FX Crown Barrels and the UK sub 12 ft lb law

In this video I discuss whether it is worth getting a .177 and .22 barrel for your FX Crown Air Rifle if you are subject to the UK Sub 12 ft / lb law. Does it work properly or are you just throwing your money away ?

It turns out that this issue applies only to the FX Crown that does not have special Sub 12ft lb barrel options. The FX Impact has different barrels for the UK market, but the Crown does not. Therefore do not buy an FX Crown in sub 12 ft lb and expect to swap barrels out and still get close to sub 12 ft lb. It will not work.
Steve, the barrel for the impact is the same as the Crown, they have different shrouds. There is no reason why FX cannot fit the sub 12 barrel end the same as the impact.
Not what I have heard from ASI the importer to the UK for FX. Have you tried it yourself, an FX sub 12 barrel in a Crown ?
@@airgunology No, I don't own a Crown, only an Impact. If what ASI say is true, it seems odd seeing the impact has smaller diameter port. I personally would contact FX direct as ASI are not very technical👍
Presumably this is only a temporary situation?? One of the reasons why I've ordered one is for this capability!! And lets be fair it's the only thing that sets it out from the rest. I will be contacting the shop tomorrow.
Well done Steve! very well explained, great that you have no fear of ruffling feathers... information like this could save someone big money and big disappointment!
You've already got the other commenter reaching for the phone!
Good on you!
from NZ!
FAN BL@@DY TASTIC!!!!! you have prodiced your best ever video, no major terminology screw ups and you've produced content a novice as well as a seasoned shooter/tweaker can grasp !! WELL DONE MATE!!!!
thank you, took me ages to get this right in my head.
Totally agree!!
Totally agree. very well put together many thanks.
Yep.
Full agreement from me. 👍
BSA used to sell a PCP rifle (I believe it was called the Firebird) with interchangeable barrels in .22 and .177 and the .177 barrel was longer which brought up the power of the less efficient smaller pellet. In a precharged air rifle barrel length plays a major part in the development of power the same as powder burners. In this case buy a .177 at sub 12 ft lbs and reduce the length of a .22 cal barrel until the power is reduced to sub 12 ft lbs. I remember reading that Webley and Scott found the difference in swapping barrels from .22 to .177 to be 18 percent drop in power.
Well done Steve, well explained. I have the FX impact and noticed the 177 is less powerful but still love the gun my FX is sub 12 although I do have FAC certificate and many rifles to go with it. the FX is good for my close permissions and is adequate for these . Love your videos
Thanks David for confirming this for me. Went out on a limb making this video
Well done with the explanation and for exposing the problem. I don't think however that problem is so much with the FX but is with the law itself. Here in Canada we are limited to muzzle velocity to determine license requirements. Any device designed to produce more than 500 feet per second, must require an FAC or firearms acquisition certificate to own. So be careful what you wish for because the UK may very well adopt the same law. Toss away foot pounds and substitute for FPS. Imagine being restricted to 500 FPS with an air gun! Your point was made clear however, thanks for the video.
True, as I said, FX make a cracking rifle and it is not their problem. It is the UK law that is causing the problem and making not worth buying FX barrels if sub 12. I am sure happens in other power limited countries too. It is a kinda taboo subject and I know it is catching out buyers
That's interesting about the Canadian laws. I was in Canada back in the early 80s and the laws were not so tough then, but if you are limited by the 500 ft/p/s rule then the largest calibre would make the most sense, or is the calibre restricted to .177 and .22, as a rifle using a .30 calibre would create way more energy than a .177. A JSB Exact weighing 8.44 grains at 500 ft/p/s is only 4.68 ft/lbs which is well under our air pistol laws, where as a 50.15 grain JSB Exact in .30 calibre pushes out a whopping 27.84 ft/lbs of energy. Not the brightest of laws considering this, so it puts the Canadians in the same boat as here in the UK. "Laws that don't make much sense".
I partially agree except that the Canadian law was designed to EXCLUDE bows from being restricted. A crossbow can easily exceed 12 FP but not the 500 fps restrictions. The law pertains to any device not just guns. So if you have a compound bow for example that produces 45 FP but does not exceed 500 FPS than it is not required that you have an FAC certificate to buy or lend one or borrow one.
Well done Steve, very good video, explained it well, it should make people think twice before buying one. Great channel by the way.
Thanks Nick, I try to bring it down a few levels where us none experts can understand it and cut the BS.
Nicely explained Steve... its a lovely gun but at end of the day like you say, its not really a gun for the UK market.
Thanks Peter
Hi Steve, I have a Crown 177
Sorry I meant 65 bar and 90 bar respectively, I expect you guessed that anyway. C
See my pinned post. FX Crown as of Nov 18 does not support SUB 12 ft lb barrel swaps. The contents of this video will happen on the Crown until they support UK sub 12 ft lb barrels as they do with the impact.
Wow ...I said it was gonna be worth waiting for ( on the FB group ) ... personally id go JUST .177 get that up too about 11ftlb ...sod .22 .. theres plenty of power for hunting , hft , target shooting ect .. no point in FAC in this country unless yer doing some sort of professional pest control ect .. I think some folk apply just too say theve got a fire arms cert ... luckily for me , should I get the " urge " too hunt big game ( which Is very unlikely ) id go hunting with me son , hes got all the licences needed and permissions for foxing ect ect .. I'll stick too sub 12 in my back yard ..and maybe a spot of ratting now and again .. kinda makes the " crown " an overpriced " hey look what ive got " rifle ...probably no more accurate then my typhoon ...
It hurt my head thinking about this and thought it deserved a separate video before the crown video so I could reference it.
ETC
very interesting , something to think about in the future , you just need 2 people with the same gun and a barrel swop and do a chrono test
yup, as total proof.
Thats exactly what you can do with a crown regulator. Very much is a alan key and twist job
I've got the fx crown with 177 barrel and .22 barrel and there both running 11.5ftbs and 11.7 ftb so they work the hole in the 177 barrel is bigger so works more efficient if the .22 barrel had the same size hole it would be over the legal limit of 12ftbs
Is this on max power .30 and max hammer for both barrels ? Please measure in mm the transfer port hole in the 22 and 177 barrel.
Yes Steve on the 177/22 transfer port and max power on the hammer I'll measure the transfer ports later I also had the fx impact with 177 and .22 barrels both just under the legal limit the transfer port on the 177 looks a lot bigger
You can get sub 12 barrels for the impact, but not the crown as of Nov 18 according to ASI the importer. So I am very interested in how you have 12 sub barrels for .22 and .177 for your crown that give 11.x ftlbs on max settings with no adjustments between barrel swaps. Thanks
Also, what happens when you turn the dial to .25 / .30 ? You should by law be measuring on this max setting as the coppers would measure
Well explained, I've learnt a thing or two from this vid, thanks Steve.
Thanks dude, glad it came across like that, took me ages to try and work out how to explain it in layman terms.
Absolutely spot on.
I’ve yet to see any power adjustable sub12 gun on the range that outshoots my fixed power sub12.
You start at sub12 and the only way is down.
I mean no disrespect (😐) but I’ve seen so many Impacts sold in bits because shooters buy one and overnight become an expert tuner, only to completely ruin the gun.
One guy has had three in the past six months and all are, and this is the technical term, completely knackered.
Not even a gunsmith has been able to fix the last one as it is. It basically needs a full rebuild with all new parts. (i.e. a new gun)
The aubergine? With the hidden balls inside one in the middle one to the left 🙀
Brilliant explanation Steve keep up the great work you do.
it's the surface area on the pellet base!
the larger the base/piston takes less pressure to move it? Simple physics! 😉
Yes didn't want to bog the video down too much with all that
Well constructed video, very infomative enjoyed it
thank you
Great video as always Steve, very informative, I think it will make people think twice before buying the FX air rifles now.
It was only meant to explain why people have issues with them at sub 12
My sub 12lfb crown in .177 has just arrived at my local RFD. After ordering back in june So I'll find out soon what I get. I won't be doing any barrel swapping but I do love to tinker with my rifles. It's just as fun to me as shooting them. My reason to get it was for the tinkering ability plus it's just different to other rifles on the market. I also tend to strip and rebuild them my self so keeping warranties dosnt bother me I also have an BSA R10 SE with huma reg and shoots just aswell as my dad's daystate wolverine R minus the shot count. I was going to get a wolverine R but I can shoot my dad's rifle so ordered the crown just to be different if im disappointed ill just sell it on or send it back fingers crossed ill be happy with it
Good luck, the Crown is a nice rifle.
@@airgunology fingers crossed your video gave me more information on the rifle that im sure will be very useful cheers
I may have stirred a little hornets nest on this. I have found mixed messages and have pieced it all together in the video. If you have got a sub 12 .177 then the 1st thing I would do is chrono it to ensure under 12 ft lb. I am sure it will be. If you decide to get a .22 barrel for it, ensure it has a 2mm or less transfer port otherwise you will be illegal. As far as I know, you can't get this barrel yet in the UK for the crown, but you can for the impact.
@@airgunology some times you have to ruffle some featheres to get to the bottom of things it's a good thing. For me i won't be swapping the barrels so I'm good on that front. But im more conserned they could set the .177 to low to prevent you going over 12lfb if you fit an fac .22 barrel?? I will find out soon enough. I allways ensure my rifles are legal but there will be those that don't check they are legal because they just assume they are so those are the people that need to be carefull Very informative video really enjoyed it 👍
Are you boy getting any form of accuracy out of .177?
Good vid lovely rifle but I completely understand what your saying very true so unless you shoot .22 then stay away
Sort of, what I am saying is be aware of the issue if you are sub 12. If you are sub 12 with .177 and drop a .22 in you will be illegal unless you re-tune.
Nice one Steve. The efficiency difference is well known between the two calibres. It's a shame that there is not enough ability to bring the power up if you originally own one in .22 then drop down to .177. It would be best to buy the .177 first then make the adjustments to bring the .22 down from the .177 settings. After all it's the users responsibility to make sure that there air rifle is legal when used. The user can't blame the dealer for an overpowered rifle once purchased, as it would then be your responsibility to make sure it was within the 12 ft/lb limit.
The laws really are crazy in the UK when it comes to airguns. We have a club member with the FX Impact in both calibres. I haven't seen him in a while, but I will ask him if he is having the same problems with his. I expect as long as the rifle is shooting within the law no matter which barrel is fitted at the time, you can't go wrong. If the .177 is tuned up to the legal limit, you are fine. You would obviously need to make all the adjustments before fitting the .22 barrel, then once fitted as long as it falls within the legal limit, then you are fine again. I am sure there are users out there that have managed to sort this one out. It would only be illegal if you fitted the .22 barrel with the .177 settings, so as long as you work out the settings with each barrel and make the adjustments afterwards before fitting either barrel, then that is the way around it.
Unfortunately as you say, the laws in the UK are crazy. We are not allowed to be given permission to TURN DOWN the .22 with the dials to bring it sub 22 as we are not to be trusted. So this throttles the FX's with swapable barrels in 177 variant.
Swap mine all day long 177 and 22 both firing same ftlb with sub 12 it's all down to the port size on the brass part at the end of the barrels transfer port I believe Fac is 4mm .22 sub 12 is 2mm
Uk is limiting airgun accident, or at least the fatal one..but what you said is true..business companies can't afford to make everyone happy..so my advice, buy a unit of an fx crown and enjoy it as it is..save money to buy that extra barrel to buy a beer, go for a massage or maybe go on a trip to Sweden
Hi Steve forgot to say both my barrels are for sub 12ftbs fx crown
The crown is a nice rifle but not worth the 2 grand,
The impact isn’t worth it either, not in 12ft pound ,
I speak as someone who has owned both,
Stick to one calibre per rifle for the U.K. ,sub12
The brocock bantam sniper hr is a bloody good value rifle
My conclusions as well, money wasted on sub 12
Excellent video - very informative
Thanks for watching.
I own a Crown and Impact (unrestricted US Versions). Great rifles, but with all those gizmos things do go wrong. My Crown is in the shop If Iwere airgunning in the UK, I might opt for the HW100.
Well that could be a whole different story. We in UK don't even get a chance to play with the dials to any great effect unless we get a FAC license.
Can i upgrade a sub 12lb fx crown to a FAC ? As my country has no power limit. Thank you.
Hi Steve. I dreamed about this problem. The barrel on the .22 has to be shorter !!!!! Exempel : 17 inches in .22 and 22 inches in .177
This should equal the sprat between the calibers . Ma I should talk to the air gun producers to make some money . haha
If my thoughts are worth something let me know. LOL
Nah, pellet has already accerelated within the barrel and has the energy applied. The only way is different transfer port sizes on the barrels for sub 12. But this means more barrels, stock and logistics for FX. They do it on the Impact already if you can find one. Thank you, please share and join our FB group. facebook.com/groups/351221505224875/
I just buy .22 , I’ve got big fingers so it’s easier to load , I’ve a few 177’s but I’ve never bothered getting new barrels etc I’ll just buy another different rifle to add to my collection
.177 has its benefits of lower trajectory and faster pellets
Well done mate, an honest comprehensive review. That’s why I subscribe.
thank you Russel
Very good informative video 👍🏽
Glad you think so!
Good video and yet the FX Crown in FAC in their own advertising says, a .177 gets more shots per fill than a .22 which gets more than a .25 which gets more than the .303 ?
Great topic; thank you.
thanks for watching
They can do it piss easy makebthevlarger cal barrels shorter thus lowering the power each barrel change i.e 1000mm in 177 500mm in 22 and 350 in 25
They can, also making the transfer port smaller will work. But this is additional barrel types to stock for us Brits and not cost effective for them.
Can't you just increase the regulator pressure when swapping caliber? If there's anti tamper then it's ridiculous. Thousands of people own Theoben Rapids which is the easiest regulator to adjust ever.
Hopefully something will change regarding the anti tuning (tamper) plugs
True if you are sub 12 and hence the video
Well done Steve you have just saved me a heap of hard earned cash.
What’s the problem.
If you want a more powerful rifle. Is it really that difficult to apply for a license
Actually yes, it can be. But this video is to cut the sales BS and tell people what to watch for it they just "want a crown". It is good to have information and that is what my videos are all about.
Fair enough.
Here in Ireland we have to apply for a license for any rifle we want. No matter what power it is
@@poulo69 So i believe. As much as us in UK bitch and moan about restrictions, some places have it worse than us.
Great clip. I knew this was going to be probably the case . but glad you tested it. some crono tests with the figures would have made it a lot better. The proof is in the pudding as they say! UK Sub 12ft lb law is a difficult subject. If I stick an h&n piledriver pellet in any of my sub 11.5ft 177 guns they go over the limit!! Also it is the responsibility of the owner not the gunshop to make sure the gun is legal. I know someone that bought a brand new gun and when he tested it it was around 14ft lb .What do you do ? Stick it in the boot and take it back! Get stopped & 5 years in Prison awaits you! Or ring the police to explain you have an unlicensed firearm at your property that wasn't your fault!
At the end of the day, it is your rifle and your responsibility to be legal under 12 ft lbs. So I would say everyone should set to 11.5 ft lb to give some wiggle room should the police want to test it.
Steve your reply doesn't address my issues .please read it again.Steve your the expert how do I adjust the power on my airarms FTP900 & Galahad? Daystate limited edition regal? FX Crown? & HW110 Even if I didn't care about loss of warranty? IT'S really not that simple!! PS I await your tutorials !
"Also it is the responsibility of the owner not the gunshop to make sure the gun is legal."
- not when they first sell it to you. It is the responsibility of the RFD to check that the weapon they are selling to you is legal for you to own. That applies to all airweapons and firearms. I know quite a few shooters at my club who have bought airguns that have been over the limit. Fortunately, the shooters have chrono'd those guns and returned them for a refund. I know many shooters who don't own one, and I bought my first chrono two years ago, despite having been shooting for forty years.
Surely more air for the .177 would mean simply drilling out the entry port at the end of the barrel as long as the mod stays below 12 ft/lbs at the muzzle? Or have I read that all wrong?
Anyway, great video and convinces me if going for an FX, then go for the Impact.
Also, I had no idea just how long this rifle is when the shroud is pulled fully out. Nearly four feet long goes a little beyond a 'hunting' air rifle despite its incredible accuracy. Might just stick with my HW 100.
Yup, you'll make a few enemies but outweighed by friends for daring to challenge the claims for this otherwise superb air weapon but certainly not, sub 12 lbs UK side.
Thanks.
Yes if you know what you are doing, drill out the probe for the .177 barrel.
Why not buy a 177 , pop a 22 barell on it and drop the power level down on the dials use a chrome and get it just under 12ft lb's ??
Because the police will turn the power dials up and you will be busted.
@@airgunology so if the police alter the power of my gun then I'm busted ?
So as a law abiding citizen,I have tweaked my gun down in power to shoot a 22 sub 12 and to stay on the good side of the law and the police come along and alter my gun settings to make it illegal then I'm to blame ???
@@davidjohnson5369 I realise this is two years old but no one answered so I will.
Short answer is, yes.
The police may even, and probably will, try different weight pellets to see if the gun goes over sub12.
If it does, you’re in charge of a gun exceeding 12 ft/lbs and will be liable.
Stating that you’re a law abiding citizen isn’t a defence.
Steve the hole in the .22 brass sleeve is smaller than the full power US version, so FX is localising these for the UK market, but they just got the sizes wrong 😂still way too large for 16J setup. 55bar for .22 come on. That’s a German 7.5J setpoint.
If they had got the TP sizes correct in the first place both the hammer spring and regulator could have been set a lot higher. Good for the tuners can milk the owners 😭
...what about the barrels, was the FX smootwist so revolutionary good that it had to be updated/abruptly discontinued? 😜
Yes correct, but these Sub 12 ft lb barrels are not available for the FX Crown and hence the problem
weweko kowe
Can l get more than 7.5J in German???
Hi you were right about the barrels it's the same barrel for fac or sub 12ftbs mine was bought as 177 sub 12ftbs and I've just chronograph the .22 barrel bloody 14fbs with 16 grain pellets so the only way I could use it is adjust the hammer spring so when the weel is on max it's sub 12ftbs f*****g crap
Sorry hence the video. Many people out there are ilkegal. FX and importers knew this could be the case
The port on that .22 barrel is wrong, sub 12 ftlb FX barrels have a 2mm diameter port, smaller than the .177.
where did you get that 22 barrel. Has it been modified as I was talking about in the video ?
@@airgunology The barrel end was sent to a friend from FX, it is what should be fitted to any UK sourced rifle in .22 calibre.... 2mm transfer port. However if people get there barrels elsewhere, ie Kral etc, fron abroad, they will receive an FAC barrel with a 4mm transfer port.
Regards
John
@@johnowers47 mmmm, interesting. This would be the proper way to sort out the problem. The barrel in question here came direct from the importer of FX into the UK, to a RFD and then was set up as a sub 12 ft lb. I will look more into this
@@airgunology Steve, I forgot to mention these are Impact barrels, but you see my point, if the rifle was set up with the 2mm port to 11.5ft lb .22 cal, the .177 will be around the same ftlb due to its larger port. I don't own a Crown but if the Impact barrels are 2mm port the Crown should be as well.
Yes now corrected, it seems this problem is only on the Crown where the sub 12 barrels are not available and they ship FAC barrels only. This topic is darn confusing with twists and turns everyday trying to work out what is what ;)
thats BS, if ive paid just under £2000 for a airgun and it was making 9 foot pounds i would send it back. you are paying for a gun that is not producing. should be making minimum 11.3, that still gives you a safe margin when using heavier pellets. It is not illegal to adjust the power yourself as long as it is under 12 foot pounds. but at the end of the day you dont want to void your warranty on a very very expensive air gun.
Hey I am just reporting the facts :)
What bar is your regulator set to on .22 sub12 pls
75 I think on this example.
Is that why 10 women has a Michael Gorbachev mark on her head? 🙀 they blamed him? Aka hand wash
question if its leagle requirment to make it not east to adjust a rifle over 12 lb .. how come SMK put a screw at the back of their rifles that adjusts the hammer ans can be done without taking the rifle apart ... iv asked a few people this an their stumped
Several airgun manufacturers came together to bring in anti tamper several years ago, which is not a legal requirement, it was done by the manufacturers. If it were illegal there are many rifles out their, pre anti tamper that can be adjusted. Not all of the manufacturers followed the anti tamper rule. It's not illegal to adjust the power of your airgun, but when you do you should always make sure that it falls within the legal limit and use a chronograph. Different pellets can make as much difference as 2 ft/lbs through the same rifle barrel, so most manufactures choose to go on the low side of 11 ft/lbs or even 10.5 ft/lb to make sure that they don't go well over the legal limit with an efficient pellet.
@@airgunsniper-elite7385 yep my bsa came in at 10.7 lb from new now running 11.75 lb my pulsar only runs 11 lb but cant do nothing about that at the moment due to the way the rifle works ...
thanks for the explanation on anti tamper. I could not remember the full details.
Yes the Artemis M30 has a screw where you can change the regulator easily. But you can also easily damage the rifle. See below about anti tamper.
Are we tried this
Yes a big silver disc at back with a screw in it
We stripped it down as well
Ok not to tec its as Steve said applies to all importers
They set HS to max
Then in SMK they set
The regulator valve to only allow air to fill plem to give 11.5 at mussel so if you increase HS tension the
Mussel energy stays the same increasing more will take energy down the only way round it is to have access to both HS and Regulator but in SMKs the reg is a regulator flow valve can’t be fiddle with in there rifles but can be adjusted on there 700 pistols
We did try a harder hammer spring and found to are astonishment they had built in a safety to stop this the first shot we fired dumped a full tube of air straight out the barrel brown trouser job all round
To have this safety on a relevantly cheap rifle is excellent
I think when hammer hit air valve head the strength of the new hammer spring pushing down on it must have kept air valve open and regulator flow valve
We still talk about it today think the rifle was a M3 type one of the first pcp batches
Ummm... Steve? That word you like to use -castrate - you might want to find another word. Your making some of us guys sort of squirm a bit here. Yeah_ a different word would go well for us here. Or maybe a phrase - 'CUT DOWN THE POWER' maybe? ;-) Some of the gals listening have this funny smile on their faces, though. Just sayin' buddy.
LOL :) yeah a bit dramatic, but gets the point across :)
Cant you go 177 to 22 then?
If the 177 is just under 12ftlb, then no as the .22 will be over with a simple barrel and probe change. You could need a "proper" 12ftlb 22 barrel which I don't think exist. The only way you can do it is by detuning via dials, but then the police "could" turn the dials back and put you back over. Hence the issue
@@airgunology ah fair enough, not going to lie I wouldn't actually want to risk having a rifle exceeding 12lbft without an FAC. Seems silly though if it turned out to be that easy getting a rifle above the limit
Can l get more than 12 ft/d in uk?
If you have a fire arms certificate from the police (FAC)
Steve Allan
What the terms?
Look on the UK government websites for FireArms Certifications.
No
Hi
Just by it in 177 and swap to 22 and you are unlegal too ! You have to crono ! Same if you change spring in a springer ! Always chrono your gun if you want to be legal
won't work. Buy in 177 and drop in a 22 barrel and the 22 barrel will be illegal. Get caught at a range or shooting and it is a firearms offence, serious problems and rifle taken away from you to be destroyed.
Hello.model of scope?Discovery?buy to aliexpress?
Well covered, wonder how many people will now buy something else.

"FX don't like the UK". I don't like FX - I buy local; AA, Daystate, BSA etc. FX will not earn my dosh.
Shame, they do make good rifles.
Stick to are own countries rifle makers there the best in the world
I never heard so much crap in all my life , All people have to do is tune the regulator along with hammer spring on max and front valve adjuster on max if they have it those parts , easy! in each Caliber you tune to sub12 , any one changing barrels should own a chrono and be responsible, god 😔
Well........I'm still your friend, I still want a FX Crown though in .177 will wup the ass of any Cricket owners!!!!
in your dreams, cricket will knock the spots off your smooth twist barrel

So if they first sell you a .177 and then sell you a .22 the company is breaking the law? Maybe a lawsuit or reporting them will force them to sell a .22 tweaked barrel
true, and technically yes they are breaking the RFD law, but I am sure they have a get out clause and it is you ultimately responsible. The problem is they will sell you the barrel, but no on the gun, so they can claim they didn't sell you an illegal rifle.
