    • @Coolist

Travel agents are for people not knowledge enough to make accommodations on their own.
Also, and obviously, the price of the ticket is innocuous, the point was the Cabo flight was three times more than the Cancun flight on the exact day, exact airport, exact airline, exact time, and exact seat. The point of the entire chapter was a comparable one / how Cabo is becoming the most expensive city in Mexico
      .
Anyone that has traveled more than twice knows that travel prices swing wildly. You booking mgm grand on New Year's Eve for $800 a night, and then me telling you that I paid $75 in the middle of February for the same room would be annoying, and completely irrelevant, right? Right.

Some tips were accurate (props on safety), but as a local, you were incorrect about a few things.
    1) Most importantly, there are several swimmable beaches in Cabo. The Pacific side is dangerous, but along the Sea of Cortez (where all the action is) everyone is in the water - including small children.
    2) Transportation from the airport can be very affordable. First, there is a shuttle bus that is dirt cheap (maybe not the most pleasant option). Or, you can hire a private driver at several different price points. Also, Uber picks up at the OXO just near the airport exit. Uber is very affordable in Cabo.
    3) I would not advice anyone to use those shitty dollar ATM machines on the marina; they screw you over on fees. Look for machines that our branded by a major bank like Citibanamex, BBVA, HBC, or Scotiabank. Some are better than others, but many give out dollars or pesos. Don’t be afraid of pesos, either. You can always exchange/deposit them at your bank if you have extra when you return home. Of note, many places only take cash and NEVER HAVE CHANGE, so break down large bills so you have lots of small bills for tipping and such.
    4) Marine layer is very seasonal. I hardly ever see a marine layer.

Cabo is not on the Sea of Cortez. Cabo is on Pacific. The East Cape is not Cabo. About the dangerous water and beaches which are fully exposed to the Pacific swells, my mother's friend lost her two children to a rogue wave that dragged them out from where they were playing in sand some distance from the water line. The beaches of Cabo can be dangerous even if you are not in the water!

We go to Cabo for a month every year. Hear are some more tips..
    1. DO NOT use the cashola ATM machines by the marina or anywhere else. we had a friend who had a lot if extra $ taken out of his bank account when he did! only use bank atms
    2. There are so many Great beaches on the Sea of Cortez side! some with excellent snorlking, like Chilleno beach, BTW all the beaches in Baja Sur are open to the public
    3. Do consider renting condo from VRBO or air BNB.. you can get great deals and be in a community. Some have their own bars and restaurants
    4. Best sushi: Tiki Bar at the marina, Best tacos: Asi Asado on the corridor just a bit south east of Walmart , and local taco places too

We stayed at Riu & Los Tesoro at marina. Tons of great local restaurants off the beaten path that are budget friendly. We can't wait to get back. The beach waves facing lands end are ferocious...but there are many spots along the corridor between the Cabos where swimming and snorkeling is possible. Highly recommended this destination 👌👍 I can't imagine going anywhere other than Mexico now that we have discovered it. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦.

Surprised no one mentioned this. I loved my 2 months in Cabo but... I got an ear infection twice. I only swam at Medano Beach. Beautiful water, very safe, restaurants right there. A local said that the sewage system is not so great up above in the local area. When it rains, water flows down to the sea and the bacteria count skyrockets. Don't know if it's true but that was the only time in my life I got an ear infection. I dove in the area not far from the Marino (forget the name of the beach) and had no problems there. Although I actually saw this guy take of his suit, poop in his underwear and then shake it out in the water. He was European, who knows...

I ended up spending $650 in business class one way to Cabo, $400 in economy from Cabo and a copay of 15,000 AA miles to upgrade to business class on the way back home. Also, do your research on all inclusive resorts you wanna stay at. Sometimes you can get good deals depending on when you go.

As a strong swimmer with lots of open ocean experience, I wouldn't presonally worry for myself, but for those who aren't so, yes, those beaches are dangerous.

    13. Cabo is a desert; Vallarta and Cancun are tropical forests.
The same cool ocean current that dominates Southern California's climate flows all the way down to the tip of Baja where it dissipates with warm water from the Sea of Cortez. The big difference between the regions is that SoCal's winter rainy season rarely reaches that far south. Cabo's sparse 8 inches of annual rain comes from brief, intense, late summer tropical storms.

We use our air miles every year for Cabo and fly through Alaska. Even without the miles we would pay $500 or less from Seattle to Cabo per person. That’s anytime between June to December. We just choose when the rates are better.

on the Uber point - i'm not sure if something has changed recently..
yes, you can't get picked up from the airport via Uber (drop off is okay), but you mentioned not being able to get picked up from your hotel via Uber?
i've stayed at several different hotels in the past year including the The Cape and the RC Reserve and had no issues getting picked up or dropped off via Uber.
sidenote on the RC Reserve, not sure if you plan to come back to Cabo later and do a luxury property run, but i know you'd love it @ the RC Reserve. high marks for customer service (up there with Japan), and the campus, facilities, fit and finish they have is AMAZING. will definitely be back.

Great tips. Just got back. Mixed feelings. Cabo was recently rated most expensive town in Mexico. If you don't know your way around you will drop $$. We were shocked by the resort meal prices. Some restaurants are fair, maybe $100-$150 for two. Uber works well. Resort transport from airport very expensive when private. Also, the small pharmacies have some fake medicines!!

    1. Airport transfers. You didn't mention the shared shuttles that can be booked ahead of time, stop at a number of hotels throughout Cabo, and cost around $38.00 round trip.
    1. I don't know where you're coming from, but from Reno you can book a round trip, non-stop flight in advance for $450.00.
    2. It is true that the U.S. dollar is widely accepted in Cabo. I just came back from there and used only U.S. money - no pesos and no credit or debit card. Occasionally, you will receive change in pesos, which you can apply to another purchase, or tips, etc.
    3. I did not use ATM's, but every other travel video I have seen warns against using any ATM, other than the official bank ATMS, not the random, independent ones on the street..
    4. Although swimming is not allowed on many, if not most beaches, there are some beautiful ones where you can swim, snorkel, etc.

His "no swimming" statement is FALSE. Depends totally on where you choose to stay. There are tons of swimmable spots on the Sea of Cortez side. The resorts that front the Pacific have the strong undertow beaches. Been going down at least annually since 1998. There are great swimmable beaches: Medano, Chileno, Santa Maria, El Tule, Hilton/Melia, Palmilla, Costa Azul, Puerto Los Cabos.

One can catch a bus for 80 pesos right outside the airports doors to Cabo San Lucas. That was $4.00. It's takes about an hour but just sit back and enjoy the sights on the ride in. There are some nice hotels for less that $150 a night that include a free breakfast buffet that was excellent. For me and the GF easily a $15 buffet so there's a savings of $30 everyday. Restaurants along the harbor are very competitive if one simply walks and shops around a bit.

About the dangerous water and beaches which are fully exposed to the Pacific swells, my mother's friend lost her two children to a rogue wave that dragged them out from where they were playing in sand some distance from the water line. The beaches of Cabo can be dangerous even if you are not in the water!
