It certainly opened things up and looks nice. Keep the old wooden parts they are so ornamental and can be used for other projects to give it a traditional look. Great video.👍♥️
The new railings do look nice, but personally i prefer the old railing, it matched better with the actual stairs. Buuuuut not my house so if you like it you do it :)
You give a lot of detail and great info… one thing I often wonder as a DIYer is how much something like this cost? Many of the folks I follow never give that kind of info. Even a ball park price would be great…
I saw them install that kind of system on an episode of Ask This Old House and fell in love with it. If i have an opportunity to actually own a house that has a wrap around porch that is going on it.
Great Job April again. I watched you from when you first started on here and told you you are a great carpenter. You have gotten better and better every time. Happy New Year to you and your family. Keep up the great work. Take Care April
I can not thank you enough. I am doing a full home remodel and my stair railing I wanted the cable look but had no clue what to get or my first steps. Your video was one of the best DIY videos I have ever seen. And I am now buying from Viewrail for my new look. THANK YOU!!
Would you be able to share the price for the system you installed? Just want to get a ballpark sense of the cost associated with using a system like this. Thanks!
April, your work is impressive but, I agree with the other viewers, the wooden railing was beautiful. Maybe a new coat of stain and poly would have done the trick!
It looks phenomenal, but my issue with it is the fact that most insurance (at least, where I live in the region of Quebec, Canada) wouldn't pay if something happened as it is considered a "ladder", so a child could climb up on top of each "ropes" and fall down...
This looks super interesting. Could you please tell me how much it would be to build something exactly the same size with this particular pattern. And then would double the size just be twice as much?
Rubber mallet? Wasn't that a dead blow hammer? This came out awesome! Love seeing you using eye and ear protection, so many people totally neglect this!
we liked The modern railings after until we saw our children climb on them! Within 1 week of moving in to our new home, we spent $$$ to demolish the whole railing and changed it to the traditional vertical one!
WOW! What a difference this new railing made to your home April! I like how this space seems more open now. I also like the industrial vibe. Great Job!!! 👏👍😃
@@LiqdPT and the old style draws kids because it’s a challenge. I didn’t take my railing off because I was worried about them falling I just didn’t want them ruining the railing. They’ve already taken many headers down the steps. We live on a farm where there are far greater risk then a falling down the steps. I guess that’s why I find it silly when people worry about such things.
What about the railing down the stairwell? Building inspectors here would have a heart attack and never approve an occupancy permit unless it is in. Is there a solution?
That horizontal rail should be illegal, any adventurous child can be up and over in a flash. Plus it is a choke hazard if they get caught in it headfirst and dangling. Personally l preferred what was there prior. Nice job, it does look nice.
I'm kind of surprised that the horizontal cables are even allowed. They basically provide a ladder so a little kid can climb up and launch themselves over the top. Those rails aren't to my taste but it's your house so if you like them that's what counts. Regardless, nice job on the installation. By the way, I'm old so my taste runs more toward the railing that you removed. 🙂
I'm with you, Gene. When April started to cut that beautiful, wooden rail......I felt like quoting Fred Sanford and screaming, "It's the big one, Elizabeth!" because I was sure that a major heart attack was sure to follow! Of course as you mentioned, it's April's house and she certainly should decorate and equip it according to her own tastes. I also enjoyed the video. I always do. I was just glad that it was her house, not mine. Thanks for the video, April. You're the best.
True - would't be allowed in Germany...(well, would be, if the height is small enough, noone would get hurt) but at that height - it would NOT. Take care of your Kids
@@pteddie6965 Same here....I cringed when the first post was being cut. I like the look of the new railing but outside rather than indoors, or maybe in a more industrial indoor setting, like a city loft for example.
I think AW and the Universe have a different definition of "easy". :) Another gem, but dang, sure liked that old one too.

I CAN'T say that I agree. The new cables are bussin'.
Sometimes it's better to say things in your head and not share.

View Rail is a nice option for a handrail! It looks great. You make it look simple April. Thanks for sharing another project. Keep on building!
Thank you very much!
Nice, but like some other comments below, I too liked the old one

I was literally thinking about doing something very similar in my house a couple of weeks ago. Timely video, looks easy enough to tackle on my own!
Glad it was helpful!

April this railing system is beautiful, and I'm an old school farmhouse kind of guy. 👍
I’m think wood posts and barbed wire for the rustic approach.
Visual effects! You've gone a long way since building that trash can corral several years ago.

Check out Cable Bullet. I LOVE them for wire rail systems.

it's nice but not kid friendly, they can climbe-it and fall on the other side
How is it holding up, specifically the one on the corner by the stairs? Is it loose? (Wiggling)
It's as sturdy as the date I installed it. No wiggling at all. Thanks for watching.
How far did you overhang the base plate/trim on the inside of the staircase? Thanks!
Very cool. The setup for these on the commercial property looks awesome weaving through the trees like a tree house.

Yea cause they certainly won’t climb the other railing. 😂😂
