The most incredible thing about this is Rik's vocals. Absolutely flawless for a live recording, something that almost never happens. This is one of the great live sets in rock history.
I’m gonna play the devil’s advocate on this one I believe his guitar work with the chords he’s applying while singing and working that volume knob is just amazing
@micaelatomtlund7567 I've heard that about alotbof performances but never this one. This is pure. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm gonna put my money on the reverb making the notes last out longer than he is on the mic.
Triumph slays. Rik Emmet is such an underated guitar player and singer. His effortless high range. He can hit those highs in his sleep. Seriously, what an amazing talent that guy is! And the drummer has a hell of a voice as well. These guys just kick ass and were never given the recognition they deserved.
I met my wife at the US festival i asked her to get on my shoulders we spent the day together 12 hours later i asked her to marry me, to my surprise she said yes, we are still together

"What's a nice boy doing in a place like this"...sums up Triumphs appearance on Metal day....they not only stole the show, they were the show. Never Surrender.
I’ve learnt the entire song and i have to say they are the hardest chords in the song, the rest don’t have a stretch like that but can be perceived as difficult. But that’s just me
I met Rik Emmett in 1988 when they were on our record label ( MCA RECORDS). Rik was such a nice gentleman and I told him that I saw Triumph and Mountain on the same bill in 1985 in East Rutherford, NJ. He sat in my office for about an hour and he signed a Triumph poster for me and personalized it but he wrote it using a cheap bic pen but everyone I show it to said that was really nice of him. He's an excellent and a very underrated guitarist and a great singer too. Thank You Rik Emmett for everything 😎🎸
I was driving into the parking lot on that Sunday, got to hear some of these incredible bands from there. Slept on the hood my car and went on Monday. Saw some amazing bands as well. Wish I would have been there one day earlier - always loved this song. On this same day...Van Halen, Scorpions, Triumph (of course), Judas Priest, Ozzy Osborn, Joe Walsh, Motley Crue. The day I went, opened with Little Steve and the Disciples of Soul, Berlin, Quarterflash, U2, Missing Persons, Pretenders, John Cougar, Stevie Nicks and David Bowie. Yep, U2 was between Quarterflash and Missing Persons. How much would that ticket cost today?
Definitely the best!!!! I think David Gilmour, John Fogerty, Joe Walsh, Tommy Bolin, Mark Farner, Neil Young, and Joan Jett deserve being mentioned. There are a few more, but this is just my personal faves!
It's a very short list of guys on Rik's level guitar wise and can hit his vocals, and Live - the real test. Randy Jackson of Zebra isn't rik but I'd but him 2nd or 3rd. Frank Marino would be another.
Always loved Triumph. Used to listen to them in HS and college in the 80s. Is it just me or does he and Geddy Lee have amazingly similar voices? Merely coincidence but it always struck me that they were similar.
1982 my mom wouldn't take me to Madison WI to see this show. I was 12 and had to watch my little bro and sis, my mom got a flat on the way up and missed the show. I laughed!!!!
awwesome memories. i was at that concert. quiet riot, motley crue, triumph, judas priest, scorpions, ozzy, and van halen. we were camped out in Lytle Creek in my friends webers bread truck! friday, saturday, and Sunday, over 200,000 people at glen helen regional park . we were shroomin onfriday rockin out on booze and pot and cocaine saturday and sunday was punk day so we stayed at camp nursing our hangovers.
You don't have to be from Ireland to love this song Tre but it helps it never fails to tear me up.Not just for what she's singing about but how she sings it .Dolores is such a loss to the music industry up there with Sinead O'Connor as one of the greatest ever RIP.Thanks for doing this version although as I said they were all fire.🔥That bass and those drums were incredible too what a vibe in the crowd.Oh to have been there 🙏
The only other guitarist I've seen kick ass with it and actually swing it around was Steve Clark from Def Leppard. not an easy instrument to handle and Emmett is one of the best ever.
i have watched most of the us festival footage from 83 and other years as well.I have yet to see any band bring it like TRIUMPH did during this show. One of the best bands to come out of Canada!!!
Triumph is amazing! Such great music! And, if I may say, Rik is SO talented-- plays so many genres on his guitars, and songwriting too, on top of the magnificent vocals he does.. He still tours, so you can still go hear some awesome Triumph songs, and get some really goood laughs with his fantastic sense of humor! :-)
It is hard to believe all the whole thing came from 3 guys on stage!!! Rik and Gil in their element. This trio trumped very body else on stage that day.
Agreed. Rik and Gil are masters and both mastered the art of playing their instrument and singing at the same time...very few can do that. Dave Meneketti of Y&T and the late Gary Moore comes to mind. Mike Levine perhaps is the silent one that held those two talents together..just a thought.
Man i love these guys, their voices, the songs, the guitar the bass the drums, everythang. Im at aw with how great they are.such such talent. Wish i could have seen this concert in person an met the band.i wish they would start putting out new material an go on the road again, and come to lexington or louisville ky.
He had a sweet lineup of guitars for this show..the Ibanez Artist double neck, the Framus Akkerman, and the red baby Dean........what a great guitar player!!
Lucky you, I can understand why ! Canada is a great wild nation producing some of the most kick ass rock bands ever (Triumph, Steppenwolf, Sum 41, Theory of a deadmann, Nickelback, Three days grace ...)
You are so right. I always said RIOT was the most underrated band of all time, but then there is TRIUMPH...WOW. I just got a new dvd of the us festival from 1983. They did steal the show, they are on the only band that I know that put put a dvd from the event. Fuck the are so fucking good. Everytime I listen to them I go "fuck" all over again! I was at the show, had the video tape, had the cd for quite some time, but damn. Finally going to tour again!!!!!!!!!! NEVER FUCKING SURRENDER!
The most incredible thing about this is Rik's vocals. Absolutely flawless for a live recording, something that almost never happens. This is one of the great live sets in rock history.

I believe the vocals are dubbed in studio, but anyway, they are great live!!
@micaelatomtlund7567 I've heard that about alotbof performances but never this one. This is pure. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm gonna put my money on the reverb making the notes last out longer than he is on the mic.

Once in a lifetime my freind
Rik's voice and guitar are so detailed and spot on. Pure talent from 3 guys from the north!
I was at this concert in 1983, all three days, it was one month before I got out of the Marine Corps, my friends told me I had a great time ! 🤘🤪🍄🍻
Never heard of them just came across this vid ..What a voice 😊
I was at this concert!
Eric Underwood Class of 81 Downey High school CA ✌️
Look up April Wine, another Canadian band of the 80s.
Unreal aren't they? They got back together for the first time in 35 years and made a movie last year. They still have it going on...
This is the band that brought us "lay it on the line" which I guess I assumed was Styx idk?! So great!!!!
Watch Fight the good fight. Man, what a voice! And Live!
"What's a nice boy doing in a place like this"...sums up Triumphs appearance on Metal day....they not only stole the show, they were the show.
Never Surrender.
its taken me a whole week just to grasp those first three chords of the song lmao... this band is gold
I’ve learnt the entire song and i have to say they are the hardest chords in the song, the rest don’t have a stretch like that but can be perceived as difficult. But that’s just me
An absolutely amazing band, even more so that they are a trio. What is it with Canadians and amazing trios. Where do they get all of that sound.
What? No love for Bachman-Turner Overdrive even though they are not a trio?
Especially so for Triumph: vocal-guitar, bass-keys, drums-vocals- they throw it all out there.
Getting a Lot of mileage out of the 12 string sounds...
Such a kick ass band! Their live performances were epic! Saw them a few times and they never disappointed!
Rik's voice reaches the stratosphere and touches the farthest person in that crowd!!!!
Very smooth and controlled without effort
First Time I saw Triumph was back in '78 (Midland, TX) I was completely blown away by. Still Am 42 years later....

I do not get the 'cheap bic pen' part. He should have whipped out a gold one?
Weird that he sat in your office for an hour and you're complaining about a Bic pen?
Thank you, Triumph, for your light. Beautiful playing from everyone in the band. You are rock titans, truly,
Love that tasty base break into the solo here. Rik an incredible talent
One of the best bands i ever saw back in the days.
Amazing band and an amazing performance.
What a musician and singer.
Triumph ruled that Festival!
Not an easy guitar part to play, let alone live, plus a wild time signature, and then add this vocal performance on top. It challenges reality.
They dont make Rock bands like this anymore. Triumph was absolutely Amazing
Lyrics
Out in the streets inspiration comes hard
The joker in the deck keeps handin' me his card
Smilin' friendly he takes me in
Then breaks my back in a game I can't win
Jivin', hustiln', what's it all about?
Everybody always wants the east way out
Thirty golden pieces for the Judas kiss
What's a nice boy doin' in a place like this?
Never Surrender - keep your dreams alive
Never Surrender - hold your head up high
Modern apathetics; you got plenty of nothing to say
Some are born to follow: some will make their own way
Today you found a hero tomorrow you'll forget
You're lookin' for convenient truth you haven't found it yet
You don't make commitments no time for regrets
Easy come and easy go and easy to forget
You don't ever take responsibility
Don't you know that part of you is part of me
Never Surrender - keep your dreams alive
Never Surrender - hold your head up high
Never Surrender, it's easier said than done
But you go to finish what's already begun
Never, that's forever, seems like such a long time
But I only got one life to live - It's gonna be mine
Never Surrender - we cannot be denied
Never Surrender - spread your wings and fly

I was there too
Awesome show !
Love this song thank you triumph 🇨🇦
670,000 people in the audience. Wow!
Triumph at their best. Amazing!
the greatest combo(singing and guitar) rock singer of all-time...who else is there?
Geddie Lee of course...
Definitely the best!!!! I think David Gilmour, John Fogerty, Joe Walsh, Tommy Bolin, Mark Farner, Neil Young, and Joan Jett deserve being mentioned. There are a few more, but this is just my personal faves!
Devin Townshend

TOURING PLEASE! THE BEST ROCK CANADIAN BAND!
They play like bad brains on i against I. This is wild. I listened to them as a kid and had no idea they were this hardcore.

America is awesome. 1of. My favorites. Out of. 8. Bands
America might be Awesome.... but these Guys are CANADIAN ❤

um, what?
Who has better melodies between Triumph and Rush? My choice is Triumph.
Tough choice. Love them both.
Your wanting to rate two bands just because there Canadian?
Pretty shortsighted isn’t it?
Badass bass
"Never surrender. It's easier said than done." Truth. 🤣
Rik Emmett is a rockstar!
US Festival. I was there. Nutz...
La giusta apoteosi dei pionieri degli anni settanta
Nobody cooler than Mike Levine.
Yeah I would like to party with Mike
Shit! He did all this with a double neck around his neck.
Those things weigh a ton
The only other guitarist I've seen kick ass with it and actually swing it around was Steve Clark from Def Leppard. not an easy instrument to handle and Emmett is one of the best ever.
Sur cette belle chanson je vous souhaite une bonne journée 😂
I was there and Triumph stole the show
I didn't know they were only 3 guys.
LEVIN
CALIFORNIA JAM.
I really can’t take Triumph seriously unless Rick is in a red Spandex onsey
lol
Later Motley Vrie came out and Screeched and Played Airband . This bands Truly Singing and playing and playing more than two note Crap.
Motley crue played earlier b4 Triumph. Scorpions and Van Halen played after
What brand guitars did he use?
Looks like an Ibanez AR1200
😮💨😮💨😮💨
Riks sermingly limitless range was always one of my favorite parts of this band.
...spot on performance !!!! ....and that voice ....amazing band !!!! Triumph deserve more credit for their work !!!!
one of the most talented bands of all time. they all had class and the music is
better than anything today.
My God, what an awesome performance! This is when they were at the top of their game... very talented musicians!
One of the first Lp's I owned back in the 80's and I fell in love with this band automatically. This song is just amazing, classic stuff.
Nice to be able to watch this in HD video and w/ great audio. Great tune, great players, nice voice.
Some awesome Triumph.

The insrumental solo sounds so kick ass 80's, great performance from one of those long lost bands that brings me right back to my high school years.
What pipes, what a voice!!
under rated under rated under rated rock & roll band of all time
great show, remember road tripping from NorCal with my high school buddies for the weekend. Triumph KILLED it that day.
i have watched most of the us festival footage from 83 and other years as well.I have yet to see any band bring it like TRIUMPH did during this show. One of the best bands to come out of Canada!!!
My mind is in a whirl-wind right now....I needed this!!! Thank You!!!
Never surrender is by far triumphs best song.the guitar solo is so great and when u combine that with rik Emmetts voice it makes it amazing.
Check out Rock 'N' Roll Machine from this concert...pretty damned good guitar work on it.
Triumph is amazing! Such great music! And, if I may say, Rik is SO talented-- plays so many genres on his guitars, and songwriting too, on top of the magnificent vocals he does.. Rick is a hell of singer and guitar player! a complete master!
They should in R&R hall of Fame, grew up with these guys!
