    When I did Keto, after the first 3 weeks my performance started back. A little less explosive but better endurance. And after 5 weeks started getting pumps again. Not quite as good as on carbs, but still good. It was a great experience and I felt great. Also, I kept my protein at 20-25% and went into keto. I did build some muscle, but did lose a fuck ton of fat. And carbs at 30 grams or less. You can do more protein if your working out like a beast and still be in keto. Those numbers that you generally see posted to be in keto are for regular people.

    So after competing this year I started doing a modified keto type diet to stay lean and still feeling good.... So I would still do carbs for breakfast, carbs pre-workout via like apple crumble pie and white rice post workout.... during the day like avo and coconut oil.... but I do add fruit with every meal... blueberries, pineapple, orange.... and still do 30min fasted cardio a day and my weight is sticking around 270-275lb and around 5% bodyfat. And I feel great.

    Fastest way to get into Ketosis is fasting for 72 hrs. To much protein can keep you out of ketosis because amino acids can start Gluconeogenesis(building of sugar). The 10 pound drop is from water loss. Also, do not stay in a low carb state and not push into Ketosis because you will continue to feel like shit. You want to be in Ketosis so you are using ketones as fuel/energy. If you are just in a low carb state your body is trying to still use glucose as energy instead of ketones. Also, you can buy diabetic ketone strips at the store and urinate on them to see if you are in Ketosis.

    Another awesome podcast....I just love Seth's energy!
    I always wondered how bodybuilders can do what they do and maintain a keto diet. Doesn't eliminating carbs completely deplete your muscles from glycogen leaving flat and stringy?
    I was on keto for almost a year. Fouad you have to try using full whipping cream in your bullet proof coffee along with the butter.....its gold. Also I learned that before you can introduce cheat meals, you need to be keto adapted not just in ketosis. Keto adapted means all your cells mitocondria have switched from using cards for fuel to using ketones. Keto adaption takes some people weeks to months.

    Idk where u all live. But I live in Ky, and we have a massive population of deer to the point that it’s way over populated ! Every week someone around here hits a deer and totals their car. That’s only the beginning of the problem we have with the over population of deers here. And that’s AFTER everyone goes out and kills a trophy buck. But hunting goes back for so many generations of tradition around here. The deer serves a greater purpose. Dads and sons go out and have a better relationship because of hunting, as one small example. There’s a lot to say on this topic.
    But regardless weather it’s a buck or doe, someone gets the meat !
    NO ONE around here lives the meat out to rot. To the point that people throw dead deers laying on the road in the back of their truck to take home to eat.

    When it comes to training splits do you feel there should be a difference in splits for someone on gear vs not? I know there’s typically faster recovery, so interested to see if you feel having a rest day between some of the large muscle groups is optimal for growth and recovery. (Like 5 or 6 days a week) Or does it not matter and there isn’t much of a difference in how splits should be?

    Keto rocks, it does affect strength, though. A cheat meal hurts unless it’s a keto “cheat”. Working on a targeted keto around workouts once gyms open.

  • @AndrewOudin
    @AndrewOudin 5 років тому

    Long-ish term keto is different for bodybuilders!
    A ton of the info on Keto that you will find is based on research or anecdotes on non-strength-athete people, sometimes even sedentary people. Very little info is available for bodybuilders except in contest prep, so it is a different game for maintenance. The chief difference is protein intake. Most highly trained strength athletes can eat 50% or more of their total daily calories in protein without being kicked out of ketosis, and if the same athlete continues to train while on a 70-80% fat diet it is likely that the athlete will experience significant muscular fatigue and burnout after 6-12 weeks.

    • @AndrewOudin
      @AndrewOudin 5 років тому

      Dr. Dominic D’Agostino “ I know athletes that can eat 200 grams of carbs a day and still stay in ketosis day in and day out. They have tremendous output, I mean they’re exercising four to six hours a day, but just an example that you can’t always just assign someone macronutrient ratios or macronutrient prescription and expect an outcome because everybody’s different.”

    • @AndrewOudin
      @AndrewOudin 5 років тому

      “ some people in the fitness community that go up to 40 or 50% protein. For the world of ketogenics,
      that’s a higher protein. As you increase the protein percentages of the ketogenic diet, it will lower the
      ketone levels. Protein is gluconeogenic up to a certain point and it can also stimulate to a smaller
      degree than carbohydrates but it can stimulate the release of insulin which is negatively correlated
      with ketogenesis, with ketone production. Adding fiber and fat can help buffer the release of glucose
      into the blood stream. There’s some athletes especially high-performing athletes that can get up to
      200 grams of protein a day and still be well into ketosis if they’re large and active. The protein level
      is the variable that needs to be adjusted depending on the clinical scenario and the individual, and
      the athlete” -D’Agostino www.bodybuilding.com/documents/bodybuilding.com-podcast-transcript-episode-4b.pdf

    all these diets like keto work on one simple pretence : your remove one part of your diet(carbs) and that makes it easier for your body to work with the rest more efficiently . Thats how every single diet based on some restriction works and lets be honest, not eating carbs is a restriction. I am all for keto, but bowl of fruit before work out is a must for me.
