Gintama is rated really highly on MAL for a reason. The serious arcs are some of the best in anime, but its mainly a comedy anime and what makes it the best is that despite it being fun, goofy and hilarious it can pull some really incredible and serious moments. I guess the word I would describe it as is "lovable", you spend so much time laughing with these characters that the serious moments hit you harder.
Also it’s because around the edo period which is gintama setting. Around then it wasn’t allowed to have or use weapons . That’s why he uses a wooden sword. Only police could have it
The show is about how a war veteran copes with a life where he lost the war. That's how much i can tell yoi without telling spoilers. If you are going to watch it though, skip episodes 1 and 2 since it's a special for manga readers. The actual episode starts on episode 3.
The reason Gintoki (main protag with silver hair) has a wooden sword is because the use or possession of real swords is illegal/banned and only government officials have them (or terrorist whose trying to drive away the amanto, aliens, away). The reason the ban on swords was placed was because when the Amanto 1st invaded Edo Japan and forced the Japanese government to open its doors, the samurai didn’t like how easily the government agreed to the amanto’s demands and started a war to drive them away (war itself was 20 years before the start of the anime) but ultimately failed due to the amanto superior technology but even so saw that the samurai were potential threats and such ban the use of swords. Fellow Gintama fans please correct me if I made any mistakes in my explanation and thank you
Nope, it's pretty much correct. A more condensed version would be. Gintoki uses a wooden sword to avoid conflict. Also because he can smacc fools senseless instead of just straight up killing them. And before you say that Gintoki's Bokutou is strong than a normal one, that's not necessarily the case. Gintama Greatness yo. I'm one of those people that recommend this series openings to you and Thanks a lot for doing a reaction to it. He uses an actual sword a few times throughout the series for a few fights, however his wooden sword is made out of the strongest wood in the universe 😂
I love that every second reaction always is "i wanna see more fights"... when you watch it you often feel the same at the beginning and ask yourself "when does the action pick up, I wanna see the serious fights". But when the serious arcs start you will be: "wait no! go back to the comedy!"
It's hard to explain the "power" in Gintama. But the main characters use pure power, like swordmanship and guns. No "special attack", they even joke about how hard it is to make Gintama fighting games because we don't have those super flashy attack name. While other shounen anime fights are like "fighting to become stronger" and "for my nakama", Gintama isn't like that. I love Gintama because it touches every single genre you can name. Gintama talk about a lot of aspect in life while making joke about it. The actions are just a plus for me because I don't really watch action anime. The storytelling and characters are what making Gintama my number 1.
Highly recommend this anime. I never finished it, because once it got into end game territory, I stoped since I knew I would be heart broken when it ended. I’m finally rewatching it with the intention of finishing it. All of the openings are amazing and I regularly just listen to them all as songs, but openings 5, 9, 11, and 13 are my favorites off the top of my head. This has all probably been said, but a good synopsis is that during the edo period of feudal Japan aliens started to invade earth. This is why there are both Samurai and modern technology and city scapes with future space syfy themes. There was a 20 year war a few years before the story starts. where the samurai fought against their government and the alien forces taking over. Gintoki, the main character grew up during this time and was a significant fighter in the war near the end. His side lost and he essentially re-started his life. The main goal, so to speak, is for Gintoki and all the members of his found family and those in his community to defend and preserve the new home they’ve found and made. The beginning is just slice of life with smaller serious arch’s to establish an enormous cast of amazing characters. The serious arch’s get longer the farther into the series you get all culminating into the big scale enemies and battles at the end. The world building is phenomenal as well. They live in a district nearer to the outskirts of the city which is why it looks like they hop between a village and a city. The district has a more feudal Japanese style to it where as the city has more alien presence and influences so it looks modern. This show is amazing and is my favorite anime and even show of all time. It’s both a shame more people don’t watch it and a blessing since you don’t get the crazy people like in more popular main stream anime’s.
Gintama is an anime unlike any you’ve seen before, its about a veteran samurai named Gintoki and his friends doing odd jobs since being a samurai is now illegal ever since aliens took over. Its mostly focused on comedic interactions between the main trio and other side characters. There is a serious store with loads of world building but it’s blended so well with the comedic focus you can’t help but remember Gintama as a comedy. Its probably my favorite anime as it doesn’t take its self to seriously and explores wild concepts while maintaining its more serious and deep story. One problem most people have is that it seems to have a lot of filler but that filler is actually some of the best moments in the anime which will make you split your sides laughing. All in all Gintama is a 10/10 anime that I highly recommend.
Gintama is an anime where "the friends we made along the way" is the real focus. Technically the overarching story (without spoilers) is that aliens invaded earth in the Edo period, which caused a war between aliens and samurai. Eventually the samurai lost, but there are still some people around who don't accept what happened. There is a certain character wants to destroy the country, and he causes most of the problems in the more serious arcs. However, until near the end of the anime, those arcs are really spread out, and in between there are a ton of characters and stories that are given their own chance to shine. Those times in-between are what make Gintama so amazing.
Gintama surpassed one piece for me..its a comedy anime with action..the ratio of action to fun stuff is just like your life..the ratio of the times you had fun and good times to you overcoming adversity in your whole life..probably 70% - 30%..luffy,naruto and natsu follow a road where they need to kick ass and get more and more stronger..its a road full of bloodshed despite their intention but they committed to it..in gintama its a little bit different..they follow a different route and because of this gintoki is the best character ever created in the medium of entertainment..its a slow burner..they throw a lot of spices in there but when its time to eat..its gonna be the best meal you've ever had in a while..1 question, would you rather die by a real sword or a wooden sword if you're gonna die regardless?
I get what you mean but the writer Sorachi Hideaki said that Gintoki is already a grown-up adult character which makes him more mature than Luffy and Naruto and others. Therefore Luffy's actions resonate with his maturity. In conclusion, Each Series has its own parameters of the character's behavior while leaving room for development. Besides in terms of storytelling Gintama is second to only One Piece.
Gintama is about live intensefull with people that you loved. Keeping your ideals. Learning and teaching everyday. Gintama learns me so many things It's my favorite anime so far
Gintama is better than most shonen anime out there, don't let the notion of "Its comedy or its just funny or he uses a stick" ruin the emotional and great things this anime provide for you. Gintama and Jojo are the best long running anime shows I have ever watch and read.
Weirdest part of Gintama isn't the crazyness, seriousness, comedy, etc., etc., it's that Japan *FUCKING LOVED* these OP's far more then the actual show/manga series. How it wasn't far more beloved is still sad even though it had 100's of episodes and years for its manga run.
Well he carries a wooden sword because swords are banned by the government due to various reasons Though he does use real swords when the going gets tough
All i can say is that this anime is 90% comedy and 10% serious moments, This is the number 1 anime in comedy and 4th wall break, it evwn hs episode in which one of the character is the author himself
@crystalblade13 No, its 90 to 10 like he said unless you skip the craziest stuff. It's one of the best comedies around and power level babies actively tried to ruin its community by pretending to like the series while avoiding the comedy (which is 90% of it and its strongest point)
All Gintama OPs are amazing no doubt. I don't rank openings, but my favorites are OPs 5, 8, 9 , 11, 13, 15, 17, 18, and 21. "they seem like they're always chilling and having fun" - I wanna highlight this comment because essentially, this is what made Gintama my favorite piece of media ever. Gintama is a story brimming with life, and it's only natural to want to live your life having fun. That's why when the serious moments come and their fun and peace are threatened, Gintoki (the main character) and the others FIGHT HARD to return to those fun days. Gintama's whole story and all its characters are the closest to the human condition amongst any anime, in my opinion. And that's also why I love it. Gintama at its core is a comedy. I know you said that that kinda prevented you from starting it, but trust me, when I started Gintama, I wasn't in it for the comedy too. But it slowly takes you in. Some way or another, Gintama WILL find a way to hook you, and it's different for everyone. I personally was hooked by the events of Episode 13, which is honestly earlier than a lot of people do. Some are hooked at the 50s episode mark. Some are hooked past a hundred episodes. It's really, really different for everyone. But I promise, I frikin SWEAR, it's all WORTH IT in the end. Gintama is a show that REWARDS you for your patience. For a first time watcher, the first season is the hardest to watch through. But it really does get better the more you watch it. Or rather, as a lot of Gintama fans say, it's not that Gintama gets better, it's YOU who gets better at watching it. I'm on my rewatch on it and it's really true; a lot of episodes I found boring before were actually amazing to watch in hindsight. That's because the storytelling is really subtle. A lot, and I mean A LOT of details you didn't think were important at first actually are highly significant to the story later, and these details are scattered all throughout the anime, even starting from the very first episode (which is why it's HIGHLY risky to skip episodes), and that's what makes this a great story and a favorite of mine. In terms of watching order, here: -Eps 3-201 (you can watch Eps 1-2 by Ep 22 I think, but you can also just opt not to watch them) -Gintama Shinyaku Benizakura-hen (1st movie) -Gintama' A.K.A. Gintama 2011 (Eps 202-252) -Gintama': Enchousen (Eps 253-265) -Gintama Kanketsu-hen: Yorozuya yo Eien Nare (2nd movie) -Gintama° A.K.A. Gintama 2015 (Eps 266-316) -Gintama. (Eps 317-328) -Gintama.: Porori-hen (Eps 329-341)** -Gintama.: Silver Soul Arc (Eps 342-353) -Gintama.: Silver Soul Arc Part 2 (Eps 354-367) **the events of Porori-hen actually happen before Ep 300, it was just animated/premiered later due to various reasons lmao. You can choose to watch this season after Ep 299, finish it, and then go back to Ep 300, but I think you might have to skip the opening commentary of Ep 329 and just go straight to the episode, because it has spoilers I think for what happens in Eps 300-316, but other than that, there's nothing to worry about watching this season before Ep 300 I really hope you get to finish this series. Gintama's storytelling is something I fervently want everyone to get to experience. It's really unlike any other. Thanks for the reaction!!
gintama is about a war veteran's daily life with messing with the police, a terrorist, and multiple people while making dirty jokes about other anime and immature jokes
In opening 13, when you saud it has sad vibes and asked if someone died, I dont want to make any spoiler, so I’m just gonna say that it is when the main plot starts :))
Gintama is an antiplosion, a contrast of comedy, emotion and some of the most brutally viceral animated combat you'll ever find, which somehow all raise each other and the viewer investment higher. Juist if you watch it, take it slow, embrace the fact that it is a comedy and don't skip to the fights; it's all balanced out for emotional weight and tension/grief relief.
So in the first season of the anime there’s actually no goal that’s why the author is having a hard time to close this anime but in episode 300 the action will kick in and the theme of this anime is a great balance of comedy and action the setting of the story is in the edo period where the samurai lives and it was invaded by the aliens called amanto and that’s where the fights will go-the characters are really funny and unexpectedly strong oh and there’s some dramas too just a warning
I like to think of Gintama as an anime that has mostly comedy episodes, but also a mostly tragic story if you think about it (especially Gintoki's past) They have dick jokes, intense psychological battles over toilet paper, and an entire arc where the main characters turn into screwdrivers And they also have the most bloody and brutal fights I've seen in anime, and episodes that reduced me into a sobbing mess multiple times in only like twenty minutes
The story line of this anime is just like instant noodles, really messy because 70% of it is slice of life, but the last 3 seasons are straight up action
@@BlackGenie i would say its fine to watch the fight scenes because they have no meaning without context. So even if you have seen the fight already it will still feel like its a new fight if you watch the anime. So yeah watch the fights if you want to.
IM A MONTH LATE but i wanna explain anyways: Gintama isnt really like most shonen shows, the fights arent the main focus. The reason people like the fights are mainly because of the story that they drive forward with the characters, the emotion that it brings. Its very in the moment, most serious arcs in the show are only around 5-6 episodes, but they tell a great story and a great lesson and expand the characters involved. By the end, its something you wont ever forget, it just takes time to ramp up.
also there isn't a main goal, it's more about a bunch of scarred people who already have gone through things and the effects of the past on their current lives and how they try to deal with it, so expect sad backstories like GOAT Piece
You're missing out. Best anime ever! I'd rank this over all shounen anime that's out there. Gintama does a lot of dark humor too. So it might not be everyone's cup of tea. But if you can get over that, the serious arcs to awesome! Soo suspenseful too! And super sad too!
Well lemme summarize GinTama, it's an anime about 'Humanity', it's just uh basically- Okay GinTama is about everything, the best thing about it are the characters, and yeah, my fav op is op13, props on finding out ;-)
The wooden sword is a joke not many get. Remember this is a comedy/drama/action in that order lol. You see this scenes in every anime. The guy smashing a concrete wall with a metallic bat in second. Or this other guy making a whole in the street with a single punch bare handed without taking any damage. You get the point.... Well the wooden sword is a joke to that cliche. It's just convenient. thats the joke. You can laugh now :v
Gintama is about a samurai with a silver perm, a *REDACTED* girl, and a pair of glasses. Ft. Pirates, Gorilla, Mayo Lover, a Gorilla, a Sadist, Terrorists, and a Gorilla.
I think you probably know these by now but Gintoki uses wooden sword since the alien called amanto took over the whole nation and the samurai starts war. Amanto feared the samurai even though they outnumbered and outclassed them just because they are not easily broken and keep standing up whenever they go down. For this amanto ban the sword to make samurai lost their will to fight. Going back to gintoki's wooden sword, he uses real sword actually in the past but since he is one of the true samurai he neglected sword ban and instead play with it by using wooden sword since it is not consider as real sword thus they cannot arrest nor accused him of carrying or using a sword.
Oh in addition the only personnel who can use real sword is the police forces. And a little theory about gintoki's wooden sword is it represent his resolve. It doesn't break easily if he has firm resolve but if he waver due to fear, sadness or stress his wooden sword break (in fights). So yeah you might see gintoki's wooden sword to break multiple times.
The biggest problem with Gintama is that if you're not a big fan of comedy or anime that takes a while to get into the good stuff it wouldn't be an easy journey.
Here is the reason why gintama is so good imo.
1. Interesting plot
2. Great character development
3. Best Comedy
4. Dope and brutal fight scenes
Even the Side-Side characters have loads of personality and development, lol. It's so well written.
ShinachiHChan facts, I think this is the only show where in the finale I actually care about literally every character in play
Also, the voice actors are so on point with each characters!
also, the fact that all the characters are based on real people or folk tales. There's the fact it very very loosely follows Japanese history

I always see you in every Gintama Reactions.
@@gravistech4963 yes fair point
@@Kewpie-2001 I cant help it😁
Anime = yes, but in manga one piece is better
Gintama is about a war veteran who adopts 2 kids to cope with his PTSD all while dealing with a ghost from his past that comes back to haunt him.
If you love ke op 13 & 21. You must watch Gintama ed 17. Because Gintama + SPYAIR = PERFECTION
Bro is the only one i know who cant recognise the same character after 11 ops
HOW DO PEOPLE NOT GET GOOSEBUMPS AT 24:02
maaan all the genres are in gintama, and every arc is a blast u should start watching it bro
Last opening is amazing, the feels...
The wooden sword.. he bought it on a tv program lol
When you watch gintama sir.. Expect to see doragonbleapiece
gintama is all over the place is so much comedy you cant really take it serious but when they go hard they go really hard
i really recommend watching it
I’m glad I’m not the only one who saw the fights and hopped on it SO FAST
cz it has the prefect pic of how it makes u in a min cry & in a min lough it has one of the best stories . drama . fights u ever seen
you gonna fuck with it bro, this man Gintoki wears a Chopper hat in some episodes and they got a whole Sabaody parody.
Gintama is one of the best animes I ever seen in my fucking life
Gintama is about live intensefull with people that you loved. Keeping your ideals. Learning and teaching everyday. Gintama learns me so many things
It's my favorite anime so far
Lolol ok, so, Gintama actually makes fun of itself for not having a clear goal like "becoming the pirate king" 😂
the wooden sword's what got me to watch the whole series tbh
Gintama is better than most shonen anime out there, don't let the notion of "Its comedy or its just funny or he uses a stick" ruin the emotional and great things this anime provide for you. Gintama and Jojo are the best long running anime shows I have ever watch and read.
Weirdest part of Gintama isn't the crazyness, seriousness, comedy, etc., etc., it's that Japan *FUCKING LOVED* these OP's far more then the actual show/manga series. How it wasn't far more beloved is still sad even though it had 100's of episodes and years for its manga run.
Well he carries a wooden sword because swords are banned by the government due to various reasons
Though he does use real swords when the going gets tough
Quick summary
Single dad being raised by his daughter and kid brother.
All i can say is that this anime is 90% comedy and 10% serious moments,
This is the number 1 anime in comedy and 4th wall break, it evwn hs episode in which one of the character is the author himself
In terms of watching order, here:
-Eps 3-201 (you can watch Eps 1-2 by Ep 22 I think, but you can also just opt not to watch them)
-Gintama Shinyaku Benizakura-hen (1st movie)
-Gintama' A.K.A. Gintama 2011 (Eps 202-252)
-Gintama': Enchousen (Eps 253-265)
-Gintama Kanketsu-hen: Yorozuya yo Eien Nare (2nd movie)
-Gintama° A.K.A. Gintama 2015 (Eps 266-316)
-Gintama. (Eps 317-328)
-Gintama.: Porori-hen (Eps 329-341)**
-Gintama.: Silver Soul Arc (Eps 342-353)
-Gintama.: Silver Soul Arc Part 2 (Eps 354-367)
**the events of Porori-hen actually happen before Ep 300, it was just animated/premiered later due to various reasons lmao. You can choose to watch this season after Ep 299, finish it, and then go back to Ep 300, but I think you might have to skip the opening commentary of Ep 329 and just go straight to the episode, because it has spoilers I think for what happens in Eps 300-316, but other than that, there's nothing to worry about watching this season before Ep 300
I really hope you get to finish this series. Gintama's storytelling is something I fervently want everyone to get to experience. It's really unlike any other. Thanks for the reaction!!
Gintama is a anime where the main protagonist who is a lazy bum trying to live an ordinary life forgetting all his past as a war veteran
gintama is about a war veteran's daily life with messing with the police, a terrorist, and multiple people while making dirty jokes about other anime and immature jokes
gintama is , you knwo that funny guy in the class that when he comeback home .... yu can add some bloody sword fight too
he uses a wooden sword because he doesn’t wanna kill anymore.
he uses a wooden sword because the aliens banned swords
It's not coincidence that all of your favorites ops had songs from spyair. They are awesomen
OP 9 and OP13 are GOATS
In opening 13, when you saud it has sad vibes and asked if someone died, I dont want to make any spoiler, so I’m just gonna say that it is when the main plot starts :))
The girl can fight too(this killed me)
Everybody is a gangsta till gintoki holds a real sword
If life did not teach you gintama will teach you every thing
Gintama is an antiplosion, a contrast of comedy, emotion and some of the most brutally viceral animated combat you'll ever find, which somehow all raise each other and the viewer investment higher.
Juist if you watch it, take it slow, embrace the fact that it is a comedy and don't skip to the fights; it's all balanced out for emotional weight and tension/grief relief.
"All openings" didnt included fail versions of them
So in the first season of the anime there’s actually no goal that’s why the author is having a hard time to close this anime but in episode 300 the action will kick in and the theme of this anime is a great balance of comedy and action the setting of the story is in the edo period where the samurai lives and it was invaded by the aliens called amanto and that’s where the fights will go-the characters are really funny and unexpectedly strong oh and there’s some dramas too just a warning
I like to think of Gintama as an anime that has mostly comedy episodes, but also a mostly tragic story if you think about it (especially Gintoki's past)
They have dick jokes, intense psychological battles over toilet paper, and an entire arc where the main characters turn into screwdrivers
And they also have the most bloody and brutal fights I've seen in anime, and episodes that reduced me into a sobbing mess multiple times in only like twenty minutes
How tf is he guessing all my favourites🤯
The story line of this anime is just like instant noodles, really messy because 70% of it is slice of life, but the last 3 seasons are straight up action
Gintama is about a single dad trying to raise his two kids
You should react to gintama Best fight scene
ua-cam.com/video/bG5JN5fx4nc/v-deo.html I think this is the Good one, hope you react to it😣
Don't watch this please. Fights without context are not as impactful and they spoil some important things. Just get to them watching the anime.
yea,if you're going to watch the anime better not spoil yourself by watching fight scenes
@@BlackGenie i would say its fine to watch the fight scenes because they have no meaning without context. So even if you have seen the fight already it will still feel like its a new fight if you watch the anime.
So yeah watch the fights if you want to.
This anime has amazing fights and is really funny
When the reactors look away from screen due to music it's not reaction to opening but opening song...
BEST anime ever with FMAB and HxH
Just wanna say. The women in this anime are low key thicc without exposing stuff like other anime.
also there isn't a main goal, it's more about a bunch of scarred people who already have gone through things and the effects of the past on their current lives and how they try to deal with it, so expect sad backstories like GOAT Piece
His wooden sword is a special and powerful sword
"the girl Can fight to ?!' haha yeah a lot
His wooden stick has a bankai
You're missing out. Best anime ever! I'd rank this over all shounen anime that's out there. Gintama does a lot of dark humor too. So it might not be everyone's cup of tea. But if you can get over that, the serious arcs to awesome! Soo suspenseful too! And super sad too!
You should react to the gintama ending too
Their goal is both nothing and everything in one smorgasbord of laughs and emotions
others: describe Gintama in one word?
me: Gintama
others: what?
me: Gintama is Gintama
His wooden sword never breaks so that's why he uses it.
It broke at least 3 times
i can't wait to see him watch the bathroom scene in yagyu arc
Sakura no Mitsutsuki is the best anime opening of all time imo.
My quick summary of Gintama ---> Absolute randomness
Well lemme summarize GinTama, it's an anime about 'Humanity', it's just uh basically- Okay GinTama is about everything, the best thing about it are the characters, and yeah, my fav op is op13, props on finding out ;-)
I’m currently on ep 88 pretty good so far. Can someone tell me what to expect from here?
Everything
I love 13 but 9 has to be my favourite
Good reaction, hope you react to gintama ending as well
I only watched op 1 because i just starting watching gintama so i don't any spoilers from the other ops
its rlly good that he uses a wooden swords, tho sometimes he chasnges, theres a reason for him yto use it
The wooden sword is a joke not many get.
Focused a bit too much on the music, there are a lot of information inside the opening aswell
i started watch this anime and it is very good show
@@BlackGenie don't skip the fillers they are amazing.
yea gintama is one of those that have great n fun filler
SevenTeen the filler is the serious arcs 😂😂
