Honestly I always thought if Tim Burton directed Batman and Robin and still happened to cast Arnold Schwarzenegger as Mr Freeze he would've given a better performance because he would've had better direction
Hell, even if he still said a pun or two on rare occasions, he still would have worked, as this cynical man who has convinced himself that the apathy of the world towards his wife's fate justifies his crimes against it.
There is one bit from this movie's Freeze that always stuck with me. When he thinks his wife is dead and he sheds a single tear that freezes on his cheek. I think that one bit is actually really good and should have been in a better film.
And also at the end when Batman reveals to Freeze that he saved his wife, Freeze could not have been happier. There were glimpses of what he could have been. He’s second worst Freeze though. The worst is Freeze from 2004’s The Batman series. I left a comment on the main comments section that explains why that Freeze is way worse than this one
I don't understand the hate this version of Mr. Freeze gets. How people have missed the fact that he uses ice puns to cover up his inner torment is beyond me. If you notice in the flashbacks before Victor's accident, there's glimpses of the man he use to be; cold and distant. The combination of almost losing of his, coupled together with the accident changed Victor and now he's trying to enjoy life as best he can and maybe even be the man his wife wanted him to be. And yes, I'm 100% joking
I remembered a JL comic where Mr. Freeze teams up with other snow/ice themed villains to freeze a city to do some crime but he didn't do anything but just wander around the city with a Hawaiian shirt on. I kind of find it funny that he just let the others do anything and even instigated the other villains for a contest on who does the best "Ice Crime" becomes the best villain. Technically he's the reason why those guys even got beat due to their pettiness and wanting to be the best. Meanwhile he's just walking around the city as if he was a tourist.
I avoided the Schumacher Bat-flicks for over a decade before I bought the Blu-ray box set for $20. After ignoring them for another year or so, I decided to give them a chance... and I loved them for what they were: a return to that retro 1960s charm! Arnold had me laughing the whole way through that final movie! He was obviously having a great time.
Imagine if we got a proper Bane in the same movie, crippling Batman, leaving Freeze free to freeze Gotham. That would've been a cool, confident and unexpected twist for a cliffhanger
No McAvoy. With the age of Batman Mr.Freeze should be older. Cause in most of the interactions mr.freeze isn't bad, just on a mission. I would use Javier Bardem, for the look voice and ability to make you feel the dialog

Batman forever on the other hand I've watched a million times and still love to this day! I even remember thinking how good the crappy snes game of the movie was just because it was a batman forever game so we all have wild opinions 😜
Idea: What if there was a version of Freeze who does crack jokes and wears the polar bear ensemble, but it's all an act. A version who had seen how much the other rogues had fun with their antics and tries to put on a show like Riddler or Joker only for him to break his icy facade behind closed doors. A good example is from the UA-camr Solid JJ where Mr. Freeze casually eats ice cream while bantering with Batman, but when the Caped Crusader left, he sits alone, longingly trying to feed Nora some ice cream, longing for that connection they had so long ago. Edit: Got the name wrong.
Now, the casting made sense - if only because the most remembered Mr Freeze from the 60s TV series was Otto Preminger, so we have two Austrians playing the part. Must have seemed like a no-brainer. But Aaa-nowld didn't take the role seriously, and Preminger DID. The puns got VERY tiresome VERY quickly. What really made it so even worse than it could ever be was the fact that that Batman The Animated Series had recreated Mr Freeze in such an extraordinarily perfect way that the comics quickly adopted that interpretation as Mr Freeze's definitive origin. A live action version was going to suffer by comparison no matter who was cast in the role. They had a learner's manual for how to do it, but failed the exam bigtime. At least Aah-nowld looked like he was having fun in the role. If only that fun spread to the audience, but I think we were all just dumfounded at how incredibly bad it all was.
To be fair, that's what makes the 60s show so damn good. It's perfect "high camp", where they're very serious about playing these silly characters in a way that makes sense in-universe.
I look at this movie as taking place in 1966 universe. Everyone and everything was updated for the 90's, but was a continuation of the old Adam West show. With that in mind, it's a fun, fun movie.
I was born in 1989 and still remember Schwarzenegger, Jim Carrey, Danny DeVito and Jack Nicholson, all 4 different bad-guys in different Batman movies. I used to watch TV in 2000 and 2001, when internet wasn't popular and everybody was talking about bad-guys in Batman movies and barely about Batman itself. That's my experience with Original 4 Batman movies. I don't read comic-books, I only watch movies.
I know alot about the batman comics but i dont read them every single day i mainly get my knowledge from the internet i've watched basically every single batman tv show movie etc though
I feel like for me it was the opposite. Everyone was talking about Batman and barely mentioned the villains. "I'm Batman." Also, bat-nipples. That meme ruled the internet for a long time.
I love Arnold and think that if this had been a Tim Burton movie that Schwarzenegger could have been an interesting Freeze in that scenario. I'd have cast Charles Dance though. Just imagine!

if mr freeze shows ups in the matter reeves movie, he can looks so scary because of the cold air, you can only see his red glowing googles through the helmet with a dark silhouette.
The suit keeps him cold, probably with liquid nitrogen i havent seen the movie in forever but remember it fondly. Covering the face would likely kill him. I don't like the egg shape of the helmet; that said the whole idea is badass and looks functionally sound overall. Looking back at it he was very cringey, but he was my favorite part of the movie and still is. 😅
I actually enjoyed both Arnold's performance and jokes. Sure it was dank and campy - but that was intentional. And I think that with more serious script, he could do good job as well. The problem is the context - this guy exists in the same universe as Nicholson's Joker and Batman Returns villains.

I think the "The Batman" version where Freeze goes back to being a simple thief without the frozen wife backstory and has supernatural ice powers is the worst. But Vee seems to like it, so well, to each his own.
@@pedrosantossinger Even that one pales in comparison to new 52 Mr. Freeze wheere Nora is some woman who died decades ago and isn't even Freeze's wife. I will agree that Freeze is one of the weaker elements in The Batman. Still a fantastic show though.

I remember being most surprised by Bane. I saw him from the back for a couple of seconds in the trailer, and I thought, "Is that...?...It sure looks like...but it couldn't be!"
i agree somewhat i honestly feel like he can make a good mr freeze if they had him preforming the character in a more serious way (for lack of better phrasing) arnold really isn't a bad actor its just his accent is so strong and he can't change it so it didn't fit in certain roles so it makes seem like he's not that great an actor but i feel like his accent works as mr freeze (idky tbh)
Nah I'd vote for The Batman, only for taking the lazy route and making him a common (cold ;-)) criminal again. At least Schumacher (RIP) TRIED to put in the Nora Fries back story.
The way I see it, the whole move suffered from major tonal inconsistences. It mostly seemed to want to be comical and campy, but then there were bits and pieces like Alfred's illness and Freeze's backstory completely breaking the mood.
Actually originally Mr Freeze wasn't a tragic villain. It wasn't until BTAS they gave him the dying wife and his obsession with saving her But silver age Mr Freeze was another villain use ice/cold as a gimmick
Yeah, his BtAS origin was *heavily* inspired by the character Cryonic Man (to the point that people now assume that Cryonic Man stole it from Freeze despite debuting a decade-ish before BtAS). And they actually made it better by having Nora be dead before _Sub-Zero_ got green-lit and largely written to connect to Schumacher's film of all time.
I’ll be absolutely honest, there are times in B&R where Arnold has some quiet moments and for a brief second, I see Victor. It’s obviously not perfect, but there’s *something* there.
I can agree on Mr. Freeze’s suit, like the design and illumination of of the suit was the main thing that always kept me interested in this movie when I was younger…well that and having a crush on Poison Ivy (Uma Thurman).
I wouldn't mind a checkover of Freeze 66. His first two-parter seriously scared me as a kid, because he was so affably but coldly evil like a Bond villain (at least in some scenes).
@@nicholasfarrell5981 Correct! The first two-parter had George Sanders playing the role. Indeed, for all practical purposes George Sanders helped INVENT "Mister Freeze" as we know him today! Not only was his character very much closer to the "Heart of Ice" BTAS character (minus the romantic backstory), the character itself started being known as Mister Freeze during his appearance, previously being known in the comics long ago as Mister Zero. (And reintroduced to canon thanks to... well, to be honest, thanks to Otto Preminger's depiction more than Sanders.)
Id say "the batman" Mr freeze is a close contender with all his ice jokes. His design is amazing but it got tiring quickly Best is definitely tas as a broken man that keeps getting more broken everytime we see him.

Not a bad idea! First Bat-rogue that came to my mind: Victor Zsasz from the show *Gotham* , played by the great Anthony Carrigan (who would get his second break-out role right after in the show *Barry* as fan favorite Noho hank). He's coming back to the DCU very soon, playing Metamorpho/Rex Mason in the upcoming *Superman (2025)* by James Gunn... Can't wait! Anyway, Zsasz in the show *Gotham* has pretty much nothing in common with his usual comic book/Arkham games self. He's a killer for hire for the mob instead of a serial killer, he's a funny dude instead of being an ice-cold killer who would likely prefer cutting his own tongue before making a joke; he's a stylish professional instead of being half feral & running around shirtless (some rare comic book version have him dressed up, but it's very uncommon) and most importantly, he uses all kinds of weapons, from guns to rockets launchers, instead of only using knives. That version was so popular that the (terrible) show *Batwoman* used him in a couple episode, played by fellow *Gotham* co-star Alex Morf... and sure *Batwoman* in general sucks, but it was nice to see them paying homage to Carrigan's Zsasz, who was pretty much copy-pasted from his show into the second & third season of the new show. Thinking about it, *Batwoman* paid a lot of hommages to *Gotham* ... their season 3 professor Pyg (who only showed up in one episode) was also a very clear nod to the *Gotham* one, but he wasn't as good as Victor; Alex Morf killed it in his introduction scene in season 2 episode 3, with the perfect music while he's cutting in his new tally post-assasination. They even gave him the same rocket launcher that he has in *Gotham* ! Good stuff.
I had never picked up any Batman comics when I started watching Batman, the animated series as a kid. As a matter fact, the very first Batman comic that I ever owned was the small little pocket size comic book that came with the VHS of Batman mask of the phantasm. I wish I still had that. Going to have to look on eBay. Anyway, Batman the animated series was literally my introduction to Mr. freeze and I had no idea that he ever had any other origin story besides, the one presented on that show. So it made absolute and perfect sense to me when it was done in Batman and Robin. I understand how it could be a bit jarring if you know more about the characters past at that point in time. But I did not. this is and always will be Mr. freeze to me. Not Arnold Schwarzenegger necessarily, but that version of freeze. The tragic husband, trying to save his wife.
I already know that Jim Carrey could've worked even better as The Riddler, given a better director and screenplay. But would Arnold have ever worked as Freeze??
IIRC. the suit/makeup had some notorious issues. The glue used to hold the light in his mouth would melt, contacts would go dry and cause his eyes to go bloodshot, stuff like that, and Arnold rolled with it and struggled through, because he enjoyed the part was one of the reasons I think.
Thabk you for acknowledging that Arnold would have made a great Mr.Freeze had they gone more the Terminator 2 route. Mr.Freeze in this movie represents the real issue of this movie: clashing tones. The movie can work as a campy 90's action movie, but its littered with darker moments that the movie wants you to take seriously. Its like its trying to be Adam West Batman and Christian Bale Batman at the same time, and falls short of both.
if you take this movie for what it is it’s very funny. i understand why batman fans would be bothered by it but this era of movies was unintentionally hilarious a lot of the time
I think if they dropped the BTAS origin story it could’ve worked a lot better since it’s kinda a jarring contrast between the more seriousness of it and the campiness and goofiness of the character in the movie.
Debatably, this Frieze walked so TAS could run. If you check dates, this film released only a month after the TAS episode, heart of ice. Given the additional development time films take compared to a cartoon episode, it is quite plausible that the idea was created for the film first and added to the show for synergy.
Terrible opinion, Arnold did a fantastic job at playing the character, you seem to confuse the writing with the acting by Arnold, but they aren't the same. He played a silly version of a character, with silly writing, you barely even explain how Arnold did a bad job at the character, seemingly you think explaining the portrayal itself is sufficient reason to hate Arnold's acting as this portrayal, but he did a brilliant job, and I think you would be lying to say that his dumb puns didn't at least make you laugh ironically.
I had no idea they even used Mr. Freeze in the Adam West Batman show. Though I personally have only seen the movie and a couple episodes. I'm pretty sure he wasn't in Batman the Movie but, it has been years since I last watched it. I've been debating getting the whole series but, I just haven't had the extra money.
they literally just had to not make every line he says some kind of ice pun. whenever i watch this movie I'm like can you just talk like a normal person for 1 minute? he feels less like a human being and more like an action figure with set phrases. even Ivy is allowed to just talk like a normal person every line out of her mouth isn't some nonsense about plants
I don't blame Arnie, I blame Warner Brothers, Akiva Goldsman and, to a lesser extent, Joel Schumacher. He looked great, his voice worked well for the character IMO and in the quieter scenes, (him watching his wedding video, etc.) I even felt for the poor guy
Arnold's Mr. Freeze is the best villain because he's the worst villain. He's so obviously terrible that it's hilarious to watch him and extremely fun to talk about. You could make jokes about how awful he is all day long. The fact that they did that to a villain that has become iconic due to his tragic backstory is both funny (I mean, let's face it, people would like this portrayal a lot more if he was called Refrigerator Captain or something) and also a bit tone deaf.
I think Arnold _could_ have given us a great, cold, serious Mr. Freeze. *Actually, maybe he still could.* DC's animated films are quite nice, but if that is too much, imagine just rerecording the audio for _Batman & Robin_ while editing out the more toyetic scenes? Not even the entire film; just give us a taste of Arnold channeling his ice cold terminator persona in delivering his lines. Which we got a taste of here and there even in _Batman & Robin_
Blasphemy in the title. I adore this version it's just the best. Bad puns galore with 0% shame 100% commitment. This is a goofy ass movie so he fits with the rest of it I do get your point but realize what movie this is. They wanted fun and campy and pun mr freeze is perfect for it. And the design is incredible I love it and the saturated colors of the rest of the movie. Especially in this area of blandness it pops like nothing else.
I actually found Mr. Freeze to be one of the best parts of this movie. Was his performance good? Hell no. But this is a movie with Bat nipples and a Bat credit card. An Oscar winning tragic performance would be out of place here. I felt like he saw what movie he was in and said "oh well camp fest it is then."
To be honest, in the context of our influencer driven world, this Mr. Freeze works a lot better. performing jokes for the camera, collabing, doing everything to keep attention on you all while hiding some the personal shit that is the real you.... I'm reading way too much into batman and robin

Mr. Freeze strikes again! I'm afraid I must disagree, however. I find the Gotham Mr. Freeze to be the worst. Primarily because that's actually a good show that I like. When This Freeze is bad, it's in this movie, so it's not a big deal, but Gotham Freeze is just the epitome of wasted potential. They kill Nora in his debut story, completely removing his tragic backstory and motivation, and then he proceeds to be a hired goon with no personality for the rest of the show, with no reason to exist. At least this Freeze has an arc! At least this Freeze is entertaining! Gotham Freeze starts off fine and then devolves into nothing.
i was always confused why they chose to choose a guy with such a thick accent for Freeze in Batman and Robin but it wasn't until this video that i saw that the Adam West Freeze also had a thick German/Austrian type accent which is probably why they chose Arnold. this movie was clearly a homage to the 60s show.
every other choice was better i personally think Patrick Stewart would have been the best but none of them would fit this film. imagine either of those two guys shouting "what killed the dinosaurs?!?! THE ICE AGE" the best actors for the part might have made it even worse
I want to know WHO went to see Batman & Robin expecting something on par with Batmans first big screen adaptation...I look at it like this...Batman & Robin is a big budget version of the 60s Adam West show...the only thing missing was the crooked camera angles when the villains were on screen...looking at it with that mindset the movie is a delight... Certainly not the best by any stretch but watchable...

A version who had seen how much the other rogues had fun with their antics and tries to put on a show like Riddler or Joker only for him to break his icy facade behind closed doors. A good example is from the UA-camr Solid JJ where Mr. Freeze casually eats ice cream while bantering with Batman, but when the Caped Crusader left, he sits alone, longingly trying to feed Nora some ice cream, longing for that connection they had so long ago.

Since I was 7 when the film came out this is my second favorite Mr.Freeze right behind the animated series
Now, the casting made sense - if only because the most remembered Mr Freeze from the 60s TV series was Otto Preminger, so we have two Austrians playing the part. Must have seemed like a no-brainer. But Aaa-nowld didn't take the role seriously, and Preminger DID. The puns got VERY tiresome VERY quickly.
What really made it so even worse than it could ever be was the fact that that Batman The Animated Series had recreated Mr Freeze in such an extraordinarily perfect way that the comics quickly adopted that interpretation as Mr Freeze's definitive origin. A live action version was going to suffer by comparison no matter who was cast in the role. They had a learner's manual for how to do it, but failed the exam bigtime.
At least Aah-nowld looked like he was having fun in the role. If only that fun spread to the audience, but I think we were all just dumfounded at how incredibly bad it all was.
To be fair, that's what makes the 60s show so damn good. It's perfect "high camp", where they're very serious about playing these silly characters in a way that makes sense in-universe.
I look at this movie as taking place in 1966 universe. Everyone and everything was updated for the 90's, but was a continuation of the old Adam West show. With that in mind, it's a fun, fun movie.
I was born in 1989 and still remember Schwarzenegger, Jim Carrey, Danny DeVito and Jack Nicholson, all 4 different bad-guys in different Batman movies. I used to watch TV in 2000 and 2001, when internet wasn't popular and everybody was talking about bad-guys in Batman movies and barely about Batman itself. That's my experience with Original 4 Batman movies. I don't read comic-books, I only watch movies.
I know alot about the batman comics but i dont read them every single day i mainly get my knowledge from the internet i've watched basically every single batman tv show movie etc though

because of the cold air, you can only see his red glowing googles through the helmet with a dark silhouette.
The suit keeps him cold, probably with liquid nitrogen i havent seen the movie in forever but remember it fondly. Covering the face would likely kill him. I don't like the egg shape of the helmet; that said the whole idea is badass and looks functionally sound overall. Looking back at it he was very cringey, but he was my favorite part of the movie and still is. 😅

I actually enjoyed both Arnold's performance and jokes. Sure it was dank and campy - but that was intentional. And I think that with more serious script, he could do good job as well.
The problem is the context - this guy exists in the same universe as Nicholson's Joker and Batman Returns villains.

I think the "The Batman" version where Freeze goes back to being a simple thief without the frozen wife backstory and has supernatural ice powers is the worst. But Vee seems to like it, so well, to each his own.

i agree somewhat i honestly feel like he can make a good mr freeze if they had him preforming the character in a more serious way (for lack of better phrasing) arnold really isn't a bad actor its just his accent is so strong and he can't change it so it didn't fit in certain roles so it makes seem like he's not that great an actor but i feel like his accent works as mr freeze (idky tbh)

The way I see it, the whole move suffered from major tonal inconsistences. It mostly seemed to want to be comical and campy, but then there were bits and pieces like Alfred's illness and Freeze's backstory completely breaking the mood.
Now that you mention it, the Terminator would have been the best Mr. Freeze. Goes to show, writing and directing is critical to a movies performance.

Yeah, his BtAS origin was *heavily* inspired by the character Cryonic Man (to the point that people now assume that Cryonic Man stole it from Freeze despite debuting a decade-ish before BtAS). And they actually made it better by having Nora be dead before _Sub-Zero_ got green-lit and largely written to connect to Schumacher's film of all time.
Arnold was absolutely robbed of having another good iconic role next to the terminator

I’ll be absolutely honest, there are times in B&R where Arnold has some quiet moments and for a brief second, I see Victor. It’s obviously not perfect, but there’s *something* there.
I can agree on Mr. Freeze’s suit, like the design and illumination of of the suit was the main thing that always kept me interested in this movie when I was younger…well that and having a crush on Poison Ivy (Uma Thurman).

Not only was his character very much closer to the "Heart of Ice" BTAS character (minus the romantic backstory), the character itself started being known as Mister Freeze during his appearance, previously being known in the comics long ago as Mister Zero. (And reintroduced to canon thanks to... well, to be honest, thanks to Otto Preminger's depiction more than Sanders.)

Not a bad idea! First Bat-rogue that came to my mind: Victor Zsasz from the show *Gotham* , played by the great Anthony Carrigan (who would get his second break-out role right after in the show *Barry* as fan favorite Noho hank).
He's coming back to the DCU very soon, playing Metamorpho/Rex Mason in the upcoming *Superman (2025)* by James Gunn... Can't wait!
Anyway, Zsasz in the show *Gotham* has pretty much nothing in common with his usual comic book/Arkham games self.
He's a killer for hire for the mob instead of a serial killer, he's a funny dude instead of being an ice-cold killer who would likely prefer cutting his own tongue before making a joke; he's a stylish professional instead of being half feral & running around shirtless (some rare comic book version have him dressed up, but it's very uncommon) and most importantly, he uses all kinds of weapons, from guns to rockets launchers, instead of only using knives.
That version was so popular that the (terrible) show *Batwoman* used him in a couple episode, played by fellow *Gotham* co-star Alex Morf... and sure *Batwoman* in general sucks, but it was nice to see them paying homage to Carrigan's Zsasz, who was pretty much copy-pasted from his show into the second & third season of the new show.
Thinking about it, *Batwoman* paid a lot of hommages to *Gotham* ... their season 3 professor Pyg (who only showed up in one episode) was also a very clear nod to the *Gotham* one, but he wasn't as good as Victor; Alex Morf killed it in his introduction scene in season 2 episode 3, with the perfect music while he's cutting in his new tally post-assasination.
They even gave him the same rocket launcher that he has in *Gotham* !
Good stuff.
Saying Patrick Stewart is too good to play this version of Mr Freeze ignores the existence of "The Emoji Movie". (Which in most cases, we should do.)
I had never picked up any Batman comics when I started watching Batman, the animated series as a kid. As a matter fact, the very first Batman comic that I ever owned was the small little pocket size comic book that came with the VHS of Batman mask of the phantasm. I wish I still had that. Going to have to look on eBay. Anyway, Batman the animated series was literally my introduction to Mr. freeze and I had no idea that he ever had any other origin story besides, the one presented on that show. So it made absolute and perfect sense to me when it was done in Batman and Robin. I understand how it could be a bit jarring if you know more about the characters past at that point in time. But I did not. this is and always will be Mr. freeze to me. Not Arnold Schwarzenegger necessarily, but that version of freeze. The tragic husband, trying to save his wife.
I already know that Jim Carrey could've worked even better as The Riddler, given a better director and screenplay.
But would Arnold have ever worked as Freeze??
IIRC. the suit/makeup had some notorious issues. The glue used to hold the light in his mouth would melt, contacts would go dry and cause his eyes to go bloodshot, stuff like that, and Arnold rolled with it and struggled through, because he enjoyed the part was one of the reasons I think.
Also the light for his teeth leaked, so Arnie was getting a battery acid gargle every time they did a take with it.
Thabk you for acknowledging that Arnold would have made a great Mr.Freeze had they gone more the Terminator 2 route. Mr.Freeze in this movie represents the real issue of this movie: clashing tones. The movie can work as a campy 90's action movie, but its littered with darker moments that the movie wants you to take seriously. Its like its trying to be Adam West Batman and Christian Bale Batman at the same time, and falls short of both.
if you take this movie for what it is it’s very funny. i understand why batman fans would be bothered by it but this era of movies was unintentionally hilarious a lot of the time
I think if they dropped the BTAS origin story it could’ve worked a lot better since it’s kinda a jarring contrast between the more seriousness of it and the campiness and goofiness of the character in the movie.
Debatably, this Frieze walked so TAS could run. If you check dates, this film released only a month after the TAS episode, heart of ice. Given the additional development time films take compared to a cartoon episode, it is quite plausible that the idea was created for the film first and added to the show for synergy.
Terrible opinion, Arnold did a fantastic job at playing the character, you seem to confuse the writing with the acting by Arnold, but they aren't the same. He played a silly version of a character, with silly writing, you barely even explain how Arnold did a bad job at the character, seemingly you think explaining the portrayal itself is sufficient reason to hate Arnold's acting as this portrayal, but he did a brilliant job, and I think you would be lying to say that his dumb puns didn't at least make you laugh ironically.
I consider Arnold's Mr. Freeze to be so bad that it's good. Most of the movie is like this and Mr. Freeze is the epitome of it all.
With all that's happening with the DCEU now, Arnold schwarzenegger as Mr Freeze was probably the best decision now. 😂
I had no idea they even used Mr. Freeze in the Adam West Batman show. Though I personally have only seen the movie and a couple episodes. I'm pretty sure he wasn't in Batman the Movie but, it has been years since I last watched it. I've been debating getting the whole series but, I just haven't had the extra money.
To an extent I didn't mind him as freeze but if the script was made a little bit better maybe he could have done better.
they literally just had to not make every line he says some kind of ice pun. whenever i watch this movie I'm like can you just talk like a normal person for 1 minute? he feels less like a human being and more like an action figure with set phrases. even Ivy is allowed to just talk like a normal person every line out of her mouth isn't some nonsense about plants

He looked great, his voice worked well for the character IMO and in the quieter scenes, (him watching his wedding video, etc.) I even felt for the poor guy

The fact that they did that to a villain that has become iconic due to his tragic backstory is both funny (I mean, let's face it, people would like this portrayal a lot more if he was called Refrigerator Captain or something) and also a bit tone deaf.
I think Arnold _could_ have given us a great, cold, serious Mr. Freeze. *Actually, maybe he still could.* DC's animated films are quite nice, but if that is too much, imagine just rerecording the audio for _Batman & Robin_ while editing out the more toyetic scenes? Not even the entire film; just give us a taste of Arnold channeling his ice cold terminator persona in delivering his lines. Which we got a taste of here and there even in _Batman & Robin_

Blasphemy in the title. I adore this version it's just the best. Bad puns galore with 0% shame 100% commitment. This is a goofy ass movie so he fits with the rest of it I do get your point but realize what movie this is. They wanted fun and campy and pun mr freeze is perfect for it. And the design is incredible I love it and the saturated colors of the rest of the movie. Especially in this area of blandness it pops like nothing else.
I actually found Mr. Freeze to be one of the best parts of this movie. Was his performance good? Hell no. But this is a movie with Bat nipples and a Bat credit card. An Oscar winning tragic performance would be out of place here. I felt like he saw what movie he was in and said "oh well camp fest it is then."

I'm afraid I must disagree, however. I find the Gotham Mr. Freeze to be the worst. Primarily because that's actually a good show that I like. When This Freeze is bad, it's in this movie, so it's not a big deal, but Gotham Freeze is just the epitome of wasted potential. They kill Nora in his debut story, completely removing his tragic backstory and motivation, and then he proceeds to be a hired goon with no personality for the rest of the show, with no reason to exist. At least this Freeze has an arc! At least this Freeze is entertaining! Gotham Freeze starts off fine and then devolves into nothing.

i was always confused why they chose to choose a guy with such a thick accent for Freeze in Batman and Robin but it wasn't until this video that i saw that the Adam West Freeze also had a thick German/Austrian type accent which is probably why they chose Arnold. this movie was clearly a homage to the 60s show.

I want to know WHO went to see Batman & Robin expecting something on par with Batmans first big screen adaptation...I look at it like this...Batman & Robin is a big budget version of the 60s Adam West show...the only thing missing was the crooked camera angles when the villains were on screen...looking at it with that mindset the movie is a delight... Certainly not the best by any stretch but watchable...
