I think your piece as a whole, (before you cut into strips) would have made a gorgeous journal cover! Fabric snippets always looked so intimidating to me, but you made it look so simple! Thank you!
Murphy's law of sewing....."As you sew, so shall you rip" and ..."if there's anything hanging(even fingernails) the damn thread will ALWAYS find it!!" Love your channel Nb
Wonderful? I love the way you made strips from the rectangle allowing colours and patterns to randomly reappear. Donna knotted up your thread for sure. The only sure fire thing in my day is feed the cat before anything else! Then it's random mayhem for the next few hours. Bit like a snippet strip of life l guess!
I mostly play with paper. I often cut them into particular lengths, like two and three inches, and then use those “snippets” as a focal point on journal cards, pockets, in my journals! It is so fun! You have great suggestions also!
Oh my goodness gracious Nik! I am trying to catch up on some of your videos and just found this one. I am interested in learning how to make these snippets but just had to pause you for a moment to share the thought that just popped into my head. Back in the dark ages my Mom first taught me to iron blouses, skirts, sheets...*sigh*. This was a chore I never liked. Yet here I am watching you iron something you won't even wear! Am I the only one who sees the irony? 😉
Oh my gosh, what a thing of beauty . I made one a few months ago and it was all lace and beads etc , the only thing I had to wrap it on was a very small wooden rolling pin, was about 5inches long . It’s lovely . I like your style though. I’ll be watching for more fro Australia .
I have been watching your work for many months and your style is so cool. I am trying this method tomorrow. Not sure what I will do with it. Maybe display it on my desk at work and see how my co-workers like this. I will give you all the credit if people ask me where I got the idea!! I know I love this.
I like this method. I’ve never made one but want to. I have a lot of fabric! Thanks for sharing. I have to add, the mom at me is screaming and you about the way you use your ruler and rotary cutter. Never, ever roll it toward you. Away is the safest way! ❤️
I don’t think you need to do anything in particular with snippets. They just are. If you make one and do the embellishments and take the time to put your heart into it, what a wonderful gift to give to a special friend. And, like Nik says, you can tie them on a package or anything else you may want to add something extra to.
Great time to practice those embroidery stitches and all kinds of fun when hubby wants action adventure movie and you don’t. But you agree anyway. Cuz tomorrow it’s Little Women for the win! When it’s my turn to choose.
Nik, I like your style - your eye for beauty, AND your relaxed, self deprecation and humour. Your videos are fun and approachable, Enjoyed spending some time with you and your art. For the life of me I cannot see the POINT of a snippet roll, but it works as art, and could be a lovely idea for a gift - or to wrap a gift - that is both stunning and inexpensive - in nearly everything but time! Apart from the Dreaded Dust, I think your ribbon would look great hanging on a wall, or as a picture frame, book mark, notebook cover, etc etc. Actually, if it's robust enough, could make a fantastic belt, or garment edging - though ... Washing. Mind you, up until the 1900's (ish) lace edgings were only ever tacked on petticoats and dresses, because they would be removed before garments were washed so that they could be washed separately. Should still be possible for special stuff, surely, even given the current lack of servants ? :) Fun to play with, but, oh yes, it could be a time suck.
Going to spend today watching some old well not so old videos this is fabulous and thank you for sharing this with me today it’s lovely and so very meaningful. God bless you on this beautiful Resurrection Sunday . May your be filled with making lovely memories of the future your about to make. 🤪🙏🎸✌️
This is an old video, so I don’t know if you even read comments, but HAVE to say my days often feel like your…… nothing goes right!!!!! I love these snippets.
Letting you know that you sound exactly like I did self-sabotaging in every way until I learned to love myself, ROFLMAO, however, if you do not keep up with it with daily practice you can fall back into wondering how in the world self-sabotaging ends up happening to me so very consistently. Found out it is in the way we talk to ourselves in our minds and also out loud, that does that to us. Yeah, I know, WHO knew?? LOL Like you, I could make my frustrations sound funny and there is a secondary benefit to that as most people can relate to frustration but also do not make it sound near as funny. Speaking of FUN... love your punny shirt. I watched another snippet roll maker that layered the fabric to add more texture and depth to the snippets. For instance, she laid pieces of lace overtop the fabric she sewed with a machine down the length of the roll, in the middle to make the snippets stay attached to the base, then sewed with ivory thread down either side of the lace. Then began to add things pictures and words from the designer sheets she printed on some muslin fabric after resizing them on her silhouette and that is where she lost me, as I do not have a silhouette machine. She adheres the fabric to the fabric pictures and words with a zig-zag stitch and then embellished then with glitter fabric paint. " So stinkin cute" and not too frou-frou. Loved it. Love the simplicity and the authenticity of yours lol, as it looks ones women did back when wagon trains rolled updated for tremendous ease of doing it, love the look of yours, which for those women was not such a time suck as they did it one or three pieces at a time and put it away until they had more pieces to work with. Lord knows they had far more to do then we do as they had to go to the creek for water! Be that as it may, I truly do think your snippet roll is lovely. Have fun with the process and it does not seem as much of a time suck... IF you enjoy what you are doing it is not wasted time. Having said that, I have to get back to the project of reclaiming my house from crafting, so thank you for the reminder to be gentler to myself so I self-sabotage less. Back to praising myself for every little thing and remembering that everything happens in "the divine right order", even the time sucks are there to play a role in that. Thanks for the tip with the lightweight iron-on adhesive! I so enjoyed your video! Wrote below as you asked your viewers to if they identified with you. Oh, I so do. My life has not gone as planned, not even close as it blew up a few times. Make a new plan is all I can do and keep my sanity or what passes for it. Just love you, Nik. Thanks again!
This is such a great idea. I cannot wait to give it a go...thank you so much for sharing your ideas and techniques with us. You are one of my biggest inspirations. I love your style!!
Really genius! Love this!!! "...Time suck of epic proportions!" Hahaha!!! Like we really need to go that route this time of year!!! In between the planning, shopping, creating gifts, parties, etc., I think I'll squeeze a 40-hour project in! 😂 😂😂 I will stick to the quick and easy route, thanks Nik! Loved the Franken-paper, and now the Franken-snips! So great, always!!📝📏📖🎄⭐
Love this, Nik! I've made a fabric snippet before, as well as a couple of paper ones (using adding machine tape as the substrate), but I really like your method of starting with a block of collaged fabric as a much quicker way of getting the base done. Thanks so much for all you do and for sharing your beautiful work with us. Seeing a new Nik video posted always brightens my day! Merry Christmas and best wishes for a peaceful and blessed New Year!
Haha, yes Nik, there are days when everything ends up on the floor, how I don't know, I stick, cut or something else happens to my fingers, etc, that's when I yell "ah come on", growl and keep on keeping on! Lol. Of course we are all normal, sooooo craft on because some days it goes well, ah nice. Loved this tutorial, didn't know about these rolls, so knew you'd teach us how!!!!
love love love! You could use as a belly band (much smaller of course) in a vintage journal or just as an element to adorn your journal. I think I would cut them and use with my art. Thank you so much!!!
Another awesome tutorial Nik, my head is buzzing with ideas now with how I can use the fabric, snippet roll thingies😉 Great idea to use up all those little bits and pieces I can never seem to throw away. Thanks for sharing 🙏🌻
This is a great way to make a snippet roll. I have been wanting to make one for ages, but they always look a bit fiddly! Thanks, Nik, for the great idea!
Oh this is cool........I used to make crazy quilt bags, with hand embroidery (ain’t nobody got time for that any more....), this really reminds me of the piece work I would do, but done so much more quickly!!! This is a fun idea!
I love your snippet roll Nik! and 'specially the lily gilding 😬! and a larger version would be awesome wall hanging! P.S. my days never EVER go as planned. AND I am easily sidetracked as well.
I like that you sewed on the picture, I never thought of sewing paper on these, that is great. HAHA! "Epic Time Suck" I am going to never forget that one when I get lost in the "Craft Vortex"
I love this time saving method! I have actually not done any of these snippet rolls yet but I am excited to try this method! Love your videos and your attitude! We all have days .... LOL!
Would love it as a cover...the scanning of it before you cut is a great idea...fun video❤️are you kidding, plans are not in my wheelhouse, but the results are usually rewarding and satisfying ❤️
I like your method, for my larger pieces this makes sense. I have made the larger patched pieces for ribbons and bands, too. This is so pretty, thank you for the inspiration.
Thank you so much Nik, I really really love 💖 your snippet roll, because you are really really stunning man..... and I’ve never seen these things made like you did so your so awesome 😎. xxx Mags
Awesome video and loved no rules man..........Hobby Lobby just had fabric that was like that ticket paper really cute!!! That turned out wonderful love the paper and all the little goodies added to it.!!!! Can't wait to try! Thx for sharing
Wow! I feel like I should’ve thought of this. I love snippets on tags and such but it is time consuming. This is so much easier. This is a great hack. Thanks.
as I watch the trimming process I'm thinking with a scanner, scan the piece before you cut into strips and make some decorative paper first.
I think your piece as a whole, (before you cut into strips) would have made a gorgeous journal cover! Fabric snippets always looked so intimidating to me, but you made it look so simple! Thank you!
You are not the only one. My day never, never, never goes as planned. I'm tangled constantly just like your thread.
Murphy's law of sewing....."As you sew, so shall you rip" and ..."if there's anything hanging(even fingernails) the damn thread will ALWAYS find it!!" Love your channel Nb
This was one of the best tutorials I have seen on ephemera. So organic and time saving.
Never ever do my days go as planned. Those wrenches keep dropping from the sky. Your strips are amazing!
Because I needed another thing to try.... thank you. It's beautiful and I added this to my actual 'journal of things I really want to do'!
That is so gorgeous. I am a quilter and it reminds me a bit of crazy quilting. Love, love, love it! Cool T shirt BTW.
wOoooH! Make a real wide Snippet Roll -Journal Cover!!! .....Book spine!! and Journal pockets! Etc....etc. Small snippets BIG snippets! Love it!!
Fantastic way to use up scraps...so adorable!
I love your shirt! I also love how you take a whole bunch of scraps and somehow put them together into something super beautiful and cohesive.
How beautiful!! I could see pieces of that on note cards, as book marks, in a picture frame❤️❤️❤️
Wonderful? I love the way you made strips from the rectangle allowing colours and patterns to randomly reappear. Donna knotted up your thread for sure. The only sure fire thing in my day is feed the cat before anything else! Then it's random mayhem for the next few hours. Bit like a snippet strip of life l guess!

Brilliant!! I love this!!! My favorite part is when the thread got caught in the charm!! Feels like home to me!
The best laid plans of crafters and moms NEVER ever goes according to plan. I'm living proof. Love this snippet idea!
You're not the only one... twice in two days I've had things 'catch' in impossible ways. AAAGGGHHH!!! LOVE the snippet roll.
Snippets rule as does your shortcut! Beautiful as always. Thanks again for a fantastic down and dirty hack.
Great way to do snippet roll. I love doing it with my grand daughter and let her pick the pieces. She loves doing that… thank yo for sharing.
Lol!! Gild The Lily, Nic! Gild the Lily!!......Love it. You, Ma'am are a Genius!! Inspiration oozes from those there fingers of yours!!

I wrap it around a large vintage wooden bobbin and hang it up
I like this. Anything and everything counts. Everyone has their own technique but yours is my fave. Thanks!
Wow Nic, that bow is never coming off! It's beautiful as usual. X

I love the way you assembled this, im going to try it your way instead of sewing little bits at a time.
Thanks Nick ❤️💋😍🇨🇦🎄⭐️❤️
You really have a knack for creating nostalgic looking pieces. I love all your work.
