I'm on 236, hoping to get 245 when i re-take my FTP next month
Nice!! Good work Ryan. Don't stress the race podiums. Every cat bump is a huge hurdle to get over. I was cat D for about a month, never won a race and maybe got a podium twice. Cat C came around and by the time I was hitting top ten finishes I got bumped to B. Now with a 3.8w/kg 20min power I'm lucky to finish in the top 3rd of a race. It is what it is.
Ahhh fella that was a great video!!! Congrats on the official promotion to Cat C. Keep it up because like me, stagnation = demotion. Ps, I said to a mate of mine “I know someone who would like this” when we were at AC/DC at Wembley last month 😂🤘🏻

Nice job! Welcome to Cat C! I know it’s hard but you’ll be fine. It still gets in my head when I don’t win either. I’ll be racing in September cuz where I live it’s 35+ degrees during peek hours. Trying the FTP building me up training program or another base building zwift program. I know they can be boring at times but you’ll see gains each month in your ability to stay with the lead group in races.
I just got to cat c and I’m in the same situation. I’m motivated to keep getting better. It make me happy that I usually finish at least a minute faster than the first place cat D.
Great video Ryan! Well worth the wait. That are some serious numbers on the grade. Makes me wanna hit the bike and give it ago once more. That's bringing inspiration. Great tactics! Cheers mate
Been loving your videos. Keep up the good work! I'm looking to pick up a Zwift Ride myself soon 👍 (so this will probably be my last message due to me having a heart attack) But thanks for the inspiration though! (Even tho technically you probably murdered me) Much love 🙂
I have won Cat C races and never have had a W/KG above 3.0. I think 2.9 has been my best ever, but I have won with 2.7. I am pure sprinter tho, so if I can manage to stay in the pack till the finish, they are done for!
@@FoobsTon No, short races would mean I need a high w/kg again which I don't have. My 5 minute power is awfull, my 15s power very good. So indeed, longer flat courses where I can draft my a$$ off are great for me. I raced ZRL only 1 season, then I raced DRS for now 4 seasons. DRS is much better, category wise and I think it looks like what zwift tries to implement, but have not looked into it enough
Got promoted from C to B and never won a C race - not even close. I think my best was 15th place. A lot of races favor bigger guys with huge engines - flat races are won with pure Watts not W/kg. Weight doesn't matter or at least didn't in most races I have done in the winter season.
Congrats on your promotion, now find a better course/race for your abilities. Sometimes the chasing group catches back to the front in C's (with a bit of team work). Especially with heavier riders that don't have the high w/kg on the punchy climbs. Really enjoy your videos and following your journey 💪💪
Hi Ryan. I experience issues with connection when I'm connected via Android phone. When I connect directly, everything runs smoothly. Edit: the issues started a few weeks back. I hope Zwift sort out this before the season starts.
Thanks for letting me know. I am connected directly to my mac. No idea why it does it. Doesnt happen every race, just occasionally. Ive seen it get worse recently like you i hope they work out the cause and fix it.
I disabled the Bluetooth in my Zwift companion app (if you use it) which helped me minimize drops since I as well connect directly to my PC VIA BLUETOOTH and ANT+
Zwift racing is a bit meh for me, both normal cats and racing scores. I actually think normal cat racing is better (for me). With racing scores there's always crazy cat B's that most the pack would struggle to close the gap on. They should take into account finishing positions way more. I'm cat C and whilst I can hold on for a bit, I always get dropped on climbs (I'm tall/heavy)...and most the time I finish towards the back. For some reason my racing score is 439, and I don't even recall getting a top 5 in cat D before I got promoted a few months back.
i just started doing races and trying, i like the points better than category. 1 of the cat d races i did the top 3 all put out more than 3.3w/kg and are still listed as cat d, i have no expectations of winning, at my heaviest i was 409lbs and smoked 2 packs per day for way to many years. i just want to be competitive and feel like i have a chance even if i dont because i try harder so the points should give a smoother transition.
Funny, I often find myself on the floor next to my bike after a Zwift race or hard workout. Have you considered trying the Saturday Tiny Races?Almost guaranteed for you to end up on the floor after all 4 races perhaps even between races.
My Wattbike has the same dropout issue, not often but drops out and changes to gear 6, so I spin like mad and try to shift back to standard gear I use. It’s annoying when it happens
I was winning D got moved to C. Like you said tactic went out the window and it was just struggling to hang on. In C category I usually finish mid pack. At 98.6kg first significant climb I struggle to stay with lead group
If you spend a winter in upping your cadence to around 95rpm with long endurance Z2 rides, you'll then be able to maintain threshold with leg cadence and not pure leg strength
This. You need to work on aerobic capacity. Your cadence is too low (where I used to be). Now I keep it 80-90s and ride 100mi/160km at 17mi/27km/hr like a stroll in the park.
All the time, I love climbing ADZ but im going to wait until im alot lighter as im currently looking at at least 18 hours for a max effort full everest.
I've got an idea for you Ryan. I am also Ryan. Anyway, I think you should train up and come do Unbound 200 with me next year. It's a 200 mile gravel race.
It starts and ends in Emporia KS, USA. I only finished one out of nine trys. Took me 20hrs and 5 minutes. But I think I'm faster and stronger because of Zwift. So I think I can finish again. It's no picnic.
@@uncledudley1928 wow, getting there I think would be harder for me than the ride itself. Thanks for the offer though. I wish you good luck in your training for it.
Not a great racer - I’m barely cat C so take my advice with a level of scepticism. So IMHO - I don’t enter short races. In these races people with a higher FTP (most of them) simply leave me in the dust. I find that if I enter a long race - 50k or more then yes there are people that blast off in the distance - they are the elite racers (relative to me). But most people when faced with a long race will dial it back so if you tuck into a groupetto (sp?) and keep your watts down, you can keep your position and then as you get close to the finish you can start to ramp up and push harder. I train primarily for endurance not power so that is my strategy.
Where do we stand ( if you pardon the pun) on an FTP test must be carried out sitting? Doesn't make any sense to me but Zwift likes to insist on it i believe.
I think you have plenty power to be strong on flat races. You just need more awareness of your efforts and a higher aerobic engine. You could just abandon climby/punchy races and focus solely on practically pan flat races where raw power matters. Just my opinion.

@RyanCondon sorry, let me be more specific. Please don't push yourself to the limit everyday. Your body will improve for 2 to 3 weeks then start putting the breaks on. Do 2 high intensity sessions a week max and fill the rest with low aerobic and weight/resistance training.
im 97.5 Kg with a 3.25ftp. I race in the 450-575 (559 Zscore) which is Cat C you're still racing in Cat D bud. which is no problem but keep it honest and say you're racing Cat D. 302 is no where near Cat C.
Zwift Racing Score and Category Enforcement are completely different things. ZRS is dynamic, and event organisers can and will change the banding as they see fit per event. Zwift have already changed the banding for August's ZRacing. CE is fixed with defined thresholds. Ryan's ZRS is whatever it currently is, but that will change from race to race.
