Watching this after hearing the news of Roger's retirement, his game , his grace, what he taught us all as fans...no one else as an athletic idol comes close. This is an awesome memento and speaking from Fed/Nadal regarding a legendary "poem".
I remember when this was first aired before the final. A really, really beautiful poem. If only more people could understand the meaning behind it - and truely appreciate this for what it is = a masterpiece.
Two of the greatest athletes and rivalries of our time, reciting one of the most powerful poems ever written that ever so precisely and eloquently define character of an ideal being. Absolute poetry.
I remember this before the 2008 final, it was an amazing and emotional build up to the greatest match I've seen! I'm a Rafa fan, so I nearly thought the match was lost...Oh the drama. I've grown to appreciate Roger as I've grown older. 😁
i remember this so well. they played this during the rain break. nadal was 2 sets to love up. the match returned shortly after this peom reading and federer came back and made it two sets all when nadal had championship points in the tie breaker. it really felt like that poem had changed the tide for federer. the amount of pressure these two were under in probably the greatest final in history just makes you believe every world they are saying even more. This makes this poem read by these two guys so powerful.
Listening to this today on Roger's retirement and seeing Rafa absolutely shattered seeing his oldest Rival and opponent gone.... 💔 Fedal is pure friendship, Fedal is pure competitiveness, Fedal is pure emotion, Fedal is pure Joy.... Fedal is tennis for me and the part which brought joy to me is done. 😭
I am completely speechless this has been the most motivating and inspirational video i have been exposed in my life. Thanks Roger again you prove to be a great man.
Great poem but they cut out probably my favourite verse. If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss, And lose, and start again at your beginnings And never breathe a word about your loss; If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone, And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’
@ Andrew Davison , a friend of mine never got this poem because of the first two lines here " risk it on one turn of pitch and toss" . He just says it's a stupid line and stupid risk.He has a point, I think I thought the same thing the first time I saw it, but I guess it's not literal , its poetic, like Rafa or Nadal risking in a match or similar.Anyway I've tried to explain it to him on and off for 20 years but he never got the poem and sadly in some way became a lesser person because of that ... how can you explain it?
@@joachimmcdonnagh It means to give everything you have in your next objective, even if it means you lose everything. Nadal's is a symbol of that, specially when he risks an injury and plays his 100%.
@Alexander Kings yeah , that's a good way of interpreting it. It's so weird man , that friend I referred to is actually getting married this week. I won't be there because we fell out even though we were quite good friends. If only he understood Kipling .
i just love this two MENS. I'm so happy and proud to be born in their time, to think that we are in the same planet, that we are humans just the same....
one of the greatest poems and seeing those words as you walk out onto center court must inspire them beyond belief. Nadal does his best at reading, his English isn't perfect but even English people don't get much right these days. (Including me) Give the guy a break and focus on what they are saying. Beautiful poem read by two of the greatest players of the most beautiful sport on the earth. :)
I think athletic endurance shows mental strength as well. these two are incredible athletes, extraordinary people. I think the poem applies particularly well.
Thanks for uploading! I've been trying to find this video everywhere. It is very seldom that a poem is read by someone who seems to truly comprehend its meaning. But when it occurs, it really reaches into the soul.
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two impostors just the same.. If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with Kings-nor lose the common touch, If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you, If all men count with you, but none too much: If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run, Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it, And-which is more-you’ll be a Man, my son!
wow...this honestly wells up my eyes with tears it is just so beautiful and moving... to see it read by 2 true champions and such gentleman at that...awesome...
I cannot express how much I love his video, it is truly beautiful and thought provoking. Federer's English is superb and I find his voice so soothing. Such a tough final and this video gets me teary eyed every time, much respect to Nadal though, he played fantastically. I could listen to this all day and the music is beautiful. Thank you so much for uploading :)
I you take this into the context that Kipling wrote this for his 11 year old son it still fits these 2 great champions. Nadal's face says it all when he is sitting down watching Roger hold the cup but he had his revenge. This is one of my favourite poems.
I thought the neighbors were going to call the cops on my brother and I when we were watching their wimbledon final this year. We were yelling so loud cheering for roger when he won the third set and also on that backhand down the line he hit on championship point in the fourth. Best match I've seen
I love this, so beautifully read. I can't watch it without tears... Especially when Rafa is reading, soooo sweet :-D Kipling's poem is made for this final!
It's so inspiring! The meaning flows from the eyes of Nadal. He is the true "MAN" in this lovely poem. He won, and kept winning until his achievements came to be the best. He never finishes a point, but wins it with pure class. I would love to compares Nadal and Federer and try to prove Nadal is a way better player...but I won't. It's something God has privileged Nadal with, and he himself will prove what all us Nadal lovers want to say. He doesn't only define victory, but the purity in it!
I cant even imagine what Roger felt when he lost. Of course i think he is devastated, but he is too much Champion so he will recover soon. Roger is THE BEST... winning or losing... he is always THE KING...
"If"! -- a childhood favorite! (And I guess, what eventually formed my girlhood template of "The Man for me" :->) It helps too that Federer and Nadal are such goodlooking, sexy readers :-) Bravo!
wow...I thought that poem wasn't well known and that I was amongst the few that followed it. It is quite inspirational. Federer reads it quite beautifully. I was laughing my ass off when I heard nadal read it. He sounds like someone is forcing him to read it. Like he has a gun to his head.hahahaha. But they are both legends. Federer is much greater in my eyes though. Nadal is just a beast and runs down every ball. Federer has true grace, precision, and talent.
This is probably one of the most inspirational poems ever written and anyone who says it is stupid or rubbish is an illiterate fool who has no concept of what is motivational or inspiring! All the great tennis players all say seeing the line above the doors that you walk through at Wimbledon to the Centre Court those words are inspiring and so true of the beautiful game of tennis!
Favorite line of the poem:
"If you can meet with triumph and disaster and treat those two impostors just the same"
their accents and pauses makes this soo much better.

I feel you. It changed my life all those years ago
Their matches at Wimbledon are legendary. Now that Roger's retiring, we just have the memories.

+Stuart Alexander you were lucky to have lived those beautiful moments!

This suits Nadal so well. Amazing poem.

Yeah that's sad

All time. 2best players ..rojer and rafa...love u those
An exceedingly good poem...
Federers voice and accent are so soothing, its touching me,and the words he tells...he is the greatest sportsman ever!
Go Roger, may glory be with you!
in my life there are thre hero's
my father,my mother and
Roger Federer
i just love this two MENS.
I'm so happy and proud to be born in their time, to think that we are in the same planet, that we are humans just the same....

This poem gives me more goosebumps giving up to the Final they put on...
Well played to Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal for a great final
awhhhh, I love you Roger
4 years on from the best match of tennis I have ever seen. This video still gives me Goosebumps.
I think athletic endurance shows mental strength as well. these two are incredible athletes, extraordinary people. I think the poem applies particularly well.
stunning
I just love this poem especially read by these two men. Its a really moving piece and especially when federer reads it
God, that was beautiful brought a tear to my eye.
a testament to the enduring beauty of the english language. And to the spirit of man.
this is such a beautiful video for an epic poem.
Roger and Rafael. two of the best athletes on earth.
11 years later and it's happening again.
Their last match ever
Oh God, Roger's voice!!! :')
Thanks for uploading! I've been trying to find this video everywhere. It is very seldom that a poem is read by someone who seems to truly comprehend its meaning. But when it occurs, it really reaches into the soul.
Spectacular! Especially against the Wibmledon background, the greatest tournament ever.

This is great, love Roger's voice, he is so elegant :)
I agree so much. Both of these men are incredibly classy and awesome, and the poem's friggin' sweet.

i love this poem. hearing rafa and rog's voices made it even better.
Rafael nadal and Roger federer all time favourite.
this will never be forgotten
amen.
Beautiful... cant say anything.. its just a beautiful poe. I love Federer's voice.
Of all great champions, Nadal apparently carries that in his heart better than any other players I know.
Vamos Rafa!!!!!!!!!!!!
I you take this into the context that Kipling wrote this for his 11 year old son it still fits these 2 great champions. Nadal's face says it all when he is sitting down watching Roger hold the cup but he had his revenge. This is one of my favourite poems.
The poem seems to represent each of them perfectly. I guess that's why they're champions.
This is from the soundtrack of "Elizabeth, the golden age" and, yes, it's beautiful :)
That man was indeed wise. Thanks for spreading the knowledge.
I thought the neighbors were going to call the cops on my brother and I when we were watching their wimbledon final this year.

Kipling's poem is made for this final!
This poem suits both of them perfectly!
I've heard other versions, but damn Roger says that last line well.
It would put a tear in my eye if he says it to his son (if he gets one)
I hope that they both reach the final again and we have a magical match like we did in 2008!
Very fitting for Federer to read this. Compliments to Nadal too:)
Reciting poetry and playing tennis both takes balls - kudos to both players!

Goosebumps...
Beautiful.
Thank you kindly for sharing this. It's beautiful.
they are so amazing...
Federer and Nadal read this poem because they truly understand what it means to represent it
As a wise man once said, "All words are cheap, but our actions and the impact they have around us are the things that really matter."
I can't count the number of times I have watched this video just to listen to this music
love this by 2 great tennis players
Inspirational words spoken by inspirational men
they really touch me...
that was really beautiful :) inspiring inspiring words.
oh how nice!!! I adore the verse and the players!!
breathtakingly beautiful!!!
If Rudyard .....still in 2019
Two great of the best tennis players of all time ever!❤
I usually hate poetry, but I love this poem.
It Rocks
This is so powerful...
I cant even imagine what Roger felt when he lost. Of course i think he is devastated, but he is too much Champion so he will recover soon.
Roger is THE BEST... winning or losing... he is always THE KING...
Alright, I agree on the negotiation.
Happy New Years to you too.
roger federer is my idol i would love to see him play at wimbledon!
how could you dislike this you are not human!
i first heard this yesterday at school and i thought one of them really couldn't speak english but then that kinda goes along with the poem.
And then Nadal says:"if if if... Doesn't exist".
aw that was really deep. Rafa and his english is so adorable. Beautiful though. =']
"If"! -- a childhood favorite! (And I guess, what eventually formed my girlhood template of "The Man for me" :->) It helps too that Federer and Nadal are such goodlooking, sexy readers :-) Bravo!
I cried watching this...
Sooooooooo beautiful........
That was beautiful.
Loved this, loved this poem anyway but these two put real soul in to it. Especially Federer as his English is better.
Really excellent and inspiring, seems so similar to the Bhagavad-gita
Roger is reading it beautiful.....
the background music its from Elizabeth: The Golden Age Soundtrack, its called "Destiny Theme" i think.
Rafa's exquisitely beautiful, powerful, artistic hands. :42
wow...I thought that poem wasn't well known and that I was amongst the few that followed it. It is quite inspirational. Federer reads it quite beautifully. 2:09 what a beautiful smile! Love u Rog :)
i love Ping Pong now..those 2 are legends
Nice. Love this two guys!!!
PS. Rafa improved his english in the last few months, i think when he was injured:P
Of course it is. Roger speaks English fluently, as his mom is from South Aftica, and Nadal is from Spain. I think Nadal's accent is pretty awesome!
Beautiful.....
I think it was red Stalin that made a 2008 video with this at the end and it was my favorite tennis video until it had a copyright takedown :(
...so what happened to verse three? ...and shorten verse two? Otherwise great.
i think the following saying well and truly applies in the current situation.
never critisize a man until you have walked a mile in his shoes.
Beautiful
I guess they cut out a bit didnt they cuz this poem is supposed to be a little longer
amen.
