Custom Wood Shift Knob (with basic tools) - Subaru Outback

- I wanted to spruce up my 2009 Subaru Outback with a 5-speed manual transmission which I drive daily, so I decided to make my own custom wooden shift knob to add some flare.
I chose to use Wenge wood and Brazilian Cherry and tried to use only basic tools to show that anyone could create a custom piece like this.

What a cool shifter man--nice work, love the contrasting pop of the cherry and wenge.
Thanks bud,
Hey there Doug, just wanted to give a quick tip about sanding that I learned in auto body school... Always go with a factor of 2, maximum. For example, to sand out 80 grit marks, the maximum would be 160 grit. Now, 160 doesn't exist, so better go with 120 than 220 in this case. For painted or clearcoated projects, I usually go 1000, 2000 and 3000, all wet sanded, sometimes I sneak 1500 in there. Then finish off with compound (Meguiars Ultimate Compound works great on the cheap) and you get a silky smooth. OEM-like finish. :D
This is truly a work of art, Doug. I love it! I definitely wouldn't consider you a hack when it comes to this
This dude killed it. Great video
Very impressive Douglas...Not T-Bad...
I had seen the final product, but watching the process was cool bud! That shifter knob is absolutely ten out of ten!!
Let me see if I can wrap my head around this. You say you're a hack at woodworking, yet you create something that adds a touch of what I'll call 60's British luxury to a modern econobox. If that's the final product then you are Seriously undervaluing your woodworking skill set. I will say that the I like a nice sized shifter knob on a standard transmission. I had a 94 Ranger that the stock knob didn't fit the hand very well, tried a couple aftermarket ones then found a nice one from LMC that fir the hand perfectly. The knob you made looks like it fits the hand nicely. Good job.
Its a thing of beauty !!!!and made by ur own sweat, nice.snooky pa.
My XJ country is getting a mahogany shifter to match the dash. I think yours turned out great. Keep up the good work.
Looks good
Thanks!
Awesome! Throughout the video I couldn't help but think, chocolate cake knob
Nice job
Looks very good, great selection on wood choices. Linseed oil seems like a good choice, with it being the popular choice for Gandalf (hiking) sticks. It really made that grain come out nicely.
Excellent creation and love the finished product.
Crazy cool. I want one for my XJ!
Very nice 👌
Thanks!
Nice work! Wouldn’t change a thing.
Hey bud first one 🙂
😎👍
Badass
Looks great awesome job
I agree with your stance on and paper from Harbor Freight. THE WORST!
Nice work! ! may I ask how's going after 2 years? Still in good con?
Can you do this on the Wj next please lol. Man I have thought to do it but how with the push on style?
Nice! Loved every minute of it! Is there any way I can do this for my jeep grand cherokee if the shifter has a release button?
Well yes and no. It is doable, but is different and not quite as east. I will try to do a video on it sometime. BleepinJeep has a video where he made a shifter for his XJ with a release..

I like it. I don’t like your car you left your Jeep
