some cases at all). The main themes in such tracks are ones of materialism, spending money on cheap women and expensive alcohol. This exact thought has been with us since Ottoman occupation and has never been properly phased out. To address another one of your points, nobody here wants to be like ''Pablo Escobar'' and become a criminal because ''It's the Balkan way''. In my age group, I struggle to see more than a very small but loud minority of people who think this way. Most people I talk to on a daily basis have ambitions like getting into university, or finding a stable job be it here or in other countries. On the other hand, the émigrés I've talked about prior are the more stereotypical types that more accurately match up with your view, and I think this is because you see them in Germany where you live. If you go on Spotify and look at the artists that produce music you voiced your negative opinions about, the top listeners usually come from places like Vienna, Stuttgart, Munich or Zurich, not Belgrade, Zagreb and Sarajevo. This is because the materialistic people migrate to the west for money, because they hold views that they need more money to have a ''good life''. While most of those who stay don't hold these thoughts and would rather stay here with their people instead of ''selling them out for money''. The diaspora who don't fit this category are war refugees or mixed couples who fled facing persecution. Your view of the youth that is still in the Serbo-Croatian states is one that fits the average elderly Yugonostalgic, who views the past with rose tinted glasses, it is a view of ignorance and not a view of critique.

Having traveled all my life through all Balkan countries, I'd say your own stereotypes of the Balkans are a bit faded away, maybe stuck somewhere around 1998-2000. Of course, the West being the West, refueled some of the powder in the keg with the Kosovo odyssey, but most of seriousness in the images you showed actually stayed where it belongs - to the past. Those guys with the pathetic "nationalist" flags that are doing "nazi" rallies are mostly teenage football hooligans and thankfully even don't understand the ideas behind those symbols, let alone resorting to violence.
Having said that - the powder keg is still dangerous, so don't play around with it. The world has to accept we like to drink, have our black sense of humor, speak politically incorrect stuff. Trying to impose "diversity" and "western liberal culture" by force - that falls directly into the category of the first part of your video with the nazis and colonization efforts. The important thing is - after 2000s, we might laugh at violence, speak about violence, hate each other, even have a fist or two thrown after a bottle of Rakia on who's da real Balkanets, but at least we don't bring out the guns :)
    So don't kick the barrel.

    Opasan video.
Želeo sam da pravim sličan sadržaj, ali mi je neizmerno drago što si ti tu da neguješ zaostavštinu humanizma i slobodoljubivosti.

I find it funny that by making the parallel between Albanians and "Turkish" barbarism you're playing exactly into the narratives and conspiracies of ethno-nationalists circles within the ex-Yugo and Greek states. That's exactly What was used against ethnic Albanian and Bosnian communities during the collapse of Yugoslavia and the Balkan Wars. "They're just turks."
The reason Albanians consider themselves local (and most historians and archeologists as well) is because there simply isn't another explanation for them. Linguistically they are completely separated from Europe. Genetically they are also completely separated from the rest of Europe. You can't really find anything similar anywhere else so, logically, they have to just be native.
The only two other "explanations" primarily promoted by Slavic and Greek ethno-nationalists are two (contradicting) theories, one claiming that they are a result of Celtic migration and another claiming they are a result of Egyptian migration. The first claim suggest this migration would have happened sometime in the bronze age, the other suggest this migration would have happened sometime in the 2nd-4th century.
If you're gonna try to come off as an intellectual on something, at least do some reading before hand.

Druze da li si pogledao video do kraja uopste? Radi se o samokritici zarad poboljsanja iskrivljene i neistinite slike. Dovoljno je da prebacis na poslednje 3 minute.

Romania is even worse seen by Western colonizers: both a Balkanic barbarian and Gypsy subhuman. When only Southern Romania is actually Balkan and Gypsies came from India. Nobody knows true Romania: not Gypsies, not Dracula, not bloody violent inter-ethnic Balkan wars. Best way to describe Romania is: strongly influenced by the Byzantine Empire in both culture, history and religion. With even deeper Dacian and Thracian roots and being colonized by the Romans.

I know a guy who went to Germany and I asked him:" So what do you think of Germany"
He replayed with:" OMG I've seen civilisation, I was in Lidl and Yisk
First things first: he went to Ingolstadt wich is about the same size as the area he's from.
Second thing second: he has a yisk 2 bus stops away from his own. But the german yisk is more organized...

I dont believe that Western europeans stereotype image about other are any different than other cultures perception of westerners except for the fact that westerners have distinguished themselves from other westerners by a more "marketing" like culture. With that said they have been better salesmen througg history. Simple as that.
Personaly as a half slav and half westerner living in the west.
I make huge distinctions between for example Chinese, japanese, and thai people, turkish and iranian people, Or for that matter between west and east africans.

Balkan has not changed much since the Roman times. Then the divided Illyrian tribes fought between themselves like not long ago Serbs, Croats and Bosnians.
