On my first playthrough, at the beginning of the game, I had unequipped my silver sword, unaware that steel did more damage to beasts, humans, and nonhumans and silver did more damage to monsters. I literally fought the damn Griffen with a shortsword or poniard, and somehow won, without preparation. Don't ask me how, I don't even know either. Then I saw that Silver Swords did more damage than steel ones, and I decided to use the silver sword against a bandit camp. Won again, and but this time I had potions and bombs and a goddamn crossbow. Crossbows, man, the most useful tool that a witcher has. Can shoot flying enemies out of the sky, stagger enemies on the ground, also the bolts are amazing. A tracking bolt, exploding bolt, armor-piercing bolt, and the such. I'm currently running around in full heavy armor, with an elven crossbow, level 26 silver sword, and the sword gifted to you by the father of the Jarl.
