plant physiology student perspective here: farmers worldwide are actually overfeeding by over 50%! Though fertilizing is absolutely beneficial and necessary if you don't have constant organic decomposition of leaves etc as in nature, its usually grossly overdone. liquidirt is a micronutrient supplement, and unless you're growing in water the needs for the nutrients in there are in the parts per milllion and will never be your limiting nutrient for growth in soil. in my experience a balanced organic fertilizer like a fish fertilizer has given my plants nutrients in the most accessible form, and growth plateaus when they're getting fertilized more than once a month which is when zones of depletion around the roots would begin to form again.
Loved this. Ageed with you in almost everything, most especially the stealing. No matter what it makes that person a thief. There is no excuse for stealing.
I enjoyed this video immensely Nicky, but on the comment about Thrips not going into soil, I have to correct you (Sorry, I mean this in a nice way). Thrips lay their eggs in the tissues of your plant feeding on the plant as they and after they emerge. They then drop to the soil to pupate, or into the crevices where the bottom of the petioles meet the stem, before turning into adults to start the life cycle again. They can also be found in Pon mixes. When you water your plants from the top they get washed through your soil. Also many people aren't aware they can be in the water of self watering pots, and it's the same for Fungus Gnats. When I have Thrips or Fungus Gnats I water through the medium with the strongest flow of water from my shower or hose leaving to fully drain before placing back onto the saucer or back into the cache pot of a self watering pot. In the case of self watering pots I water them through without leaving any water in the cache pot for 8-10 weeks until I'm sure the cycle is broken. I do a water through with 1 part Hydrogen Peroxide to 3 parts water on the final watering at the end of the 8-10 week period. As soon as I spot Thrips or Fungus Gnats I remove the top 2 inches of soil and replace with fresh discarding the removed soil into a tied up bag and thrown into the bin outside. This has been my experience of observing and dealing with Thrips for nearly the whole of this year and they are definitely the most troublesome of pests to deal with. Also I hope my experience helps others. My biggest bugbears are definitely the stealing/poaching of plants, plants being over watered in nurseries/big box stores and the death plugs from plants grown in plugs. I would like to see more of these videos, they're so fun.
Love this. 9:42 Topic: Pot Size I often downsize pots when they come into my care. Their pots are just a little larger than the space the roots take. The thought process is to allow the roots to feel snug so that energy will be pushed to new growth. It also frees up space. The majority of my plants are in clear pots. Watching the roots grow so happily when they’re on their way to dry makes it clear that they’re needs to be a wet/dry cycle for most plants. Too much soil complicates things.
@@PlantsPotsWhatNots - laughing at my phrasing. Totally sounds like I’m caring for pots 😂 Words are hard. Resisting the urge to sell you on growing plants in no drainage, using soil-less mediums in clear vessels. And… I like soil too, it makes me feel closer to nature, but a lot of our epiphytic plants don’t need it. So… I can’t help but think (or overthink 😜) that using soil isn’t necessarily replicating natural conditions. Can’t wait for the next video (I enjoy every single bitty one)!!!
Oh Nicki, I am so excited that ‘you are back’ lol for some reason, I was unsubscribed 🙄 I’m glad I came to leave a comment and discovered it! Oh yes, I get so much more done when home alone!! I love ‘ YOUR OPINIONS’ lol
Is true and also i feed my plants every watering never had any problem and also my monstera albo i did have a small pot and it was a 1 left cutting i put it in a 7 inch pots and she dong well i used leca or pon as a growth medium
I’ve taken 2 spider plants “dead” pups out of a dirt sweep pile at a Lowe’s didn’t ask just brought them home. I wasn’t sure if they would survive they were so limp, dry and dirty. I was able to revive them and they are beautiful plants. This might offend some and I’m sorry. These pups were in a dirt pile with swept trash looking dry and dead and I was able to bring them back! With that said…I would never take a piece or cutting off a healthy plant, nor would I take a healthy piece/ cutting off the floor.
Awww. You saved it. Lol I don't think anyone would fault you for that hun. It was clearly destined for the bin. I'm so glad you were able to revive them. 👏👏🥰
I agree that Leca doesn’t actually eliminate pests HOWEVER I am able to treat plants more with pesticides/wash off the leaves more since I don’t have to worry about overwatering, so overall I find my Leca plants have less pests. Which is great for spider mite prone alocasias!
Lol I am commenting as I watch! Monstera Delisciosa.. for me… in my opinion .. are 2nd to my golden pothos in ease of care! The only reason I say that is mine grow so fast & large I have to trellis them 🤷♀️ i have 6 right now… because they just won’t die lol I rescued them all from a big box store last year that were living outside in Illinois winter with frost bit leaves…
Hi there Nicki! I stumbled on you trying to save the cissus discolor that I ordered a plug of that arrived pretty doa. Ugh. It’s not doing well. Your cissus is so gorgeous! I know you said it’s not really a begonia, if I had known it was called that, I would not have ordered it. Every begonia I’ve gotten has died and hates me. I have gotten each usually as a side because they’re pretty and I’m trying to meet coupon code or shipping and they do not bounce back from transit. Of course there was a heat wave, and it did go cross country. Any suggestions to save a dead one? Propagate what I can and call it a loss? So frustrating! I swear every time I lose one it absolutely wrecks my self worth, major dramatics over here!
I have many plants in no drainage and in soil- they all do amazing. It makes my life so much easier! Lol both work well, I do both and don’t see a difference in any! When it comes to nature- they do actually absorb water from lower levels, especially without rain! Pretty cool, honestly. My Hoyas would not do well at all in my north windows. Haha I don’t think that a north facing window will have optimal light, even being right in the window.
Pests are a lot easier to treat when they’re in leca/pon/water only because they don’t go through so much shock when they are taken out of their substrate. That’s the only reason I could see it being a semi pro. Lol
Hey girl!! I see you Havnt posted in a year so I hope you get this... LOVE your vids, they're so informational and in a "not boring " way lol. I hear you are in Ontario!! I am also in Ontario and was hoping we could maybe swap socials if you're interested in selling me some clippings or baby's! I've got the plant itch lol
Oh my gosh, what was that plant behind your right, maybe left shoulder? The highly variegated one.🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄❄️💚🙃 Sorry, not sorry, if I confused you. 🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄❄️💚🙃

Not sure why I’m being ghosted. *maybe she got a new phone/number and she is t getting my number. -nah, lol, she’s ghosting me!😜😣

Hope everything is well!
