During the colonialism era, most hunting outposts started off as trade post. It's likely it started as a trade post and evolved into a hunting outpost when they saw what the predators were hunting.
I like your "reading between the lines" on the different factions. I find myself gravitating to this one more than the others so far. But I'll probably try and play a little of each at least once.
@4:39 We know from Todd Howard himself that very early on we go to Kreet, a moon of Anselon in the Narion star system. From the star map seen in the official gameplay reveal trailer, it appears that Narion is very close to both Sol and Alpha Centauri. So its safe to infer from Emil Pagliarulo's memo that the Crimson Fleet is now either in the United Colonies backyard or at their gates which is far from the Kryx system.
Thanks for doing these analyses! Funny, I'm 56 and have NEVER been interested in lore and story building in video games, for some reason. Not sure why, but, for the first time, I'm really interested in seeing how this lore builds out. Gonna pay attention this time, as I play. lol Really enjoying this series. :) EDIT after watch: I think you made a very persuasive argument on your resources #2 scenario. Avoiding colony extinction from being sucked dry of resources. My money's on that one.
Bethesda games like The Elder Scroll and Fallout have interesting lore, but the lore usually inconsistent between games, so expect Starfield 2 will retcon some lore
Thanks Jeff! Yes, there’s lots of interesting stories to find. Feels a little like dark souls lore right now where you really have to look for it, haha.
The idea that maybe the demand from the other colonies threatened the Freestar planets with an ecological cascade that could ruin the hunters’ way of life is actually really cool. We don’t talk a lot about those kind of serious consequences in casual media. I love the idea!
I plan on making a Freestar Collective Industrialist build that specializes in weapons customization due to working for the many weapons companies in Akila but with a dream to keep exploring like Coe did, to push the boundaries. This would be a natural inclination for the character.
I believe that the intention on Bethesda here is to assert the paralel between the 2 America's realities, the america that rebelled against the British empire for freedom, and the america of today, and so I believe that the reason that the confederation turned it's back on the UC was due to heavy taxation or the likes of it
I'm curious about the time period between the establishment of the colonies and when the war started. What frayed relations between the two sides? What was the intent from the UC and 'central' systems? Was that intent unified or the result of a specific office or group? As for a playthrough, I'm definitely interested in the double-agent role between the Crimson Fleet and UC. As a comparison, in Fallout: New Vegas my character was liked by the NCR, Khans, and most groups that weren't the Legion or Powder Gangers. It's convenient for me, and potentially lessens bloodshed between other groups.
I hope your theories are correct, because if they are, it's going to be a very interesting dynamic. Especially if we as the player can nudge factions in different directions.
I like this FreeStar Collective vibes... when I saw the artworks for the first time, I want to be a member of this fraction. Okay, still five month to go...
It depends on how Bethesda implements them. Right now i'm leaning towards United Colonies or Crimson Fleet. It would be nice if you can start your own faction, but that's probably asking too much. I guess we'll find out...
thanks for analysis. It's good American journalism. I have a few remarks. do you think Crimson Fleet and Freestar Collective were one band waging war on these imperialist United Colonies? and that once Freestar Collective chose peace, a group refused and formed their own faction (Crimson Fleet) and they turned against all? maybe there are spies (on behalf of the United Colonies) among the Freestar Collective who pushed them to make peace. it could be that Constellation made a discovery that diverted the greed of the United Colonies. or else these feudalist Ryujin Industries is behind this cursed war to take advantage of the discovery of Constellation and as the war stopped it created Crimson Fleet to shuffle the cards. I never trust those who control the money. chaos = divide of United Colonies (this is the mod that I will create with the creation kit of starfield)
I was thinking just the other day that (i) given that bethesda will focus on elder scrolls and fallout during the next decade and (ii) the fact that in starfield there will be no unexplored "land masses" (for lack of a better term) for future sequels, the game will most likely feature a war between those factions either during the main story (most likely) or in a DLC.
Personally I think if Starfield takes off as intended, Microsoft will put different teams on SF, TES, and FO in future. It'll have gone past the stage of where one team can handle three franchises, and "we're bored and want to do something different" won't cut any ice at Microsoft. Think of the lost profits in not releasing TES 6 and 7 already. FO 5 should already be on the shelves, lol. Also, there is plenty of (potentially) unexplored land in Starfield. Stars don't just stop at the edge of the map; what's further out there? And if the artefact the player is investigating/building is a portal, where does it go? But sure, more factions, more intrigue, and more conflict is always a good way to go; I'd be surprised if they didn't go there at some point.
I'm not convinced that The FreeStar Collective represents EITHER a group of rebels or a group of revolutionaries. Unless I've missed information or have forgotten a source, I take The Colony War to simply be a war between rival factions who are all colonial. In other words, the Settled Systems is a collection of star systems colonized by humans. That's different than saying that The Colony War is a war between the United Colonies and ITS colonies.
In the days of the Daggerfield beta Bethesda got a lot of their lore from suggestions from Beta Testers. Even the gods are named after devs and beta testers. This led to a weird situation where fans started writing fan fiction they declared was canon and got mad when Bethesda contradicted this. Then you got Michael Kirkbride who despite being a bethesda writer at one point, hasn't been for ages and has a weird clique where he defines what is canon in this weird fan fiction version of Elder Scrolls lore. What I don't want to see with Starfield is people deciding their fanfiction is canon and then getting mad at Bethesda when they contradict it. Speculation is fine though. Just don't get too attached to it.
Information about the Russian localization of Starfield has been removed from the Steam page. There was no voice acting, only subtitles and an interface in Russian. And this is on the day of cosmonautics, on the day of the first flight of Yuri Gagarin into space, the first man in space. Didn't expect this from them...
I clicked the pop up for the first video and it just disappeared without loading the other video. I rewound it and tried a couple more times but the same thing happened. I'll just look it up manually and watch it first but thought I'd mention it in case someone knows what's wrong. I'm using the Android UA-cam app at the moment. Edit: oops, I already watched that video lol 😛
I would actually like it if the rebels where just that, just angry people rebelling. I'm tired of them always being the good guy fighting against the oppression of a government because that government is EVIL, or so we are told, that least. Edit actually, after hearing they were founded just a few years after the other major faction, I'm not convinced they are/were rebelling, just independent colonies that rallied under a different banner, not unlike the history of Battletech, where aside from the official colonies being made by the government, hundreds of other people spread out farther and settled worlds, only to slowly start forming coalitions to fight each other (and Earth.)
Given I feel very optimistic indeed about Starfield I don't want to be the harbinger of doom, but the factions in Starfield are severely uninspiring. What that dude was writing on the screen about the Crimson Fleet was the kind of elementary stuff I'd expect a 16-year old to bop out, lol. No insult to 16-year olds of course :D Why the hell would pirates all fly the same banner given the consequence is that it puts them all at more risk, and especially at risk of more serious punishment if caught/prosecuted? No no no, this is just amateurish in the extreme... So we've got the Freestar Collective (libertarian cowboys), the United Colonies (possibly on the verge of imperialism), Constellation (scientists/explorers), the Crimson Fleet (pirates), and Ryujin Industries (some megacorp). Skyrim had more joinable factions!! I hope to God there are hundreds more factions we can't join (yet), otherwise this is all going to start feeling somewhat limited. It'd be a shame if Bethesda pulled out all the stops on performance, environment, ship/base-building capabilities, etc, yet dropped the ball on the politics and potential complexity of factions. We will see I guess, but what that dude was writing about the Crimson Fleet definitely does not inspire confidence :p
The weird thing about this game. The United Colonies: A group of power hungry tyrants, reminiscent of the US Republicans. The Freestar Collective: A group of heavily armed outlaws, reminiscent of the US Republicans. At first I wondered how does this work? Then I realised the Republicans do have a lot of infighting, so it makes more sense.

No matter what, any group that styles themselves after any form of Communists will always be the worst of the worst. The one faction I never plan on joining, if they are what I think they are. I'll take the outright pirates before them, lol.
What I really can't fathom, is how something that calls itself a collective is supposed to be all about individuality. Those are polar opposite concepts.
Wouldn't Freestar Collective be more libertarian? They have a space anarcho capitalist vibe based on the concept arts in this video and the Freestar Collective is described as an alliance of small independent village outpost(s) that came together to stop an Imperial Government based on what this guy said. (Ideological, Economical, or Imperialistic reasons)
@@bretts8070 I see what you’re thinking about a red star being a communist ideology but there’s not a distinctive “red star” in the logo for free star collective. Just a bird and a few pics with a red flag. I’d say they’re most likely not communist

The colony wars and the style of both sides of the conflicted remind me of the civil war in the tv show firefly wonder if it was inspiration
That intro animation with the channel/constellation logo is amazing. The editing in this video is on point
