i purchased the E373 to start learning the piano. I enjoyed playing with the accompaniment styles quite a lot, and somewhere along the way i developed a liking for learning classical pieces as well. At that point it became gradually apparent to me that 61 unweighted keys just wasn't enough - i simply could not develop the control and precision that only weighted keys can offer... and most of the classical pieces needed a full octave range of 88 keys. I then started looking for something with 88 weighted keys for classical pieces, but i still wanted something with quality arranger functions as well - but not way too over the top as with the likes of the Genos or the Montage which has way too many complex functions i probably wouldn't even use. Then i saw the DGX670 with all of its glorious features taken from higher-end flagship models and beautiful piano samples - it had everything i needed with 88 weighted keys and just the right level of quality, easy-to-use arranger functions (which is a significant improvement over my old E373's arranger samples). Really, it was a no-brainer purchase - best one i've ever made. Got the white variant of the DGX670 along with the dedicated stand and 3-pedal system - all of which looks reaaaaal nice at home - guests are quick to compliment it (especially the ladies ;) )

Just today I had the opportunity to lay hands on the DGX-670 and that was my impression. It was a Wow! moment. I am not a professional player, just enough to support my church's worship team. We also have a Roland Juno DS-88. Very good also,, but the DGX-670 has many basic enrichment features readily available and intuitive to get. I am happy, that without knowing, Jeremy had ranked this keyboard well on top.

Yamaha ought to release a "lite" version of those with no speakers, no wireless functions but with decent separated stereo LR output jacks. This will make it more lightweight and more suitable for live stage application.

Yes, needs a line out. Although, I think you could use USB out to a computer soundcard. Also could use a better keyboard with triple-sensor and matt key tops. Most reviewers seem immediately decide it's the best keyboard they've ever played because they're gaga over the sample quality, and a zillion extra settings which most people will never use, when it's obvious that there are shortcomings and useful features which were left out.

Okay, so I recently bought the Yamaha DGX-670 because it's the Portable Grand Piano series after saving enough money. This came after a year after my old Portable Grand Piano finally bit the dust after 10 years. It's been in 5 different houses/apartments.
What I wasn't expecting was an upgrade that was seriously mind-blowing, I didn't know what I was missing out on.

Thanks Jeremy for your very informative and nicely done review of the new DGX-670. It is one of the best vids on this topic that one can currently find on internet! After my own extensive research, last week I got one of the first DGX-680s in Poland and I must say I'm really impressed by how much functionality and top quality samples Yamaha put into this instrument at such relatively low price. I had a 38-year break in playing piano after completing the elementary music school that unfortunately disheartened me from performing music. These were different times - just stiff classical repertoire, no improvisation or arrangement, merely traces of music theory and harmony laid down in an inattractive way... Now my daughter has started to learn playing piano and so she has inspired me to get back to the keyboard. DGX-670 seems to be a sweet spot for us both. Greetings and enjoy playing music!

The speakers and the sound from them are really good.
The keyaction is very satisfying and dynamic.
However - as we have a very hot and moist summer in Denmark, my finges seems to glue to the blank white keys.
Some texture on the white keys would have been appropriated.

For performing, you can use a bluetooth stereo audio mixer. So you don't necessarily need left and right output. Also, I bought a portable stand with rollers and a three pedal attachment that just rests on the floor. You don't need that old-fashioned unmovable stand and hang down pedal. For gigs, you can easily roll it around. In any case, it's a great instrument.

The advantage of a heavier casing is the thumping sounds after pushing key down and the release does NOT make loud thumping sound. The lightweight keybaords, Studio Logic or Kurzweil and most other brands, I sent back after buying. So much thumping sound, loud, from other keyboards. The keybed in the Yamaha feels real to an acoustic and and much quieter because the keybed by Yamaha and the cabinet the keybed is in is better built. As mentioned, it is harder to carrey and if your in a band, you won't hear the thumping loud sound.

Thanks Jeremy for your honest and thorough review. I really think this dgx will be my next instrument, because it combines the elements of a clavinova, an arranger and a digital piano, at an affordable price. I loved the part where you warn us about how transportable it is without injuring our spinal discs, hehe. For these purposes, my PSR e463 is more practical, although I was surprised that it has the same speakers. I loved the functionalities and the look of its screen and how it looks on its pedestal with pedals.

A big thumbs up for this video! The instrument has been very well presented. To me, the major deal breaker is the lack of expandability - voice packs can’t be loaded. Also, no organ flutes. Aside from that, it took Yamaha 18 years to get the DGX to what it should have been from the get go. It’s a truly amazing offer now - a 88 key piano with modern arranger functions. And much, much cheaper than the Clavinova CVP

I wouldn't say it's master of none. I haven't heard anything that comes close at its price point in the US. Sure it's not absolutely premium, but it's affordable. The negative is the weight. I had a thee legged vintage Clavinova, and trust me that was difficult to move with two people.

I would say it is the master of none. It isn't a stand out in functionality in any particular way. It is well rounded but not tailored to a particular task. At its price point, it can't afford to be. For everything it does, you can find better focused keyboards that are better at the task they do. Even within Yamaha. YC-88, PSR-SX600, CP-88, and P-125 all better focused devices.

I am buying this specific keyboard on Amazon this weekend...since I am a long time member of Amazon Prime I get to pay for this keyboard with a $200.00 deposit before shipping and only $157.00 per month for 5 months. In my family there are tons of musicians and most are simply learners by ear and most never had any music classes or even know how to read musical notes. I am entry level as far as piano but I never put much effort into it and now that I am at that point and age in my life where I am more relaxed and settled down I will give it all I got to learn...and yes, learn by ear because in my family we don't need teachers or lessons or musical notes...we have natural talent to play instruments simply by ear and that is all we need.🎶🎹🎶😁

It's a good keyboard. I still have my DGX230 , 76 Key , it does have quality sound. I did carry that one around. DGX670 is cheap because it does not have sd card slot or little or no USB storage.Good thing is , if you set the left part accompaniment to 53 , then you have plenty of octaves to play on the right part of the keyboard due to 88 keys. You are unable to download any style packs on DGX670. Still outstanding keyboard is the Korg pa1000.

I have the DGX 670 (paid EUR 829 in the Netherlands) and thoroughly compared it with the PSR SX600. Also put it next to SX700 and SX900 in a store. After not having played piano and keyboard for 30 years, I leaned towards the DGX for the better digital piano features and 88 keys. I can really say the DGX is a great instrument. If you know keyboard/piano and music basics, the user interface is self explanatory, which I find quite an achievement, because historically you needed a manual next to you to get the most out of your instrument. The LCD-screen is great and buttons work faster than touch screen (so I don't miss that). The instrument feels high quality all around, for example the tactile buttons. An impressive job Yamaha really got right.
I read many worries about the speakers and 6w amplification, but because the speakers have large cavities where they sit in, the sound is very capable and of high quality. No worries there really. I did improve it for myself by adding a set of Yamaha HS-8 monitor speakers to it (already had these). In the menu, you can set that the onboard speakers and the headphones out line work at the same time. I blend volume of the onboard speakers and the HS-8 monitors 50/50 and that is an awesome and rich experience!
Things I like to see Yamaha do even better are: (1) get rid of the proprietary LP1-three pedal DIN-6-connector and replace with 3x 1/4 inch plugs. This way you can use 4 separate standard pedals or other switches. I did not want the LP-1 because I did not want the piano stand, but because of the connector, you can't go round the LP1. (2) Not including a line out at the back is not cool. (3) Give us 3 buttons for style intro and 3 buttons for style ending. It's a shame you have to go deep into settings to find the variations. (4) Midi to device is missing. (5) Add headphones jack in front AND keep in the rear.
Essentially, it would be awesome if Yamaha would remove the 'tension' between their DGX and PSR SX keyboards. What could be a great idea, is if they just take the SX600 platform and make that in 2 variations (light portable 61-key keyboard and somewhat less portable 88-key digital piano). And then keep the foundation identical. Then do the same thing with the PSR SX700 and SX900, and improve the quality of the piano keys from GHS to GH3 as you go up the range.
I really wanted to have the best of both worlds of the SX600 and DGX 670 and would have paid a couple of 100 extra to get it.
Nevertheless, an awesome piece of kit. Can't go wrong with this one!

Such an awesome analysis you made a year ago. I’d be interested in your opinion now and I would like to get your reply to some thoughts I have. I’m a big fan of Yamaha! But the biggest concern about the DGX-670 has to do with the key-bed itself. Right now, I’m playing on a P-105 and a Garritan VST. I understand that the DGX-670 uses the same key-bed as the P-125 (which I’m guessing, is the same as my P-105) My keys have become very noisy…. Clacky, would be the way I would describe them (plastic against plastic) and it’s kind of annoying! Though the accompaniment function of the 670 looks fun, I hesitate buying another keyboard with a toy-ish key-bed. (I wonder if Yamaha’s NWX (wooden keys) in their P-515 really are quieter or just a gimmick??) I’m guessing they are quieter. It seems like if the 670 had quieter wooden keys, it would be a grand slam!!
Aside from the that physical question, as neat as the “auto accompany” feature is, as an early intermediate jazz player, do you think it inhibits the player from learning “true solo playing”? Of course, I guess, you have the option to do both but it seems like “cheating.” What is your feeling about that?

Both are lovely instruments. However, this review has got me excited about the DGX670. My biggest concern is that the feel/touch might not be piano enough. But it seems that the keyboard has a pretty good feel. The Piano Room feature is a truly excellent feature. The many other features mean I can play both just the piano or have fun creating multi-featured arrangements. Thanks again and God bless!

Thank you @JeremySee for a such detailed review. My sons surprised me how quickly they learned to play in a few months (thanks to one such well-known "simply" application).
The current keyboard we have is the very, very old Casio CTK-631 :D . I wanted to buy a digital piano with weighted keys as soon as possible, but I wouldn't want to be minimalistic and buy a Yamaha YDP, I would like something more versatile to develop the boys' creativity (sequencer, styles).
I think buying the DGX-670 will be a good choice, don't you think?

  • @danieldougan269
    @danieldougan269 4 місяці тому

My DGX-650 still packs quite a punch. I'm still pretty happy with it 10+ years later. If you find a 650 or 660 on the used market, don't be scared away just because the 670 is better. The 650 and 660 are still great options. I think the built-in speakers are more than fine at home. If you are playing on stage, you should be plugged into an amp or PA system anyway. Does anyone play live gigs using the built-in speakers on their keyboard? If anything, I would have sacrificed speaker quality somewhat if it meant the keyboard weighed less and took up less depth.
I have the LP-7A three-pedal unit, and it's fine, although the new design is a definite improvement, and it means you can use it on a wider variety of stands without it sliding out of place.
Does it do everything I have ever wanted? No. But it does everything I need and then some.
The comment about the weight is true...this is certainly not a gigging keyboard. I wish they had made it lighter and more portable.
If I were in the market now, I might be inclined to buy a CK88 instead.
I do definitely agree about the music stand. I broke my original one and had to buy a replacement, but that has held up fine ever since.

Today I finally get to try a DGX-670 and P125 in a local store. The P125 has a keyboard that is not as good as the DGX-670, even though they both have GHS (Grand Hammer Standard), and I asked the Guitar sales guy and Piano sales guy at the store, and they both said they feel the DGX-670 is a better keyboard... the Roland RD-88 keyboard feel is even better, but the DGX-670 is close. The CFX sound on the DGX-670 is just beautiful, and no other pianos could match it for the few pianos I tried in the store. The Korg Kronos 2 had really really heavy keys and you kind of have to go through a "click" moment to play a note, so it felt like a heavy mouse click... (it has the same RH3 keybed as the Korg D1), but I suspect that it had a bad keyboard, perhaps abused in the store for a couple of years... but see... P125 is $700 and DGX-670 is $850, but has better sound, better keyboard, so if weight of the piano is not a concern, definitely go with DGX-670. Since I am thinking of getting a keyboard to play VST sounds, so I may still get a Roland FP-30X, FP-10 (same PHA-4 key as RD-88), or Korg D1... but setting up the VST, the computer, hook up to a speaker, is a bit of a trouble

I was wondering if the song sequencer has a copy & paste function? What about insert effects to each track? Perhaps such functionality is a bit too much to ask for at this price point & the absence of such, would not be a deal-breaker for me....but since I had sold my Korg Krome EX,I would miss the detailed song editing in the DGX.

This would be a great upgrade of a PSR-EW425 if you want/need 88 weighted keys, albeit, not as good as the newer key action systems you mentioned, though it may not be an issue for players such as myself, but the glaring drawback is the amplified speakers in comparison to those on the PSR-EW425.
The color display, piano room and arranger features on the display is a plus.
Also, when not needed, I like working with good quality microphones with the ¼" jacks. Of course, you could get both ¼" and XLR cables if you want to use the same microphone.
I guess this piano was not designed and intended for gigging and portability.
Again, you always close each video doing well to help viewers to consider all the features, price, playability and other important factors to help them to decide if each keyboard would be a suitable choice to purchase for them.
