Royal Enfield Bullet crank, previously rebuilt elsewhere, has terrible runout.

  • I knew this crank had been rebuilt at sometime, because there was a red thread locking compound on the threads of the crankpin nuts' locking screws, which was not factory. This crank is to be lightened, rebalanced and rebuilt to 'Asbo' specs, with a ateel conrod with roller big end.

    It's the new long stroke engine with added 'character'.

    Watching the gap change between the flywheels was pretty stand-out. In my experience, I used a wedge driven into the closing side of the gap to spring it into shape. Bultaco did that at the rebuild shop in Schenectady with a "T" handle tool just for that, just twisted it like a cam However, that was done after the cases were pulled together, they had very tight main bearing clearances for the bearings.
    I wondered how the big-end was made; I'd want the roller rod change for my own if I had one.

    G'day Paul, interesting how the shafts and flywheels loose adjustment, is that down to wear, miss use or something else??, Anyway it's in the right place to be repaired, cheers mate, Neil 🤠.

      Hi Neil, this crank has been rebuilt at some time and not trued up very well. I doubt it became like that during use.

    Please explain ASBRO. Bro ?
    Where do we find specs on runout Paul. Going to attempt a RE Mk1 Interceptor motor build but don’t know where to find these specs. Same question for oil gap. Thanks 🙏🏻

      'Asbo' is a name I gave to my tuned RE Bullets. ua-cam.com/video/_fmtoX_Jj54/v-deo.html
      I think a manual, which will be available from Hitchcocks will contain all the info you need for your Interceptor.

    I have a question if you can help me out that would be great . Does the valve ,valve guides and rocker arm assembly are the same for both 500cc and 350cc cast iron royal enfield Indian bullet.

    • @paulhenshaw4514
      @paulhenshaw4514  Місяць тому +1

      The rockers and guides are interchangable, but not the valves.

      Agree, only a complete signed off road tested example should qualify.

    I had to open the engine on my bullet 500 because the oil is not passing out of the floating bush good enough to catch up with the sump pump. But the connecting rod looks fine with out any play and of course there is a big run out at the clutch side. Can you pls tell me what you think would be the problem is the oil hole might get block or the floating bush holes might get block. Pls let me know

    • @paulhenshaw4514
      @paulhenshaw4514  Місяць тому +1

      Oil is pumped into the engine more slowly than it can be pumped out, that is how they are.

    • @anishpeter11
      @anishpeter11 Місяць тому +1

      So if it’s not pumping enough to the crank case does it creates a situation where the rocker oil flow is interrupted

    • @paulhenshaw4514
      @paulhenshaw4514  Місяць тому +1

      The feed to the rockers will be intermittent, that is normal.

      It takes nerves of steel to go into a "standard Enfield "

  • @grantbaker3336
    @grantbaker3336 Місяць тому +2

    I can understand replacing the rod for a steel one but why change to a roller big end?
    My experiences with these engines in the 70s and 80s roller big ends especially the caged Alpha ones had a very short lifespan the floating bushes on the other hand 50,000 miles wasn't unusual.

    • @paulhenshaw4514
      @paulhenshaw4514  Місяць тому +2

      I have no problem or issues with the plain big ends - except for some recently made ones - as for the roller big ends, it is down to what the customer wants. Lots of my Asbo engines have the alloy rods and plain big ends inside them.
