      It's hard to explain since it involves complicated linguistics and I'm not a linguist, but safe to say is that while a monkey can learn three signs that mean "banana", "give" and "me", it has no way of understanding that the three signs need a specific order for it to make sense.
      Language in the proper sense is still something that only humans possess, as far as we know.

      +SquigPie No. It has been well documented thst several species have language. We simply don't understand it, and vice versa. They fully understand it and use it to communicate. Not all language is written or spoken. And there is much out there humans just don't understand

    • @kurremkarmerruk8718
      @kurremkarmerruk8718 8 років тому +10

      Language, by definition, is understandable. You simply have to decode the linguistics of it, and viola!
      Orcas have the most fascinating languages, and amazingly they differ from pod to pod. Releasing orphaned Killer Whales back into the wild is notoriously difficult because, unless you know which pod they originally came from, they won't understand their new friends. :-(
      But the difference between humans and animals is that they do not, maybe cannot, articulate abstract concepts. metaphysics allows us to create systems of thoughts which regulate our actions, for example: logic, which might teach us what we should do if we want certain outcomes, or causality, which helps us understand the consequences of our actions in a way which lets us harness activity with a far-off goal in mind (like building a house).
      Linguists don't know why we have a greater complexity of language, but they do agree that animals do not have any language as comprehensive as ours.
      They probably cause themselves less problems by not having complex language, though!
