Meet After Meet: Trains Use Crossovers & Knock Down Signals at Busy Mainline Interlocking

- What started as just heading out for a catch of the Nickel Plate Heritage unit, ended up resulting in 6 trains in less than 2 hours as traffic fleeted east and west resulting in several meets, including one rolling meet as perfect as it could get! Signals light up and fall for the steady traffic just before sunset, as good as it gets on the busy two track Norfolk Southern Harrisburg Mainline between Harrisburg and Reading, Pennsylvania.

Sorry if I sound a little stuffy, I've been sick for the past 10 days or so and finally feel better, I didn't want to hold on to this video for too long! This is the first video I used my new RODE NT1-A mic for voiceover, so I hope it sounds a little better, I have many more videos coming soon that I've been trying to catch up on! VERY enjoyable! The trains, signals, lighting, and camera work all complemented each other perfectly! Oh, those NS Heritage units? I can't help but think enjoy them while you can because it wouldn't surprise me that when they go in for heavy repairs and repaints those Heritage schemes will be history.
Too bad about that picturesque farm going away, but if you were Farmer Jones and Mr. Developer showed up one day and offered you millions for the property what would you do? It'd be hard to say "No!"

I think it's also the fact that the farmers hit retirement age and no one really wanted to resume the farming business, but cannot say for sure. Since it's not preserved land, a lot of zoning is either R1 or light industrial. The good news is it sounds like the facility will get rail service if and when it is ever built. @@CentralPennRailProductions Quite true, I hadn't thought about the retirement age angle. It happens to a lot of small businesses (and farming is a business after all) where the owner wants to retire and the kids aren't interested in taking over.

I have been waiting for months for a new video. You do the best videos. Im a PA native and I travel all over PA doing survey work and sometimes it involves railways. I have always had a soft spot for trains and these videos are the best!!!
If all goes well, I hope to be uploading more regularly this year, I spent much of last year trying to catch up on the backlog over the last 3 years. Funny thing is, a lot of my upcoming videos will be from outside of PA. Thanks for watching!
Very nice work Sir! Good camera work , nice smooth pans, just the right amount of excellent commentary! At 7;30 , you say you like crossovers...I do as well and even enjoy them on my layout! As a signal guy, we sometimes forget how crucial the interlocking system is in railroads! A poorly maintained switch machine, or a crossed wire in a system , can result in a head on , or derailment. Luckily all signal systems are "fail safe" but as tech's , we have the responsibility to keep them that way!

You're channel is really starting to mature.
Really enjoy that you don't do much commentary if any at all with the steam engines. I love hearing those whistles linger above the trees for minutes on end.
But on the modern freight it was really good to hear commentary and information about the trains, their performance, and their history.

Steam definitely speaks for itself, no need for the commentary. I am transitioning into doing more operational-based videos with the modern stuff hence the voice over, but I don't like speaking over the key moments where the sound shines through. Thanks for subscribing!

That's the auto router's favorite move on the Harrisburg Line. Not sure what sense it makes to stop a train for a meet in double track but that's where we are.
Yeah it confused me at first, but then it made sense when they ran all the westbounds up both tracks until 19G got out of the way.
one thing i liked about out west trains they have 70mph crossovers, that is cool to watch! it’s so smooth! and 10:28 that’s an interesting signal aspect…. diverging into the on coming train? lol

Yeah it was definitely an exciting but nervous feeling, I couldn't believe how perfect that timing was. Especially considering everything was running "opposite" main, I would have been blocked by that 11N!

The deviation in the K’s and E’s for oil and ethanol is done for the 1,000 mile inspection requirements.

Very Cool!! I recently moved to PA from Staten Island during CHristmas break and I plan to see some action on the Harrisburg Line this Spring or Summer. Also, I've been going to the Port Road Branch a lot lately, but I can't seem to come at the right time. I've always gotten there too late or when there's absolutly nothing at all. IDK if traisn r going back 2 running in the night and early morning hours cuz of Amtrak restrictions but if u know a thing or 2 about what time 2 show up 4 trains on the Port RIad, pls let me know. Once again, great catches and keep it up!!
Yeah the Port Road is awesome! I still have to catch up and put all my videos together from the Port Road and NEC from 2021 until now. It seems like the daylight traffic has slowed down but still happens time to time. The days are just too short right now to see much in daylight, but come spring I might venture down there again.
@@CentralPennRailProductions Ok, I see. I've been going down there in daylight hours but I've only gotten close to catching anything. I've mostly been going to the COLA tower area, cuz that's the closest spot to my house. Most of those trips r kinda like mini expeditionary trips to explore what has largely been foreign territory up to this point.
8:39-8:55 That is very unlikely, but very rare. I usually only see those on KCS, CP Rail, or CSX manifests...
But at the same time, it actually doesn't sound rare, because it's just a MIXED freight!! 😆

This train looks like a zebra-similar to the cefx locomotive ac4400cw.
Great video. I'm considering getting a Panasonic HC X-1500 myself. One of the main issues I've seen in reviews is the less than stellar low light performance, but this video looks pretty good, especially towards the end of the day when you were in a spot with no light other than the sun. I don't shoot at night very often, but I do on occasion. What's your impression of the camera in low light?
It's not good in low light at all because it's a 1/2" sensor. The wider shots in low light in this video were shot on the Panasonic GH5 with a Voigtländer F0.95 lens. The HC-X1500 is basically a jack of all trades but master of none sort of camera. Autofocus is terrible FYI, I always use manual. But other than that the built in mic is great (except it's hard to block wind noise). Sometimes though, I'll just use the audio from the camera, though most of the time I am using the Rode Stereo Videomic X hooked into a TASCAM DR-70D in the XLR slots. The zoom and built in codecs are great. Good documentary camera. You could, of course also externally record to a Atomos Ninja or some other external recorder for better quality and color control, but I haven't done this yet. I'm mainly waiting another couple years to see if any new cameras come out that blow this one out of the water.
