For all those who Doubt Dr Swamy-- He is Harvard Phd in Economics at the age of 24. He is one of the five Phd students of Paul Samuelson (one of the greatest economist of modern history). He has written Samuelson-Swamy theory on index numbers. He was a proffesor at Harvard at the age of 27.
I agree with you. But why isn't the BJP putting him as FM? He is the only BJP guy who says that our economy is in dire straits. That fact that Modi knows that he has a person knowledgeable about economics but not giving him the post of FM says volumes of this governments incompetence.

Funny thing is Mr Swamy himself was never a pure Economics students. He did graduation in maths and then masters in stats in isi before doing a phd in economics. Raghuram rajan too studied different subjects in graduation and masters before gaining a phd in economics. So where's the difference? Manmohan Singh was a pure economics student.

Raghuram Rajan has studied in finance, not economics, and economics and finance are 2 very different things, whereas swamy is PhD in economics from Harvard and has been a teacher there, you really are deluded to think Rajan is an economist. @@girijap2185 Even a 10 year old would've been sure of the consequences of demonetisation 😂, it was actually a decent idea, but the government should've done more when it came to dealing with long queues, lack of the amount of notes in various banks and ATMs, etc., which later lead to bad effects on the economy.
Now I ask you, If he was such a good "economist" as media portrays him, why did MSMEs start closing down rapidly when he became the RBI governor? He kept on increasing interest rate which lead to increase in unemployment in MSMEs. Just get over it, he's not studied in economics, and therefore he doesn't have a knowledge of an economist.

Rajan is a financial engineer, good at running financial firms, not an Economist, who runs an economy. The difference is similar to that between being a marine engineer and the captain of a ship, who must also know about ocean currents, weather and morale of the crew.

Rather, by speaking out of turn on the topics which have been out of bounds for any RBI Governor, like freedom of speech, he diluted the weight of some valid economic arguments he had with the government, e.g., NPAs. For instance, we cannot have the army chief talking for or against Section 370. RBI Governor cannot be a rockstar. I rate Bimal Jalan as the best RBI Governor in last 30 years or so. Flexible, solid as a theorist, a people's manager and one who resolved conflicts constructively but never making a show of it. This is an inside view, which I can share as an outsider now.

Raghuram Rajan is a Btech from IIT Delhi,Management from IIM ahmedabad , Phd from MIT. He was the professor of economics at University of Chicago after that he was the 7th Chief economist and head of research at IMF. In 2005 Rajan in a conference predicted the financial crisis on america and gave some solutions to prevent that the US Treasury secretary then insulted Rajan and denied his predictions but Rajan's predictions were proven right in 2008 financial crisis there was a documentary made on the crisis called Inside Job in 2010 and he was interview do see that. He was also the CEA to India and RBI governor

Actually, Mr. Rajan 1st did BTech in Delhi , MBA from IIM and Phd from MIT ( Massachusetts , USA ).
Is SSwamy ko Yeh samajh mein nahi aata ki house prices were running amock by less interest rates and they were leaping up for 16 years Straight. This was also one of the excuse given by BJP for de-monetisation. The high realestate price makes your products uncompetitive. India was exporting so less already, you could not have added any more to the exports. Besides, nobody with less money (Essential Workers) with high real estate prices be able to afford houses in cities.
If SSwamy believes the theory of interest rates so much, why does India always keeps its interest rates high in comparison to West. Answer to that is because India does not have much capital in the banks and keeps looking for FDI inflow.
SSwamy chickened out debating with Rajan about economy when Rajan came back to visit India and he was giving interviews in TVs and justifying the reason for high interest rates. SSwamy was not to be seen rebutting that anywhere. This man thinks he is good economist because he knows politics. Then should he not seek to become RBI governor himself using his politics. Country can only know how good economic knowledge one possess once they are in right post. But he will not do it because he wants to become finance minister. Also perhaps as RBI governor also reports to finance minister. Basically, position is more important to him than proving that he knows something.
Frankly, this guy believes if your first degree is Engg then you can never do something else as complex as economy. So, by that yardstick, he himself was statistician, so how can he be economist. Irony is that Madam Curie won Nobel prizes in both Chemistry and Physics. She could not have done that as per SSwamy as app the first degree remains stuck to some one forever to be able to do something different.
High class irrelevant talker he has become. Ask him to justify de-monetisation again? No body from BJP has raised their hands and sought apologies. They still pretend something good and only operational issues were the problem. Fact is country lost big time in that scam. It was no reform as all the black money became white and all fake currency became genuine, not to mention the 25 to 40 % commission earned by BJP itself for turning black money into white. SSwamy backed Modi for de-monetisation and he still thinks himself as economist. The irony of it beats me.

By the way, lecturing in a place ( even if it is Harvard) does not equate to having a degree from the same place. Did Swami graduate from Harvard? No, he was lecturing there only and that lecture was also in bygone era when world economy or India ‘s own economy was much different. So while swamy asserts that rajan etc don’t know or understand Indian economy, how come he is the only one who is able to understand it ? Ideally swamy wants Modi’s seat and i have no problem as i believe give a person a chance to prove itself. Modi took a chance . He claimed that he can fix India and he failed big time, so why not celebrate Swami’s Harvard credentials by giving him a top job or at least a seat in the govt .

Most probably the first lessons of economics Raghuram Rajan got was in IIT Delhi and were given by Subramaniam Swamy who used teach Economics in IIT Delhi during that time.

Do you even know the concept of macro and micro economics? All the finance subjects deals only with micro economics whereas an economist knows both micro and macro economics with a higher mathematical base... and swamy is a Harvard and MIT educated guy (that too under the mentorship of both Paul Samuelson and Simon Kuznets) with a mathematical background with M.stat from ISI Calcutta whereas Raghuram rajan has a bachelor's in electrical engineering, masters and phd in finance, ofcourse RR is not an economist.

IMF is NOT the greatest institute in economics. Most top grade students of economics are hired by private companies for high salary. Lower grade students join IMF like institutions at lesser salaries.

Moreover a high interest rate today provides room for cutting interest rate in the years ahead which can positively impact growth

@Anthony Gomes thats precisely my point, all this jargon will give you intellectual orgasm but it doesn't work in real life. Please look at the inflation and RBI rates chart for the last 4 years, its not inversely proportional as you are implying, infact for most of the time, they both are declining in tandum. Movever the premise of your conclusion is flawed because of following reasons:
1) India is savings economy unlike US which is consumption economy and an average household in India takes loan much less than an average american( you can check the stats). Money multiplier as a result of loans in case of India is much less that too in the formal economy( informal economy runs differently as you must already know)
2) Corporates account for more than 70% of the loans in India. Equity market of India is doing great and hence these loans are not taken to start some stuck projects. These are mostly taken to bring down company's WACC to increase company's profitability..
Bottomline, we need something that works for Indian conditions even if it doesn't sound very sophisticated during a dinner conversation of economists

I recommend watching a famous documentary “Inside Job” ; where Rajan’s detailed interview is included. Politicians like S Swamy can never understand him.
