  • This is an introduction to the first edition collection I've recently started. Books include several by Chris Van Allsburg (Polar Express, Garden of Abdul Gasazi, Mysteries of Harris Burdick), Ellen Raskin's The Westing Game, James Howe's Bunnicula, and almost everything Jon Klassen has illustrated so far.
I go over what made me start a collection, how much I paid for each book, and some details about some of the books.
I plan on collecting all Caldecott and Newbery winners and will post more videos as the collection expands.

Thank you for sharing this video, both parts one one and two. The world needs more book collectors. And not just speculators, those who treat book collecting like buying stocks, with the hope they will grow in value, but collecting what you love. Keep it up!

I have to wonder why Aiden Hartley's 'Zanzibar's Chest' is your favourite book, apart from the fact that it is mind-blowing!? It's a bit of a rarefied subject area.

I was a regular watcher of C-SPAN2 BookTV for many years, and Aidan Hartley did a reading and Q&A about the book on it. Also it was one of the books of the year in The Economist that year. It seemed interesting so I picked it up.

@@basehead617 One has to appreciate his candour amongst others: '...sooner or later a foreigner had to form a view about the savagery of the Somalis. Were they victims, or were they to blame for their own fate? Most of the foreign correspondents concluded the Somalis were despicable for what they had done to themselves...[but then again, and of course], Dan was different...he always treated people decently...' And, 'They showed off what devout muslims they were if anybody was watching, but when out of view of their neighbours, would happily share my salami sandwich, drink beer and debauch themselves with as many women as they could lay their hands on.' And then of course there was Aydiid. And there was also the often too comic incidents of violence, re-the Somali airforce for example!
'Dad chuckled and gently waved me away. He was a doer rather than a writer. Well into his eighties he threw himself into his work with the physical vigour of a man four decades younger, trekking off into the bush for weeks at a time. I picture him in his straw hat, sitting with a circle of rheumy-eyed old warriors under an acacia tree, transfixed by a debate on cattle and rain, while a pot of tea brews on the campfire. Some of what he did endured but most of it withered or was swept aside or destroyed by politics.'
Thus not exactly what one would call trendy. But we are a group-based species. But nonetheless, a proper bit of lead is always about right sooner or later. The majority of people are not really malleable and overawed monkeys after all.

I love seeing videos like this. The beginning of your first major book collection is a truly special thing. I myself am a major book collector so I'd love to give you a few pointers if you'd like. I'd tell you the most cost effective way of getting the books that you want outside of the usual online businesses and a number of other things. It'd be my pleasure.
    Cheers.

+RobotWookiee I always appreciate any tips! I've learned a lot since this video and I am spending less. I've even found a few good quality copies of Caldecott winners on Etsy if you can believe it. What do you collect primarily?
