    I am just laughing at those people who think people flashing an expensive bag or car are rich! Also: I agree with another commenter on here; buying only designer label is a sign of insecurity! But it is truly sad that many have this issue, especially given the strenuous work culture you described in another recent video, with many having panic attacks.

    Where I live there are A LOT of millionaires and a few billionaires. Some are self made and some are old money. Anyhow you would need to try hard to pick them out of a crowd (well not the famous billionaires). They typically dress in regular brands, maybe some expensive watches or purse, and usually dressed casually. They eat high end or mid end restaurants. Sometimes the giveaway is the car but almost always it’s just a higher end car that’s not super expensive. The houses though are almost always mansions. My point is that it’s crazy that people who have to work to earn money tend to spend more than the truly wealthy.

    Why do people try to impress people who are going to snub their nose at them anyway? If the rich themselves lost everything in a minute, they themselves would be snubbed by their so-called friends. So look for quality friends not fake ones.

    Obsession with luxury goods in Korea is pretty strange for someone living abroad. In USA I feel nobody cares if you driving a cheap car or expensive car. Nobody will be impressed much because you are driving a super expensive car, or have a handbag worth several thousand $$$$, but I guess those things really matter in Korea. Perhaps many Koreans have incredible sense of insecurity in an intensively competitive society so they need boost their ego and to show that they are an elite member of the society. I visit my relatives in Korea and one thing that's really hard to get in Korea is a nice home in a quiet neighborhood. Nearly everyone has to live in a high rise residential towers (which can be very expensive in areas like kang-nam) which doesn't really feel like one's own home.

    On one hand I understand, it's nice to be able to show off with a bag/clothes or even your kids, but it's actually deeply sad that you have to get your self-image/ worth from that. The saddest thing is that you know that even if you win this match (the other is impressed) the feeling is very superficial and will soon disappear. it is not satisfying. it is constant comparison with each other. Is no wonder peopel get stressed. Is a "fata morgana" (delusion).

    I have noticed that Koreans wear good quality clothes that are, obviously from expensive brands . I understand you say that even though people do not have so much money they still buy those in order to , maybe, show off. That is the bad part. Looking down on people because they do not have luxury stuff. Frankly I usually buy clothes that I like and feel good in. I do not care about fashion trends.

    I can say most of people here in Western Europe are not so fond of luxury goods. They had money ex Switzerland but not so showy. Not talking about money . Yes , there’s a lot of luxury cars here . People -They love to travel here. Of course rich people can afford such items but even millionaires are not showy here.

    This culture is also clearly evident in Korean series. The story is often about how it is great to go from poor/ugly to rich/handsome. the handsome doctor that everyone seems to want who is actually the biggest jerk in terms of behavior, but is still nice to her. oh yeah, then there's the scene with a lot of alcohol and someone who has to be taken home, because well, that's the way to get to know each other better + a piggyback ride. because that's just part of it. Oh yeah, are hysterical mothers who hit really a thing in Korea? That's not a normal thing, is it? or?

    It's kind of sad. Because it must be hard for ordinary people to exist within such "culture of constant flex", even since childhood. Chasing continously some artifically created fashions, trends, having to buy things with certain labels - it's just giving profits to the owners of all these so-called luxury brands. While there are so many better ways of spending the money earned. But if everybody around have such expectations and look down on those who don't live up to those expectations, and there's a strong societal pressure regarding such showing off some superficial material wealth, it must be hard for just an individual person to break such vicious circle. Instead of buying expensive clothes or handbags, it makes much more sense for instance to save money in order to buy, or even better build, own house (for me personally also a piece of own garden, some piece of own grass is important), or to be able to travel to various places, to see the world, to find out more about various countries etc.

    • @EF-nb9zg
      @EF-nb9zg Місяць тому

      I agree with you. We teach our daughter to be happy with her life with daily satisfying.she was never interested in luxury things.Teaching her to be prepared for her future. We teaches her that educations and healthy life are more important in our life. During school vacations she worked to earned money ; learning how to budget. Even rich kids are doing the same here.
      At present ,She worked 50% in a month ;More time and travelled with her own family. Invest their own home.
      It’s Ok if we can afford to buy such luxury there’s no wrong to have it; but not boastful attitude.

      @@EF-nb9zg Yes, it's indeed, so important that parents are able to show their children what really matters, what values are truly important, that it shouldn't be only about superficial things. This constant need to fit in can also be attributed to culture which is informed by the constant bombardment from entertainment, and i believe K-drama’s being so very successful imparts an image of extremely well dress men and women in designer fashion. It is only a reflection of this standard or stereotype that propagates down to everyday people who see this constant messaging and mimic that in their own lives. Now whether k-drama’s reflect life, or life reflects what it see’s the end result is Korea career and clothing reflect important cultural & societal norms. We have the same issue with constant bombardment from media towards women on being underweight and thin which cause untold amounts of discomfort disproportionately in our youth, however translates to all age groups. Cheers.

      Cela ne m'inquiéterait pas, mais je m'inquiéterais davantage du taux élevé de suicide en Corée et de la stupide conscience des Coréens, qui est très simple et sans réel goût ni connaissance. Les gens et surtout les pays sans longue tradition de mode, etc. pensent qu'ils achètent quelque chose de beau et d'attrayant en achetant les produits d'une marque, alors que moi et généralement les Français et les Italiens savons trouver leur propre style même sans produits de marque. Il existe de merveilleux marchés aux puces en France où l'on peut trouver de la mode et de belles choses vraiment bon marché pour seulement 3 à 30 euros, mais les Français voient les choses, la mode et les cosmétiques différemment. Trouver votre propre style est aussi un cadeau : ce n'est pas votre propre style si vous achetez des produits ou des cosmétiques de grande marque. Vous aviez raison : la majorité sont généralement des personnes pauvres qui achètent des produits Bärndi. mais pas tous. Je pense que c'est bien que les garçons aient commencé à se maquiller - ce qui se fait ici depuis de nombreuses décennies sans faire de vidéos UA-cam ou tiktok à ce sujet. Ce qui m'inquiéterait, c'est le taux de suicide élevé en Corée et la forte consommation de stéroïdes en Corée, les gars. Quand je regarde habituellement les Coréens, je trouve qu'ils ont l'air un peu clowns - hahaha parce qu'ils manquent de sens du style. Bonne chance.

    I think there is strong commonality between South Korea and the US in consumer spending. Not every family spends the same way, but people seem to buy above their means in both countries, often incurring significant credit card debt.
    You point to something more unique to South Korea: the way people spend on luxury goods to fit in, so they do not look poor, or struggling, or of lower position, in front of their friends and coworkers. In the US, this sort of pressure to fit in is strong in high school and even in middle school, but it fades. In the US, I think more people spend money going out than on luxury goods. Even modest-income families will spend money on appetizers, drinks, and dessert, on top of the main entree. On top of that, with the 15%-20% tip they pay, a meal can get very expensive. Add to this the entertainment they feel they must have (streaming subscription services, attending live sports events, annual vacations), and you can see how little families save for the future.

      I suggest the book "The Millionaire Next Door." The book's key lesson is: “The poor and middle class work for money. The rich make money work for them.” In other words, wealthy people invest in assets-things that generate income and grow in value, like stocks, real estate, and businesses. I read this book in the mid 1990's & was helpful in learning to spend wisely. You can never build wealth by spending on things...most things lose value.
