Ok so just to give a bit of context, this anime takes place during the Edo period of Japan (back when the samurai were still a thing), but Earth was invaded by aliens, which caused rapid modernisation. But because this is still during the samurai era (technically), a lot of people stick to the cultural values and principles of the time which is why they still wear traditional clothing and use swords despite the fact that they have rocket launchers and guns.
Ur right about mc really had one of the saddest past typees and basically had ptsd which u can get hint from his looks and some part of openings, u should definetly start this anime this is my absolute favourite and combination of serious arcs and slice of life is perfect

Gintama is peak comedy, but at the same time has serious arcs that break your heart hard. It starts kind of slow (episodes 1&2 are fillers celebrating the release of the anime), with comedy aimed for a japanese audience, but soon becomes one of, if not the best comedy ever.
In simple words it's an historical anime about the time when old Japan was visited by people from other countries. This event impresed people of that time because of the advance technology of visitors (big ships, guns, etc), and represented here as aliens. One of the key visual aspects of the show is how tradition coexist with modernity. However, the real selling point ot the show is it's comedy and huge amount of reference to other animes and popular media. The best comparison is rurouni kenshin, but with a ton more of d*ck jokes
Gintama is pretty chill.... Its more like the Simpsons (character and world building) or Rick and Morty (fpr its chaotic/ comedic nature) combined with the good anime stuff :) The serious parts only hits in the later seasons but they are so worth it!!! The main character is a war veteren with PTSD... glad you noticed that he is gloomy most of the time he is alone :)
I'm gonna sound like I've been living under a rock, but I never seen those before lol.. yeah I noticed it more in op13 when he's running alone till the others join him
"How is this humanly possible?" Because it's *Gintama openings* My fav are OP 1, 4, 5, 12, 13, 15, 17, 21 😆 But favourite as they may be, needless to say I honestly REALLY love all of Gintama openings 😊
It makes me laugh when you want to talk about something that caught your attention from the anime, but the epic music doesn't let you talk because it distracts you, yes, the music of the ops is fire.
Gintama is my all-time favorite anime. In Gintama, EVERY character is significant. Eventho they only got introduced briefly at the early episode or got potrayed only as a funny character, they will eventually contribute a lot to the story. Spoiler alert. Only Gintama that has a fight over the anime itself. 🙂 And Gintama OP in ep 224... Oh boy.... 😂
i loooove the second opening it makes me cry every time as that the lyrics were simple japanese so i understand it and it makes me love it more. i love the other openings too tho 😭❤️

Ah yes, the anime that has it all. Great comedy, great drama, great action, great characters and great plot 😌🙌 Not to mention all the references are 💯
