I just saw this and even if it's been a long time this post I tell you wow! I bow down to your awesome guitar lesson. Take time to teach us this beautiful song. THANKS
Damn I remember struggling to learn this from the vinyl in high school when it came out. Hundreds of times picking up the tonearm and moving it back and straining your ear to try to figure out exactly what he was doing. I still think that is the best way to learn. Except for the vinyl part. Great lesson. Thank you.
Actually, if you listen closely, the chord at the 1:53 mark is A-string: open; D string: 10th fret, G-string: "12th" fret; B-string: open; and he hits the high E string open, a little delayed as he arpeggiates that chord.
Wow! I swear LAST NIGHT I decided to try to remember this and I struggled. I woke up this morning and here it is. Great lesson and thanks for all you do. You are simply the best.
At 3:30 the bend should a perfect 1/2 step from F# to G. And the second note in the riff is in open D string. Better to play a G note than trying to bend from the F#.
Sometimes I think I know a song, and then I watch one of your lessons and realize I have it all wrong (not always!). Thanks for setting me straight on this one!
So...I just watched in the beginning from OfficialGregLake published in 09. In the very first few notes it looks as if he never leaves the three fret block of 10,11,12. Not criticizing, just wondering what notes he's using. I have small hands and snausages for fingers so; the less movement for me the better, lol
Hi, nice flatpicking. At 2:05 - G should be on 12 instead of 9. That also counts for the repeating chord in the verse e.g. at 3:10. The riff e.g. at 6.33 where you need to pull the lower E string from F# to G, you play an open A, which should be an open D. Anyway, thanks for posting, cause it's one of the best songs ever written.
Lake has played it SO many times with some cool variations in there...right hand very important too here. Thanks for sharing. Still You Turn me on, Lucky Man...Father Christmas ...all good stuff
I came back to this video to relearn the fast lick. Your videos are still some of the best out there. I hope you and the wife's health are both well and you just tired of the drama. You are missed. Stay well
I still get goosebumps when I hear this song on the radio. Thank you for your demonstration, and your teaching style is superb. It's nice to be able to finally play this song correctly. If only my fingers would cooperate more!
Thank you for not complicating things, just showing where to put your fingers. That's all we beginners really need to know. Some of us can play and some of us can't, I'm somewhere in the middle, but we all want to know one simple thing... where we should put our fingers. Your intuitive teaching style tells me you were once a beginner, too. Thank you for remembering us! 🎸💖
Live he played the intro around the 9th,10th, 12th frets bending the B slightly at the 12th to create the slur. Much easier to sound right. The hardest part of the tune is the arppegiated picking throughout.
Super. After that strange E chord near the machine head rings out, he holds a note and wavers it between the held finger and the next note up.It takes 2 fingers and if you listen to the studio version you'll hear what I mean. It's corny/cool and you should add it. Thanks for a great song! Next do Karn Evil Nine,1st Impression.Just kidding. Thanks again.
Yes I do this. Just tuck the pick into your palm and grab the low E + octave 2nd fret on D and trill to E sharp. Or F if you prefer. Then back to the bend which needs to done from the 2nd fret up to a perfect 5th with the open D as described above by Crux. Great lesson, thanks!
Thanks so much for this James. I used to play this one years ago but completely forgot how, so this is a perfect refresher.... And that harmonic strum thing at the start is like a time machine to me - sends me right back to high school, listening to Dayton's great FM prog station WVUD...
That is a beautiful looking and wonderful sounding guitar. The tone & projection are incredible. I just read up on it… Is the official model name a “SJ”-200? May I please ask what year your guitar is? Is it a Standard or a Custom model? Thank you !
It's like muteing the strings while you strike them, and then lifting your fingers back off. You barely need any pressure on them then let of. Don't push the strings all the way down at all.....does that make sense?
Hey James, great work. On the signature note lick, F#->G I play first a D note (open D) and the an open A. But I have to say, I've been screwing around with that last run for ages, thx for showing how. Maybe you could do 'Still... You Turn Me On' at some point, there's one or two chord shapes I'm missing (the ones I use sound okay, but they're not right...) Any thx again, you have really revived my playing. I'm even getting my Larrivee J10 fixed after like 18yrs of having a cracked top...
Now I want a J-200, ha ha. I had to use me old Eko Ranger, excellent lesson and I was able to pick it up easily, thank you so much.
I listened to this song while on a road trip with my daughter. This song takes me to that moment and now I can try to play it too!! Thank you!!
Excellent my friend
Happy (edit: belated) 10th anniversary of privettricker, James. Here's to 10 years more!
Looks like a Gibson SJ-200, same as Greg's, And Tom Petty's, and Elvis's and many other famous artists.
Thanks James, it's really helpful 👍👌
it is D after bending the E string instead of A at 3:33
thanks, man
Thanks...Good work
Your J-200 sounds amazing! What are the back and sides made of?
Maple!
'ppreciate ya
I think the first chord in the verse is D-10 and G-12.
He did it that way live, but the studio recording doesn’t sound like that to me.
@@jamesjames9275 No worries...I just found your channel. I was amazed at how may videos you post. Impressive.
the last riff was hard for me to get clean,
YES! Thank You. I'll have to go over it multiple times because, "There might have been things I missed."
Nice.

I bought a new acoustic guitar just to learn this old hippie song I’m obsessed,it may take me years but I’m having fun listening and learning 🌳
I was with a guitar in my lap and wondering what song should i learn, thank you for that. Cheers from Brazil
Here's to Greg, The Arpegginator" I think that chord at 7:28 is something like a Bm7♭5 weird chord.
Gives me cramps. Great job.
Sometimes I think I know a song, and then I watch one of your lessons and realize I have it all wrong (not always!). Thanks for setting me straight on this one!
I have always loved this tune! You have put in my reach for me to play it well enough to impress my friends.
I thought I had a great year but how in the hell did you figure this out?
Thank you for this really great lesson! Always struggled with this one...
Wow it’s not as hard as it sounds great lesson
Thanks for your job. Very easy to follow.

I've seen him do the intro differently onstage, as well as some of the chords.
Your guitar sounds great! And thanks for sharing this. I’ve always wanted to learn this tune.

I believe he played that first chord with G on 12 in live versions, but I don't hear it that way on the studio recording.
Thanks for this lesson. Others, including I, only play harmonics in the intro phrase on the G, B, and E strings. Check it out and see what you think.
This was easier than thought. i learned it in a jiffy. Thanks so much James!
Lake has played it SO many times with some cool variations in there...right hand very important too here. Thanks for sharing. Still You Turn me on, Lucky Man...Father Christmas ...all good stuff

well done. i could not get the intro. but now i can. It's all clear.
Bend at the 2nd then at the third fret then hit the A string
I still get goosebumps when I hear this song on the radio. Thank you for your demonstration, and your teaching style is superb. It's nice to be able to finally play this song correctly. If only my fingers would cooperate more!
nice job with a great old tune. Is that a J-200?
Should be Bend F# then open D ( not open A) then bend F# to open A. Right?
Most beautiful pickguard I dun ever saw! GREAT tone I love this guitar and the lesson is great too!
Great song and great lesson. Been on my bucket list for years. Never can get all of it...
Start with low E, then harmonics only with G-B-E
damn man. That J2 is a keeper! What a fantastic sounding ax! Thank you for the lesson!
Who was doing this lick first, Steve Howe, from (Yes) or Greg Lake (ELP) because the 2 sound very familiar?
From the Beginning was written first, but Roundabout was released first.
Great and talented band. Thanks for the lesson.
Damn, I miss seeing you and your lessons.

One of my favorite songs of all time. 🎼🎶🎶🎶🎶🎵🎵🎵
So nice and concise
Thank you

He did some interesting variations on the live versions.
Great lesson, thanks.

try D string 2 to 3.. waver is a good term

Great lesson James
Much more accurate then the way I've been playing it, time to revise, thank you for posting.
Great song and great lesson “good luck”!
Revisiting this with my new SJ200. Thanks for the inspiration!
Love it this song. Thanks
Good job dude.
Excellent!
Thanks
Think its awesome that this younger people are jamming on the music that i grew up on very cool 😎
Great vid, very helpful. Those fret markers don't half put me off though.
Hey all
Ha! I've been doing it all wrong -for 20-years! Thanks, James, you're the best!
Thanks so much for this James. I used to play this one years ago but completely forgot how, so this is a perfect refresher.... And that harmonic strum thing at the start is like a time machine to me - sends me right back to high school, listening to Dayton's great FM prog station WVUD...
Great lesson, thank you! Is your guitar a Gibson Hummingbird?
That’s a J200.
That is a beautiful looking and wonderful sounding guitar. The tone & projection are incredible.
I just read up on it…
Is the official model name a “SJ”-200?
May I please ask what year your guitar is?
Is it a Standard or a Custom model?
Thank you !
sweet, really appreciate these great lessons
The intro reminds me of Roundabout. Think Greg Lake used a J-200 on a lot of stuff. He also was a big Zemaitis user.
A delightful lesson as usual! Thank you for posting. If you don't mind me asking, what acoustic guitar is this?
Gibson J200.
James James Awesome thanks!
@@jamesjames9275 if I ever go acoustic this will be it!! I bet there not cheap.....
single string intro has a Roundabout vibe - the harmonic to the descending lick. Not for nuthin
hey hey j. j. nice nice nice always a pleasure best wishes and many many thanks you are the best you are so kind good on ya mate!
Great song, and a great lesson. I will have to check out the rest of your channel. Thank You
Thanks for your encouragement, this one is a challenge that I am working on. You have been very helpful and I have a trk if your ever moving
Beautifully Done . I can use one word to describe this as --- Magnificent !!
Thanks very much, great lesson on the into. You made it very easy to learn. Thanks again.
Great lesson-bang on .Never clocked how similar the intro is to Roundabout.
Very good. The only song of ELM that I like.
OMG another beauty and a great lesson , I love this style.G.B and thanks a bunch .
Giant hug from Olympia WA!! Thanks so much.
And to parallel my other comment, thank you for the lesson! I see some of what I am getting wrong!
Thanks for the lesson one day I’ll play this
Favored of mine 😎thanks
Great teaching.. well done!!
Superb! Thank you!👏👏👏👏👏👏
This helps alot, thanks James!
Cheers dude !Great job as always .
Thanks....great song
is there any trick on how hard to fret the 1st harmonic at the 12th fret. I'm having difficulty with that. 😓 Thank you for this lesson BTW 👍
It's like muteing the strings while you strike them, and then lifting your fingers back off. You barely need any pressure on them then let of. Don't push the strings all the way down at all.....does that make sense?
Ini di beningin
Hey James, great work. On the signature note lick, F#->G I play first a D note (open D) and the an open A. But I have to say, I've been screwing around with that last run for ages, thx for showing how. Maybe you could do 'Still... You Turn Me On' at some point, there's one or two chord shapes I'm missing (the ones I use sound okay, but they're not right...) Any thx again, you have really revived my playing. I'm even getting my Larrivee J10 fixed after like 18yrs of having a cracked top...
I should clarify -- F#->G D F#->G A instead of the F#->G A F#->G A if that's any clearer
What chords do you need from 'Still... You Turn Me On'? Maybe I can help.
Thanks.
👍 thank you.
Thanks.
At 2:04 it should be "G at 12" not "G at 9".
If you listen thru the whole video you'll understand why he does that.
Another great lesson for a cold afternoon with no football to watch. Thanks James you've once again made a cold Sunday afternoon awesome!
Not exactly right but pretty close.
The world is an imperfect place...
