Kinda sad you feel nothing for V. Was taken against his will, experiemented on, tried to kill him. He then escapes and seeks justice by taking down the monsters who did this to him (and others), while also taking down the government who controls people. He's a hero.
I think the whole point is that it's complicated and heroes sometimes are also the bad guys who do bad things to other people. Where is the line? I agree with you, he is a hero and his actions by the end of the movie have saved an entire country. Millions of lives. There is no question that he is literally a terrorist as well though. That is what a person is when they murder and blow up buildings. That is what he would be called if he did these things irl, even with zero civilian casualties. How far should a person go for justice?
V isn't a hero, He's an anti-hero. On one hand, he is just as bad as the people he kills because it's selfish motivations driving all of their actions: greed, revenge, power, etc. But on the other hand, V truly does want a societal change for the better, and his ideas and desire to inspire the people to rise up are heroic. The whole dichotomy raises such interesting dialog and questions about whether the ends justify the means, how much poor behavior is excused by past trauma, where is the line of personal responsibility in how a person behaves and the choices they make, and how do we work better as a society to progress without extremism.
The character, V, exemplifies something fundamental to the way I live. Words are tools to convey meaning, on their own they have no power, but their meanings can have greater power than any weapon wielded against you. To express those meanings requires you to use the right words, in the right ways, at the right time. This is why freedom of speech is absolutely necessary, and why artificial changes to language and censorship are not only dangerous, but are also tantamount to destruction of property and theft respectively.
Why did you think "I love you" meant she wanted to kiss her? lol. It's meant as a message to make someone feel like tey are human again after being trapped in a prison without hope. ^_^
FYI - this is based on a graphic novel from the 1980s by Alan Moore (who also wrote Watchmen). That was in turn inspired by George Orwell's 1984. It is amazing (and depressing!) how the film, graphic novel and book remain so relevant.
The I love you bit in the letter is a reminder of the humanity that the jailers have taken away from the prisoners. They have had every connection ripped from them, and been treated in a way that has zero love. Love isnt always romantic ❤
I'm always impressed by Hugo Weaving as V. Not many actors could pull this off, not showing their face for the length of the film."One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter" from the 1976 book Harry's Game.
Americans really struggle with this movie for some reason. Especially the importance of FREEDOM over CONTROL. Glad you understood these themes. Even things like the comment "he's a Terrorist, although some part of him is human", are exactly the ways that American media frames their enemies.

V wasn't a TV show. It was a 5-part mini-series on network TV (NBC). I loved it too, back in the day. Don't re-watch it. It doesn't hold up to time. Just keep your untarnished, found memories of it.
The closing scene of this movie serves as a strong send-off for V and the ways of the past. It's funny how several comic book movies prior to the modern era of comic book movies had unique atmosphere to them. This and Blade were both solid movies for their time, but are even better to return to.

Alan Moore wrote this as an antifascist and anarchist manifesto against the Prime Minister ship of Margaret Thatcher. It was released in America after the wild success of his Watchmen limited series the end of Reagan's presidency. The actress was Natalie Portman, who had her head shaved for this role. V for Vendetta is the best film adaptation of Moore's work.

‘If you own or carry a gun, you are weak.” Yes, I am. I, just like every human being on earth can die from a knife to the gut or a wayward bash to the head…. There are people out there who do not care if I live or die, and will happily kill me for the paper in my pocket or just for fun… I therefore keep and carry the means with which to protect my fragile and limited life…
You nailed it in the beginning, calling out that V would have been "conducting" on the roof without Evie if she wasn't on his path that night. Because the performance was not for Evie but for London/England as whole. The good & bad, a message and a warning. V meticulously planning the entire thing for years, hacking the PA system, setting the fireworks, etc... Evie was never in the plan and in fact is an unforeseen "spanner in the works" for V. The whole thing is in motion whether she is involved or not. A main character with no real input to events, is a kinda rare, but well done here. Not saying she isn't important at all, she chose to help V, she chose to not give him up under "interrogation" and she chose to carry V's mantle.
This is based on a comic strip/graphic novel by Alan Moore and David Lloyd in the early 80s, when Margaret Thatcher was prime minister of the UK and Ronald Reagan was president of the US. It was social commentary in that context for that time, but somehow it's become timeless. The movie came out during the presidency of George W. Bush, so it's obviously commentary on that, and I guess what the British Labour Party had become in the 2000s. The TV host/demagogue is obviously supposed to reflect Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, Glenn Beck and people like that, who were big right wing pundits back then, as well as presumably Fox News and other outlets owned by Rupert Murdoch. My favourite character isn't even the 2 main ones. It's the late night talk show host/David Letterman type played by the brilliant Stephen Fry of such great British television shows as Jeeves and Wooster and A Bit of Fry and Laurie (both with Hugh Laurie of "House" in what is closer to his natural accent). The social commentary gets thicker and thicker as the movie goes along, but it's still a comic book movie, and I think the movie balances out the 2 quite well. It's almost like a Tim Burton movie. Batman (1989) was dark, brooding and made just as much for adults as it was for kids, but it was still allowed to be a comic book movie. V For Vendetta does the same thing.
"People would hate this guy in real life." Most dudes wearing guy fawkes masks are doing so because of this movie, and usually have pretty bad opinions (but Anonymous has done some good stuff).
12:30 yes, they don't think of the "T word" as the same as human. However, when a person blows up a building for political change, that is exactly what that person is. The error is not in the label of a terrorist, the error is in the dehumanizing of terrorists.

If you are a fan of the Count of Monte Cristo, you need to see the movie: Sleepers. It is a very good, but dark movie with Kevin Bacon, Brad Pitt, Robert DeNiro, and Dustin Hoffman
Not recognizing Nathalie Portman just rubs me the wrong way as someone of a similar age. So I would strongly recommend watching Leon: The Professional (great action flick and her first movie at age 12 or so) and Heat (a classic crime movie by any measure and one of the best movies of the 1990s)
Not supernatural, governmental experimentation. They essentially made a super soldier, just a more realistic one. Not Captain America, more a viking berserker with a... Vendetta. 👀

I wouldn't say that this is a "far far future". It's a different timeline. It could even be in the past of that timeline. I don't believe there is a cellphone anywhere in this movie, so 'technology-wise' definitely the past. Look at the current state of affairs in the US right now. Some have been using the words "Civil War" for at least a few years.
