  • From medieval times to the 1800s, the Barbary Pirates hailing from the coasts of North Africa were the terror of the Mediterranean world, the great scourge that all Christian Europeans on the sea feared. This video will be about these pirates, showing just how much of a threat they were, but also how complex they were as well as just describing the Barbary Pirates only as pirates would be a great disservice to the rich history surrounding them.

Nice vid. It's interesting to imagine how different the world might be if the Barbary Pirates had managed to establish a presence in the Americas.

Yes, that would have certainly been an interesting bit of alternative history, that is for sure. Spoiler: I actually have some video ideas connected to this for the future.

There would have been more Islamic people that's all. If they prevailed than USA would have Muslim lifestyle.. I guess USA wasn't so evil after all.

I think this is one of the major reasons for the mixed demographics of the Algerian coast.
There are Algerians with Blonde hair, fair skin and blue eyes. While yes, the Germanic Vandals might have had an influence on these North African genes, it is far more likely that the gene pool of the millions of enslaved Europeans significantly affected the demographics of the region.

Yes, that is possible and even likely, though you also have the times with Roman contacts that involved large parts of Europe, with people from for example northern Gaul and the British isles moving down to north Africa as well, and you could potentially have local genetic variety too (blondness and other features have appeared separately at times and Europeans actually have a large shared genetic substrate with north africans). But yes, I believe a lot of it comes from the Barbary raids.

8:05 Is one of the greatest "what ifs' in history.
If the Moroccans had allied with the Ottomans against Spain, then it is possible that we might have seen Ottoman colonies in the new world like in Brazil (or at least conflicts over the new world and raids against Spanish & Portugese gold ships).
    A chilling thought.

That would have been a very different world (though very unlikely due to a variety of reasons), with the Ottomans dominating like that. Though the Wattasid & Sa'di sultanates in Morocco did do attempts at colonialism and attacks on Spanish and Portuguese holdings in the new world. They just did not succeed due to various reasons.

Pair that with the Omanis (and Gujaratis) successfully challenging the Portuguese in the Indian Ocean like in our timeline, and it's entirely possible that Europe's colonial ambitions would have ended right there. Especially if Muslims adopted European navy technology, like the Islamic Gunpowder Empires adopted gunpowder.

The seafarers had a unique position.
When they had goods, they were willing to be merchants.
But when they had no goods, they became pirates. This was because they had to obtain goods.
With the goods they obtained, they traveled the entire Mediterranean Sea.
Among these goods were plundered goods, but also captured slaves. Slaves were the core of the Islamic economic structure, where there were few independent farmers.

Yes, indeed the line of difference between a merchant ship and a pirate of opportunity was blurry! And slaves did play an important part in the agricultural economy of North Africa.

@@spongebakesquarepansgaming I saw that your comment did happen to end up in the spam-filter, as I am pro-free speech I will allow your comment despite its rather rather offensive word usage, which I am going to ignore and instead rather point out the historical fact that it went both ways, and Europeans very much also took slaves from the north African coast in raids too, even if usually not to the same degree. No one was clean back then in regards to slavery and doing raids along the coasts of the sea.

At times? They raided the UK, Ireland, Iceland. Had a base on an island off UK coast. They took thousands of white slaves. Left hundreds of fishing boats adrift. Capturing crews.

    • @theculturedjinni
      @theculturedjinni  4 місяці тому

Indeed they did do many raids up there as well, and as I showed in the video it was several hundreds to thousands that they took in raids and the total numbers numbered in the millions.
