As someone who is right now sitting in bed, unable to graduate so far because of anxiety, depression, lack of money, family problems, etc. this commencement actually speaks to me on a deeper level.

wang wang You never ever tell a person suffering from depression to 'cheer up'. It shows you never knew or never went through it yourself.

    wow!
"It is the greatest irony of my life that losing my husband helped me find deeper gratitude - gratitude for the kindness of my friends, the love of my family, the laughter of my children. My hope for you is that you can find that gratitude - not just on the good days, like today, but on the hard ones, when you will really need it....
Build resilience in yourselves. When tragedy or disappointment strike, know that you have the ability to get through absolutely anything. I promise you do."

5:55 You can choose joy and meaning
6:26 Hope, strength, and light within us that won't be extinguished
8:26 What you do next (after adversity) is what matters
9:40 Sometimes we have to live with option B (our 2nd choice)
10:25 Personalization is when we think things are our fault
    11:30 Don't take failures personally
11:35 Pervasiveness is when we think a failure will affect other areas of our life
12:25 Think of other things in your life that AREN'T awful (think of good)
13:29 Permanence is when we think sorrow will last forever
13:57 Accept your feelings, and know they won't last forever
15:06 You're not terrible at everything just because you're terrible at something
    15:39 Sometimes it's not you. It's them
16:41 Think about how WORSE things could be (if you think things are really bad)
    17:30 Find gratitude and appreciation
18:50 How would you live if you had 11 days left?
19:16 Realize how precious every day would be

21:08 Instead of focusing on what I did wrong, I focus on the day's joy
    21:37 Find gratitude
22:26 Live each day with joy and meaning
22:45 You have the ability to learn and grow
23:00 Figure out who you are and become the best YOU

23:47 We're stronger than we ever imagined
24:17 Speak up. When you see things are broken, fix them

I really love the part of when her friend told her about the conception of things could've been worse, then she realized that she still have healthy children, family and caring friends. And unlike other single mothers or fathers, she's more than capable of dealing with potential financial problem. Always be grateful, and knowing that you're lucky every single night when you sleep in a cozy bed.

Be grateful every day. Very good. When one is grateful, it's usually in relation to another person, no? She is grateful to her family and friends and rabbi for their support and love. Who is she grateful to that her husband didn't have a cardiac arrhythmia while driving her kids in the car? Who is she grateful to for each breath she takes each moment of every day? You can't be grateful to chance for all the gifts of this life. That doesn't make sense.

1:8-1:10 Could you please tell me, what is meaning of 'with all the hair', 'Man buns'. She said : Back then, people used to say with all the hair, " How do we even tell the men from the women?" Today we know the answer. Man buns. In the dictionary, a bun is kind of hair style, but it doesn't make sense. and 'with all the hair' is that meaning of a lot of hair? I'm studying English from this beautiful and moving commencement speech.

    • @davidjackson7281
      @davidjackson7281 2 роки тому +1

She was attempting to make a joke about how some men with long hair now put their hair up in a little back of head bun which some people think does not look so good. This contrast with males who had long hair in the sixties when other people at that time did not think men should have long hair like females because, as they joked at the time "how can you tell them apart". Thus, five decades later society still opines on appearances.
Berkeley has the well-deserved reputation of being open-minded vs. old fashion. I guess I might know, I was there then. I hope this wasn't a confusing explanation for you i.e., "clear as mud".
As a side note, it seems during the Free Speech Movement of the sixties the left was protesting because they felt the right was obstructing their 1st Amendment rights. Now the left has flipped it by Antifa preventing the right's right to free speech. How hypocritical, pathetic, ironic, and dangerously sad. The tormented have become the tormentors. And this at Berkeley. Mario Salvio would not approve and is rolling over in his grave. Good luck with your English.

No offense. Her speech technique is wonderful, appropriate pauses when messages want to be sent. But can someone explain to me what she talked about besides her husband's death? I try to extract the theme to be "survive is more important than success". But in this society full of welfare and assistant from government, the efforts to survive I don't imagine it to be very high when compared to success...

Help from the outside world is necessary but it is the hope you build up from within that can carry you on and help you find true meaning in life. I think the reason that you can't resonate with Sheryl Sandberg is that you've never been through something like that. Sheryl is changing the world by planting the seed of resilience in us. She is one of the greatest person in our time.

    • @deeel8641
      @deeel8641 8 років тому +4

Think about it in a way of hitting "rock bottom." Losing her husband was hitting rock bottom. Getting over it, you can only go up. Main theme was being resilient. That's the shit we need. We don't need some speech saying, you'll be doing this and achieving that. We needed a speech that helps prepare us when things don't go the way we planned.
