    I always appreciate your reviews Sam. They come from the usability perspective in the real world...not hype to placate the manufacturer. I like the machine but will definitely wait until the S2 or S1 Pro comes out to see if they address any of your concerns. For now I'll continue with my D1 Pro and newly acquired F1 (because of your reviews/tutorials on it) 😀

      @@SamcraftcomFor the record…..I just bought the S1. ❤. Question, I also bought your test files on Etsy, I assume I start by not adjusting the laser settings just yet on the files? I’m writing down the settings you used during this video to get me in the ballpark. I also have the riser base on the way with honeycomb as well on the way. I’m trying to not score the crumb tray as I am a bit anal retentive about doing that to keep it clean looking. I’ve heard if I use a silicone sheet on the bottom that will eliminate me scoring the crumb base..Any truth to that? Would love your advice. I did buy a piece of galvanized steel from Lowe’s to use as my sacrificial bottom. Not sure that will work? Love your channel and maker items. Keep up the great info!

    This was very helpful. This is such an upgrade in so many ways from my FSL . That probe is better than using the little rubber disc I had to use. I’m not going to use this for major production…more hobby laser. You made many great points. I appreciate your honesty. You have had lasers that are better. It’s hard to go back….but with the boat anchor I have, this looks like a breeze. The last time I updated, I had a 100 ft Ethernet cable that I had to run to my basement! Camera didn’t work half the time…focusing was a nightmare. This looks like a dream. Thanks

    Sam, you so rock. I've been wishing I had the funds for this, but just spent $1800 on the the D1 Pro 20W with with every bell and whistle. Now I feel better about what I have. Might just upgade my 20W to 40W in the future, but what my machine does now is perfect for me. So, thatbks for the help in realization. Again, you rock.

    I love your reviews Sam. I noticed the honeycomb movement and since I was just fighting with the honeycomb on the laser I bought based on watching you use the Ortur, (it is currently driving me crazy). I watched another youtuber (Andy Bird Builds) reviewing the WeCreat (I thought I saw on your counter), and am watching some other reviews as it looks like it has the features I am looking for (other then the pass through). But I am just getting into the laser engraving hobby, I will probably wait a bit to play with the machine I have before upgrading, but your reviews have helped me narrow down some of the things I now know I want in my next machine.

    I’ve watched every S1 review and you did the best one! Thank your for mentioning No Camera as a CON! That is the single reason why I’m not getting it. I bet they come out with an add-on camera module. I also agree about the autofocus and having to grab the laser module and having to move it so much. What I like about your reviews is that you’re not afraid to mention things you don’t like about what you’re reviewing, unlike other reviews that gush over whatever they’re given for free. Thanks Sam!

    • @TheLumberJacked
      @TheLumberJacked 6 місяців тому

      The camera is cool, but I’ve seen too many P2 videos showing people centring everything and it’s still off centre after the burn which tells me the camera system, while good isn’t integrated enough to be THE killer app. An example of proper integration would be doing something like the Shaper Origin system does where the camera is indexing to a physical code placed on a surface. This would allow the system to correct the camera if it’s not mounted exactly and therein lies the issue with the P2. People seem to get varying results with the camera because it’s too simplistic and doesn’t have a way to auto correct through some procedure. Until then…letting you mark it easily yourself as seen on the S1 will always yield more accurate results. The new additions to that feature let you mark multiple objects at different angles but with absolute accuracy.
      As of now, it’s the only sure way to get accurate setup on these types of machines. Not having to manually jog the steppers is also a win IMHO.

    Great Video Sam - I appreciate those that tell it how it is
    I was excited the hear Xtool announce a new laser But for all the reason you mention that turn to dismay - Surely they saw what improvements many user of D1 were adding to make the machine productive
    I think a Roly LaserMaster might be my upgrade path appear to be great build quality with useful and well thought out functions also all in one package for the cost of S1 Base Machine

    Awesome review as usual Sam. I mentioned during the live I was waiting for your review because you show real world jobs, and you tell us things you do not like from a working day to day perspective. Others often seem to be adverts and nothing is wrong or annoying. For the honeycomb I have seen some (Clack Shack?) who had a master jig into which his working jigs fit. This automatically aligns the jigs and laser (D1). I think the D1 fit into it also, so it was super accurate. I think you could produce a spacer jig that would work.

    Thanks for a great and in depth review. To me you are the go to guy for hobby lasers. I've been watching the Xtool D1 for a long time but by the time I get all the things I need for it (enclosure, riser kit, air assist, honeycomb etc) I'm not far from one of these with a metal enclosure that is durable and very fire retardant. That said I'm waiting on a WeCreat product....we'll see how long that takes to happen. This field sure changes rapidly.

    • @Samcraftcom
      @Samcraftcom  8 місяців тому

      I take that as a huge compliment and will strive to keep such a high status in your mind. :) You are absolutely right regarding the cost of a decked out D1 vs. this S1. I have been testing the WeCreat laser for a while and will have my video on it soon. I can say that I would not put the two machines as comparable side-by-side machines. They're very different.

    Best review I’ve. Seen yet. But I knew it would be. Your detailed and honest. Thanks for a good review. I ha ve problems withe so called pin point positioning. Constantly having to physically move corner to corner I don’t like. I’m a camera guy to. It is a tremendous asset to a laser and they missed the mark. With all of thes features plus the curve following engraving makes it to where you can’t use Lightburn

    • @Samcraftcom
      @Samcraftcom  8 місяців тому +1

      I'm right there with you re: the positioning feature. And you're right... the advanced features do make it where this machine isn't truly compatible with Lightburn. Thankfully xTool has been very good on improving their software and listening to their user groups for improvement and enhancement requests.

    This review definitely helped. Although I haven’t make a decision, it explains things that aren’t going to be on their website. I’ve been kinda thinking between this and I think it’s the D1 40w/10w. I agree with most of your dislikes. Moving honeycomb is a pain. Keypad on the machine would be great, although I have my computer close to the laser that I have now and my cnc, so not a lot of back and forth. Don’t have a camera so don’t miss that, but I know what you’re saying about if you’re used to it you want it. Sorry about your lid, and yeah you’d think it wouldn’t scratch that easy.
    I like the enclosed feature of this style, especially with the built in fan. I guess my deal is trying to find one that does the most with the materials I want to use. I may have to narrow my ideas of what I want to work with a bit. Anyway, that’s for the informative video and hope the machine works well for you.

Which brings a question to mind…when you are moving the laser head by hand are you having to go slow to keep from generating a current?and re your caseI bet you could use some buffing compound to get them out ? Or depending on what kind of plastic very carefully barley hit it with a torch and you may get it to clear up again.

    Thank you for the time and effort to make this video. Do you know if the laser is still Class 1 certified when using the riser base? I believe I read it is not considered Class 1 with the conveyor, but I am wondering if it is when just using the riser base. Thanks.

    • @Samcraftcom
      @Samcraftcom  8 місяців тому

      With the riser base it is so close to being Class 1, but there is a bit of laser light leakage in the back. Nothing up front or on the sides though! Maybe there was a gasket I forgot or didn't get, but it's there in the back. It could easily be fixed with foam tape though.

    Check out Joshua De Lisle's latest review on that machine...He didn't get the riser base and he was not happy ... No camera and the supplied software were his BIG complaints. The honey comb bed movement was on his hate list too. Check his reviews BUT you did a great review.

    • @DavZell
      @DavZell 8 місяців тому +2

      I think your description makes that review sound worse than it was. Josh went through a laundry list of superlatives at the end. His key issues included two that are addressed by existing add-ons: risers and extension. He wants a camera because he's used to it, though some other reviewers have said they like the S1's positioning options better, so it may be a personal opinion-type thing. Josh also wishes all the features of S1 were available in Lightroom, which would be nice. The same issue exists for the F1. I don't know how easily manufacturers can get their specific features supported, which would be interesting to know. Josh also said he had some connectivity issues. He didn't mention if he was wireless or wired. On an F1 and D1 I've not had issues connecting via USB. Perhaps these early machines have early firmware or software. I didn't see this mentioned in other reviews yet. Let's hope it's not common.

      I keep seeing comments about the S1 not being compatible with Lightburn, but guys, xTool is not the owner of Lightburn. If the S1 doesn't work perfectly with Lightburn, shouldn't that be Lightburn's issue? Do you want a machine that can perfectly connect with Lightburn but lacks any innovative features? No, thank you!
      Lightburn's development is too slow; it can't keep up with the new features these companies are developing.

      If you purchase an xTool machine, stick with their software (xTool Creative Space). It is feature packed and many of the new machines with advanced features only work with the XCS software. Lightburn is the universal standard software, but does not have support for all the bells and whistles found on the new xTool machines.

  • @Martina1192

    Sam, a question- I already bought D1Pro 20W back in August. But, even when I was buying it, it wasn’t quite what I wanted. I liked enclosure and camera of M1, but didn’t want 5 or 10 W and don’t need a cutter. I love capabilities, camera and enclosure of P2, but don’t like the size, too big, and CO2 description intimidates me, and definitely can’t afford the price. So, I really wanted D1 Pro 20W size and capability, and doing wood is my main interest, but didn’t like no enclosure and no camera and especially the fact it doesn’t come assembled.
    So I did buy enclosure for it, in fact the whole bundle with air assist, RA2, honeycomb…. But, never even opened the boxes. That assembly still intimidates me most of all.
    Then I see S1, and it looks so much more like what I wanted, especially the enclosure and coming assembled. I do still wish it had a camera, but its system still looks pretty good, plus a few other nice features, like better focusing and doing curves.
    I’m too late to return the D1, plus with restock fee and shipping back, it’s not a good thing to do.
    But, I’m sooooo tempted to just buy S1, and sell my D1 locally. And id probably then just go with 40W. I also already have F1 which I love, so wouldn’t need IR module and probably not 20W when they bring it separately too.
    As to why I want it, mainly for making gifts for friends and family, and selling just a little locally to cover some of my expenses.
    With all of my reasoning above, between all the machines, what do you think?? Is S1 the answer?? I’d really appreciate your answer. Thank you!!!

    • @lamberthugh8316
      @lamberthugh8316 3 місяці тому

      Unfortunately you don't have much choice. If you want to buy a gift for your friends or family, I think a boxed machine (like S1/M1) would be better than an open machine (like D1) as smoke is a big problem.Wecreat might be a good choice, or you could go for the M1 as it has a camera. Using a laser machine is not easy for a novice.

  • @plurmingo1

    ok, so now that you have done your official review, would you buy it for yourself having already used the other machines? or if this was the first one, would you buy it as a starter machine? it sounds like you prefer the d1? or d2? the red one, over this one. I have seen other reviews and there's some kind of 3d engraving that it does, have you tried that yet? if not, will you do one in the future (or is that what the tea box was?) thanks for your input about the machine thus far. I'm still riding the fence on what to buy. Hi Angela 👋.

    From everything I’ve seen. The S1’s targeting system is more accurate than the camera on the P2 or M1. I’ve seen too many videos of people lining up coasters visually on the P2 and the finished product isn’t centred quite right. This will always be an issue with a fixed camera, unless they run some system that can accurately place the item in space while accounting for skewed perspective due to oblique viewing angles tot he camera. But overall the P2 does a great job, the S1 is preferred IMHO.
