Very Easy and Simple Change and Inspect Spark Plugs [Ducati Monster]

  • In this "How To" video I show the process of changing old NGK Spark Plugs to new ones on a Ducati Monsters. I highly recommend this to anyone that's motivated, interested in saving money and have a small working space. Here's what you're going to need, 2 NGK Spark Plugs, Anti Seize Lubricant, Torque Wrench, Service Manual, Spark Plug Gap Gauge, Socket Wrench and a Spark Plug socket. Please keep in mind that this is a loose guide and it’s up to you to research and use common sense when you're working on your motorcycle. If by any chance, you're uncertain about something, reach out to your dealership/mechanic for advice or do some research.     You don't use anti seize lube on spark plugs, it interferes with torque settings. Only need dielectric grease on coil.

      this, or use anti-seize and drop your torque spec by 20-30%

    Wow, those plugs were easy to get at. The only 90 degree v twin I owned was a Suzuki SV 1000. You had to remove the tank and the air box to get at the back plug!

    As a rule of thumb, it’s always a great idea to put a tiny bit of dielectric grease in the boot before you reassemble.

      It might be a bit tougher to get to your spark plugs but it's all the same/similar process. Loosely use this vid and your service manual to complete yours and you should be fine. :)

    super easy on a 796 Ducati. I changed them in a R6 and the placement of the spark plugs are deep in there, you have to take the whole thing apart almost!

    Great video, wondering if permatex copper grease is ok instead of the lubricant you used? Also, what torque specs do you use? I have a Scrambler and the manual just says "must be securely tightened". There's also no mention about gap measurement in the Scrambler workshop manual? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

      You would definitely change your spark plugs or your bike will not run right. That initial spark gets the bike rolling.

      @@ClutchFirst recently I feel my bike sometimes will not accelerate right, sometimes it just shut off the engine and appear “engine” symbol on the screen. Spark plug might be the reason.

    Forgive the noob question but how often do you recommend changing them.
    At around what mileage?

      OCR_MIG ! It’s actually a good question. I’d recommend checking your specific bike service manual for when you should replace yours. If I were to take a guess, for your FZ09 it would be every 8k miles. I tend to do mine for every major service.

      The standard, copper ones are rated 10~20k miles
      Iridium/platinum are rated 30+k miles
      I wanted to test it on my GSR750 and did a change after 17k miles (recommended 8k). Bike was on a dyno before/after change. No changes in engine work whatsoever with new sparks.
      As a standard my bike came with platinum plugs and there was only slight discoloration on them even though it's not babied around. I've done 20+ track days on it in last 5 months. Just for giggles we tried mixing new/old plugs. No difference at all. We've put the old ones back in and will do another check at 25k miles.
      I think it all comes down to what quality fuel you have in your area. I always get 102, in USA it's equivalent to 95 i believe.

      SickPrid3 I have to agree with you. Very rarely do you see a different in performance with better Spark Plugs. Typically 8k Miles is the ideal time to swap them out and would never go over 24k even with the iridium ones. I also run the highest grade fuel on my bike.

      That's that naked bike life! Simple quick and easy to work on. It's not all glamorous, there are some set backs though. hmmmm, maybe I should do a vid about the pros and cons. 🤔
