    i hope zoos now focus more on species which really havent got much coverage like frogs etc... obviously because tigers are more exciting to look at but those species also need urgent protection...they could educate the public more about them and continue their great conservation efforts

    We probably don't need to spend so much money on giant pandas anymore as according to the IUCN they've been taken off the endangered species list and are now officially classed as 'Vulnerable'. But there are still many other species that need our help. Particularly birds and reptiles, which don't seem to garner as much attention as mammals.

    Zoos are really trying to help. but they are instead making it harder for some of these animals. I personally think having wild animals in captivity is horrid unless we are helping them breed or heal after such work is done they must be returned to the wild. You don't nurture a bird to health and put in a cage, it flys off.

    Zoos have improved massively over the last few decades, especially in the developed world, and they will continue to improve.
    Zoos can also play a huge role in protecting species, animals like elephants, rhinos, tigers, pandas, etc are facing serious trouble in the wild whether by poaching or environmental issues. Zoos offer a safe haven and a significant breeding population (zoos across the world), As such I would say that zoos are vital if you want these species to continuing to exist. Unless you would rather rely on the countries with wild populations to deal with protecting them, which after recent news from South Africa.........I wouldnt bet on it.

    • @9_in_the_afternoon
      @9_in_the_afternoon 8 років тому +4

      I completely see your point, so (building on that) don't you think that it would be better to have safari parks which are dedicated to building up the populations of endangered species (and then releasing them into the wild), rather than keeping animals in glorified cages in a zoo? Many species in zoos don't have a problem as far as being endangered, so presumably you'd agree that they shouldn't be kept in captivity?

    • @brg9327
      @brg9327 8 років тому +3

      I do think safari parks are great. Zoos also have an important educational value to consider as well, so no I wouldnt support ending zoos. However I do believe ALL zoos should keep their animals in the best accommodation possible, with requirements set by experts in which ever species, I assume zoos already do something along these lines.
      As for non endangered species......imo there are numerous factors to consider; habitat requirements, suitible for captivty, financial costs, research benefits, etc. If a species is suitable then yes zoos should be able to keep them.
      If for example a species doesnt adapt to a zoo environment for whatever reason (like the polar bears in the vid) and unless these issues can be rectified, then in my opinion that species shouldnt be allowed for zoos.
      I guess that all species should be evaluated to see whether they are suitable for captivty. At the end of the day, as long as the animals are healthy and happy, then im happy.
      EDIT:
      Going back to safari parks, its become apparent that safari parks in Africa have major issues regarding poaching. A soloution to this which I think is brilliant, is creating new safari parks in other suitable countries. A recent example of this is with rhinos which are in a dire situation in Africa, the solution, take a healthy breading population to a suitable habitat in Australia. Over time, if all successful, a species resurgence can occur. Thats the hope at least.

      +BRG 0001 please educate yourself with up to date data about the true function of zoos and their very small impact on conservation. They are meant to profit from visitors, pure and simple, if those amount of funds would have been given to wildlife protection organizations across the world, the true conservation, protection and on-hand education programs that would have been possible would be instrumental. Sterotipucal behaviour is a very serious and very real condition, significantly shorter lfife spans due to captivity is a real thing, not to mention the sheer fact of having animals put on display for us like paintings in a gallery is very disturbing. We must remember these are LIVING breathing creatures, with emotional and cognative needs and abilities. So I say again in the kindest way, please read real research about this matter, don't just buy into the marketing efforts of zoos to remain open.

    • @SHP2241
      @SHP2241 8 років тому +7

      Maybe you missed it in the video....the "captive breeding experiment" has failed. Captive bred animals don't integrate into to wild successfully. Keeping these animals in zoos and breeding them indefinitely just makes more animals in cages, they will never be released. So don't kid yourself, they breed in captivity not for the wild populations, but for the extra money it brings in. And then they get euthanized, because there aren't enough facilities for them. The animal surplus lists that zoos dump their unwanted animals on are a mile long. Zoos have nothing to do with wild animals, they are nothing but a living museum. If you have seen a lion in a zoo and a lion in the wild, you will realize how different these things are.

    There is a conflict between compassion and profit. I doubt zoos are in business to lose money so unless the animals on display draw customers, zoos don't get that revenue. So, what might be best for the animals - large enclosures in rural locations, without being put on display, and being given some peace and solitude - is not in the interests of selling tickets. As long as that is the case, I don't see that zoos are going to be able to give the animals a better life. Some of them may wish to, but it's a question of what is feasible given their business models.

    I am beyond digusted that this is even a question.
    The vast majority of people who are against, or "icky" with zoos, eat meat, dairy and eggs, and own pets. They don't think twice about that. Yet it's ZOOS that need "revision"?
    Zoos are correcting themselves, all the time. Zoos are the one and ONLY form of animal keeping that is *for the animals*. Food industry, clothing industry, pets - that's all selfish. Zoos were originally just for amusement, to show off strange creatures from a vast and unknown world.
    Today, they are for education, touching people's minds about animals they are never going to meet otherwise (and no, reading about it in a book or seeing a film is NOTHING like getting up close and personal with a real, living, breathing animal), and *saving them from extinction*, in a world that is more and more dangerous for animals, everywhere. And that is OUR fault. So it's on US to fix it.
    To close zoos, would be an absolute disaster for animals. One, it would disconnect people from animals even further. Two, it would cease any research that we can do on animals in zoological settings, to help their wild relatives. And three, it would cease all and any breeding of endangered species - MANY OF WHOM ARE ONLY ALIVE TODAY BECAUSE OF CAPTIVE BREEDING PROGRAMS.

    zoo could be good but the most aren't.
    i worked in one of the most famous zoos in the world for 10 years.
    and for me with my knowledge of animals i have to say the most zoos are not good and they are hypocrite
    zoos breed animals to make money (the don't sale them but with baby animals you get a lot of visitors.
    the breed with animals the are related together and or sick animals who should not get the opportunity to reproduce.
    so i am sure some zooanimals will extinct earlier then the ones in the wild
    if people see that some animals have problems with a life in captivity (elephants die earlier then in the wild and polar bears have fur problems mental problems stereotypical behavement) our zoo argued with
    " yes but the are the ambassador of there kind and look them up protects there species in the wild, and so we have genetic material to reproduce them in the future)
    but this is not true zoos make money and that's it they don't care about genetic material or save them in the wildness.
    i don't speak for all zoos but 95 % of all zoos i know are like that.
    humans killing all the animals in the wild and we are so selfish to look some of them up so we can watch it forever.

      @@venividivici6738 I wrote that two years ago, and my reply to the other guy never got sent. I obviously was not talking about credited zoo's, on the topic of breeding we don't NEED to breed animals it's completely unnecessary. Animals who are endangered, threatened etc, are bred in safe environments with biologists overseeing them.
      Not all zoo's are bad yes, but MOST are. Roadside zoo's are horrific, we need more laws and more restrictions. There are plenty of other alternatives.
      Most of all the animals that are in zoo's are mostly lions, tigers, gorillas, etc. There are not animals that are threatened or need conservation. These are animals who suffer psychologically by being put in a stressful environment, imagine being an apex predator and being mocked by people daily.
      We all love animals and want better for them, the topic of zoo's is something that definitely needs to be talked about 👍 I don't doubt there are keepers who love the animals.
      Like I said children can learn about the beauty of these animals BETTER in sanctuaries, why would you not want to see them in their natural environment?
