When I moved here in 1979, there was a trailer park right on the beach, next to the round SeaShell Motel. It was where the Hilton is today. I did sketches of both, and lost them over the years. I think the beach has changed for the worse in so many ways: overbuilt, over-crowded, too much traffic, all the old charm gone. On the plus side - the Sunset Pier event is wonderful, and the promenade a perfect addition.

It was my first Florida beach, as my grandparents lived in nearby Dunedin. It has really attracted a lot more development - some good, but overall more congested. I always liked Sand Key on days when the main beach was crowded. Eating breakfast at an outdoor place across from the beach was always nice, as the crowds are fairly thin before noon (at least they used to be). As a kid, I liked collecting shells, seahorse carcasses and looking at the big horseshoe crabs that came in with the tide. They used to have a steel band playing on the terrace of the Adam's Mark Hotel, but that looks like it has been replaced, or absorbed into another hotel. Several decades later, it still has its charms, but I think I would prefer longer-term stays at a more tranquil beach. I do like that free parking is offered downtown with a ferry to the beach, as you used to have to feed the meters, or get tickets. I wonder if the Scientology gang is still big in Clearwater? Their HQ used to be in downtown. Lots of great memories there, but I think I will take Siesta Key or Lido Beach, near Sarasota.

I went to Clearwater Beach for the first time last month and was very impressed and will return there. It is safe but not boring and has appeal for both families and singles. Also, the beach is very well maintained as they have equipment working on the sand all the time to keep it smooth and clean.

Wow how its changed. I was born at Morton Plant hospital n 1961. Graduated Clearwater High school n 1979. Worked for a lawn maintenance company in the 80's and Terry Hogan otherwise known as Hulk Hogan was one of our accounts, when he lived on the intercoastal waterway, and his daughter was still n diapers. I even got to meet Randy Savage at Terry's. Anyway Clearwater beach is definitely much different now than the 60's and since I moved away in 1985. Dad always had a boat so I learned how to fish and then became married and my matron of honor and best friend Pam Estes and i would get up at 4:30 am to get dads boat and go to the grass flats off Anchlote Key and go sea trout fishing, catching Redfish, Snook , Trout. Or when it was in season for scallops. We always had a blast. I am n my 50's now but would dearly love to go back for a visit and fishing trip. I can truly say without a doubt Clearwater Beach is definitely a fantastic destination for the whole family. Please keep her clean, and on hot days dig your toes down n the sand where it gets cool. It feels so nice to your feet. And if your walking n the water always do the stingray shuffle and you won't get stung! Enjoy!

My fondest memories are of vacationing with my family at the Bon-Aire on St. Pete Beach. We started going in the early 60's. We would fly into Whitted airport and drive over to the beach. We would visit the Seaquarium, Tussaud's Wax Museum and play Tiki Jungle Golf (it's still there). Favorite places included Ted Peters Smoked Fish in Pasadena and Louis Pappas. We have returned a couple of times in the last decade and will return again. One of my favorite places on earth.

I live in a condo on the intercostal side of Clearwater - love it...You don't need to stay at one of the expensive hotels mentioned. There are plenty of cute little boutique hotels...even Palm Pavilion has an affordable little hotel....I suggest plan on not driving because traffic is a bummer and you can really walk, trolley or rent and ride a bike up and down Mandalay....the Bait House is a great place for lunch or any of the Frenchy's restaurants, as is Cooters and Palm Pavillion. I suggest riding a bike all the way down to the last public access on North Beach (take a cooler backpack with snacks and drinks)...park it on the beach and then walk all the way down to Caladesi Island and look for shells. Take the trolley to Dunedin one Saturday for the Market perhaps....really fun little downtown area. You can also rent Kayaks on Caladesi or Honeymoon Island. You can rent paddle boards as well. This video had great suggestions, but you can also have a ton of fun and enjoy the beach without spending so much money.

Yep the Palm Pavilion & Frenchy's (a Clearwater Beach icon) are great suggestions.

We walk Clearwater Beach frequently early in the morning and are constantly amazed by the amount of left behind trash we find and collect. Yes, there are beach cleaning machines but they don’t go below the high water mark and the garbage there is disturbing; plastic cups, bags, toys, beer bottles, water bottles, dirty diapers, remnants of meals, cans, and even pieces of clothing and blankets have been collected on our walks. It’s disgusting that people who come to any beach to enjoy its beauty leave their trash for others to clean up.
I have a suggestion that the businesses, especially those with direct access to the beach, have their employees, many of whom are erecting umbrellas for their guests, pick up the trash they see instead of walking over it and then extend their survey to the waters edge. If done twice a day, it would help enormously. And visitors, take a bag along to pick up your own junk and some that you find. Thanks.

This past weekend was the first time we've ever been to Clearwater Beach. We were visiting from Jacksonville Florida, and we absolutely loved it. I was like a kid again when I found out Hulk Hogan had a store there. I was hoping to see him but sadly I didn't.

It's a beautiful beach, and I really do enjoy it. However, when you compare it to places like Myrtle, Virginia Beach, and Ocean City, MD, there isn't really a lot to do outside of the beach itself. I know there are some people who don't enjoy the tourist beach vibe, but Clearwater already has that but without all the fun touristy things to do that are great for families. Sure, there a a few shops and restaurants. Some boat tours, and a mini golf course, but not much else. Maybe I just got used to having endless things to do going to the previously mentioned beaches and that's why Clearwater was a little disappointing for me. A nice boardwalk amusement park would be awesome. Maybe a few more mini golf courses and some more shops and restaurants. More for families to do. There are plenty of non-built up beaches in the area that they could do a lot more with Clearwater.

I tend to agree with you on that. Personally I like VA Bch & Ocean City better. We will be most likely doing 2 or all 3 of those beaches you mentioned next summer.
