Incredible speech, again a tremendous presentation. Douglas MacArthur might be one of the most interesting Americans of all times. Yet there’s that dichotomy always hanging over his legacy. The end run to Inchon was brilliant but instead of throwing down the anvil and bypassing Seoul to cut off the broken and routed DPRK Army. What does he do he goes into Seoul, it’s great political move liberating the allied capital before the 3rd month anniversary of the war. It’s arguable that the ROK forces alone could have walked into North Korea at that point and China might not have intervened. There’s a lot a agree with MacArthur about & there’s a lot I disagree. He was a brilliant operational planner but stumbled at the lower tactical levels. As WW2 passes from living memory a more nuanced view of MacArthur is just beginning to take shape. There’s criticism he gets that he doesn’t deserve and there’s accolades he gets that he doesn’t deserve. Perhaps his best moments are largely unknown despite how pivotal they were to modern history. I appreciate this program for wading into the polarized legacy that is MacArthur and taking a fresh look at it. MacArthur was a brilliant American who’s worst enemy could often be himself, the human is more interesting and important than the legend.
