Making a Porsche 917 Style Shift Ball
Вставка
- Опубліковано 30 гру 2020
- I've always wanted to make a Porsche 917 style shift ball. This layered wooden ball is an iconic 1960's style shift ball. It's 55 - 58 mm in diameter and with the stainless base, has good weight. Wooden shifters are a style element that I like. It's got a 1960's European flair about it that I believe will match the "feel" I'm looking for in this build.
If you'd like to build your own - follow along.

I would absolutely buy a NO FEAR Throttle Stop Garage T Shirt!
In the new year...I'll bring out a few new designs.
Wood? I got the wrong channel!
Seriously, it's always exciting to see so much technicality.
These shift balls are real jewels.
Thanks
I didn't realize how much that shifter bothered me until you fixed it. Those are beautiful.
Can't wait to see how the interior plans come together.
Man oh man, do they ever look GREAT!
Thanks!
Impressive ingenuity turning the shift knobs on your drill press! I never would have thought of that.
If you try it...just expect that chuck to fall out!
Love it. I plan on doing matching wooden steering wheel and shift knob in the 240 whenever I get around to it. Always loved the look of the 3 spoke wooden steering wheel in my Grandpas Jag XJ12.
Stay tuned...
Really enjoy the bloopers at the end. I go through the exact same internal dialogue when filming lol
The best ones are when I curse at the camera as I bash into it for the fifth time during a shot. LOL.
I love this style shift knob, great work!
Glad you like it!
Every time I do something in my own shop I hold myself up to Craig standards, and sadly I can almost never say that I come close. It's not just no fear of failure, it's amazingly skilled hands and genius levels of general knowledge that make you so formidable, not to mention the little tools you build like the sanding jig or even the lathe chisel rest. They seem so simple yet they represent a level of thought that eludes me most of the time. I'm happy to contribute baubles like the shifter knob bases whenever I can: my reward is watching you in action.
Thanks buddy - I really couldn't do this without your help and support. In truth, what drives me forward is our road-trip dream.
Love the ingenuity! No lathe, no problem!
Thanks!
Lovely! They look even better in person!
Yes they do!
Brilliant result. Your videos are really inspiring, and getting to learn from your experiences is a real privilege. "A little bit of ingenuity and no fear of failure" is going to be my motto for 2021.
Thanks - attitude is everything in any project.
Looks amazingly beautiful
Now I want one for my Porsche built
Thanks. You can buy them for your application.
I want to make one now. Thank you
Picky=OCD. Been there, done that. Thanx for the wood finishing tips. Beautiful work.
Glad the wood finishing tips help.
Beautiful
Thank you! Cheers!
With light woods, it would make amazing Christmas tree ornaments.
LOL
WOW, fantastic surface finish on all the gear knobs. Great work Craig and specialist tools from your 3D printer. Ian in G.B
Thanks Ian 👍
Stunning looking knobs!
Thank you kindly!
Dude- that’s so awesome
Thanks.
Dude, those are beautiful!
I think so too!
Really cool, I really like the darker one. Very subtle ✌
Thanks ✌️
nice looking options. hang in there- getting closer every day.
Fingers crossed!
Wow those are amazing!
Thanks - they turned out nicely.
Beautiful work!
Thank you! Cheers!
Your videos never disappoint. Keep up the awesome work! Happy New Year!!
Happy new year and thanks!
Definitely doing something like this in my next car. Looks awesome.
Thanks - I think they turned out pretty nice.
Lovely work, can't wait to see more!
Thank you! Cheers!
amazing work !
Thanks a lot!
Love your work Mr. Throttle. A pillar drill is really just a vertical lathe. The purist woodworker guys will choke on that one. I made one using Jarrah and pine. Not your standard of work but satisfying. Keep up the good work.
Thanks...now if that Morse taper would just hold and quit falling out!
Great detail, nice final touches. Stay safe
Thanks, you too!
Yesssss! This is awesome! Always loved the 917 shift knob
Same here!
Thank you, I will be making a few of these now!! Love it!
Have fun!
Love it, Happy New Year!
Happy new year Andy!
Swap you a single malt for one of your factory seconds for my old mans sailboat!
Enjoying your projects while I have none😁
Happy 2021 to you and D!
LOL - 2 kids...best projects ever. Have a great year buddy.
This is exactly what I've been working on this week, I'm taking a slightly different approach but really love the result, really inspiring. Happy new year
Very cool - hope it all turns out.
Happy new year, looking forward to seeing how much progress you make in 2021. You and a couple of other UA-cam channels have inspired me to start to restore my fathers 40 year old motorcycle (it’s been sitting outside in the garden for the last 30 years).
Happy new year! Have fun working on your Father's motorcycle.
Love it and love one for my 996. Just need to try to make one...
Have fun - you'll probably end up making a few.
beautiful knob - Picky is why this channel is so informative, including no fear of failing. Happy New Year! 2021 is going to be awesome. 👍👍😎👍👍
Happy new year!
oh man those are beautiful, you really cant even buy something, even a very expensive knob, that looks quite that good.
Thanks - much appreciated. I'm happy with how it looks - can't wait to drive it.
I like the first to the right ;)
Thanks
Man, I love the whole project so far, but those are absolutely gorgeous. The wood will be a wonderful counterpoint to the CF pieces.
Thanks!
great work man!
Glad you like it!
I think the one you showed in close-up first, the one with the Brazilian Leopardwood, was my favorite as well. The texture in your darker wood is really cool, and I like how the texture got flipped around the central walnut banding. I'd probably still try to keep compatibility with the rubbery shift knob just so you can switch over to it if necessary or if the preference hits you to have that shift knob instead.
I've got several options. We'll see how it all comes together when I hit that stage. When the interior goes in, that's when some of these ideas shine (I hope).
Wow that is some serious crafts Man shift going on there lol Happy new year really enjoy your show
Happy new year!
wow those came out nice.
Thank you! Cheers!
Tolle Arbeit.❗👍 👏 🤝
Thanks.
Great finished products! You should sell/auction any extras you don’t have a home for. I know I would be an interested party.
Maybe someday when the car is finished!
Very good man nice project 👍👍👍👍
Thanks 👍
Awesome design! Good idea and I love your attitude. Subscribed :)
Awesome! Thank you!
Stumbled across you channel today looking for info on how to make composite body panels. Love your work, subbed and can't wait for more
Thanks and welcome
Beautiful! 😀😍
I've done a few things on the drill press as well but I'm usually using a file for forming the wood. 😀
That's a great idea!
@@ThrottleStopGarage and highest possible speed. 😀👍
Happy new year
Same to you
I had to scroll down to look for "balls" jokes. lol...these look sweet!
LOL...they're in there.
Looks amazing, so you will definitely have to build 3 more cars for the other knobs to go onto
Or just change them to suit my mood. LOL.
@@ThrottleStopGarage you could do the same with 3 cars 😃
Happy New Year to you! ^__-
Same to you!
awesome videos. love the detail you put into your videos. what type of computer programs are you running? im just starting an engine swap and think some computer programs might help in design maybe? thank you in advance. once again awesome videos.
Fusion 360 for CAD work is excellent even for beginners.
Hoonigan's Autofocus channel has a great baby blue Amazon if your keen to see another custom.
I know the car. It was just painted and now is popping up all over social media.
What a beautiful shit knob. I really want to try this.
Thanks.
I'd love to see a take on this where it's segmented like that but sort of the flattened oval shape of the 120 series knob.
Interesting idea. I'd have to see if I can find the original knob...that's not been in the car since 2006.
Damn they look like fine, are those for sale?
Nope - no time for that sort of fun.
Would you be willing to share the file to print those shapes to make sure the circle shape is good?
Sure - I'll see if I can find the files. I'll post here if I find them.
Eww working with dead tree carcasses. 😂
Wonderful results and relatively simple
Happy 2021
More time that difficult.
Hello, I’ll buy your black shifter knob for my “triple black” MGA restoration...
Thanks Tony - I'm not selling anything. You just never know. I also have another car that uses this transmission, so I may swap it into that car.
Can I buy one lol
LOL indeed.
@@ThrottleStopGarage How much?
@@samuelhugger5320 What I was trying to say was "No" - I don't sell parts.
@@ThrottleStopGarage Then just say you don't sell parts.
Woow woow 😍💋 💝💖❤️
Thanks!
You are not a true Canadian if you don’t use Maple 🍁
But I did use Maple...it's the light wood.
"dashes" of wood. what a dad joke.
I wasn't even trying!
@@ThrottleStopGarage maybe some dashes of wood on your dash? Gauge rings? Glove box pull?
