- Marcus Leshock of WGN Morning News in Chicago gets a rare DOUBLE ROLLBACK on Top Thrill Dragster roller coaster at Cedar Point. The ride was renamed "Top Thrill Cubster" for opening weekend in 2017, after the park lost a bet when the Cubs beat the Indians in the World Series. #CoastinTheCountry

@@Nx553 Then why is everyone else on the ride chill and enjoying it. Society sets the range for 'normal'. So if everyone on that ride is acting a certain way, or within reason to one another, but his reaction is above and beyond the rest, he is thus "over reacting". Anyone sitting next to him or near him, especially me, could and should be pissed off. I find it hard to enjoy a ride when you have that 1 person 'excessively' yelling, screaming, or being abnormally loud and hurting my ears and taking away from the enjoyment and I think most people agree. This dude was annoying ass fuck. And all those people that had the luck of getting 2 rollbacks now have the experience ruined by some asshole that wants to look cool for the camera.

Its insanely rare to get just 1 rollback, that's amazing to get a double rollback. Lucky!
There's a good chance they're doing it earlier in the day, from what I've heard, when they start up the ride, the computers need to calibrate themselves to give _just_ enough speed to go over the top. It's especially tricky since the required speed varies depending on their weight. Odds are that the computer was still calibrating when they rode it.
Unlike kingda ka, rollbacks on top thrill dragster are common. There are at least three to four rollbacks on dragster a day. But it is rare to get two in a row.

Happened to me when I went in May of 2018. Rolled back twice while my gf and I went on it again on our second day of visiting right around when Steel Vengeance opened up. Unfortunately the lines for Vengeance were extremely long (8-12 hour wait times) we did enjoy every other ride with a fast pass though.

Try riding first thing in the morning on a cold day. When coaster rails are cold, it's much more likely to rollback.

I got pressured into riding this for the first time in 2006, it had rained earlier that night and we got a double rollback. I had the time of my life and stopped being a wuss when it came to coasters. Truly a euphoric experience.

@@greycarton Lol this type of ride wasn't in the Roller Coaster Tycoon games until the 3rd one. Naturally being a 20 year old computer game, tragedy often struck when coaster trains collided and such.
Top Thrill Dragster is 100% designed for rollbacks because it has to be. They are more common in the cold weather or early in the morning, especially when the trains don't have many riders. The lack of momentum sometimes isn't enough to go over the top hat. That's why all of those brakes go down before the launch, they are there to slow down the train in the case of a rollback so they pop back up after the train clears the launch track. If it happens, the system resets and relaunches the train a little bit faster to help it clear the top hat. Having it happen twice in a row like this is rare though and it looks like a cold day based on their coats! This coaster is basically "too safe" with all of it's sensors which is why it sees a good amount of down time. So no worries, a rollback is cool because you get to experience the launch again let alone go backwards down the tower. Most people don't get to experience that.

I worked at cedar point the year this ride opened, and I use to drive in in the morning and see how many times the coaster would actually make it over when they were testing it. Seeing it roll back twice with riders is really crazy.

Fun fact: my first time riding this ride was a rollback. It’s a pretty uncommon thing, especially on a first ride. I remember telling my dad ‘is this supposed to happen’ it was super scary but fun. I still love roller coasters and I rode it again the next chance I could.
I'm so glad I got to know that the rollbacks are safe, because if I ever went on this ride and it did that, I'd be giving off my last players and waiting for instant death lmfao

I had a Rollback a few years ago. I couldn't speak because of shock, then ended up in tears and clapping because of the excitement. It was my first time at Cedar Point so thank you Dragster for making it even more memorable. I was there to ride Millennium, but that added to the unforgettable day.

2:00 You notice how the back two cars aren't filled ; ) They got rollbacks because it was a cold morning. I have one rollback. I didn't scream like a little girl. It feels like your back's going thru the seat. It's very smooth. The second time they launched us without sound effects. Just the zip of the cable. Pretty cool.

This happened to my cousin and I once! It was seriously the best. It's pretty sweet that they actually include it on the new version!
I was in line for Pipe Scream, a little ride, one time, and me and my friends dream was to see Top Thrill Dragster go backwards. So we were all patiently waiting for our ride, and suddenly I hear Top Thrill take off. My friend looks back at it and all of a sudden, he yells, “TOP THRILL DRAGSTER’S GOING BACKWARDS!” The whole line is startled as they quickly turn around and see the car slow at the top, and fall back. It was one of my best experiences at that park EVER. Despite its failure we did go on Top Thrill Dragster later that day and it was a success. Also one of the best rides in the park! So yeah, don’t be scared of that one, it only falls backward every one in FIVE HUNDRED RIDES, so I recommend you give it a try!

I rode this the year it opened. When I saw it roll back I was super nervous because I thought the ride was broken. Seeing this now makes me wish I'd gotten a rollback now.

Man I would KILL for a double rollback! One of the best rides there, but gotta say Millennium Force is still a more "complete" coaster. Steel Vengeance is legit though, couldn't stop laughing it was so nuts. Raptor, however, will always be my first love. They quieted it down this year which stinks, you used to be able to hear it roaring all the way across the park.
I love the sound it makes breaking the cars coming back from a rollback.

Got a rollback for first time last Sunday. The train was only half filled since it was an extreme dead day (there were supposed to be severe storms all day but it only rained from like 9:30 to 11:00 in the morning and then it was beautiful outside all the way to closing). The noobs who wanted front seat refused to sit in the empty seats and they missed it lol. They were so upset! It made me laugh so hard. Ours just barely rolled back too because it stopped at the top for several long seconds before rolling back. Once the brakes stopped it, it took a million years to slowly roll backwards all the way to the station. I wonder if they did the rollback on purpose. I do know they can, and the way they asked the people in line for front seat if they wanted to get on right then was very suspicious. They said, "Does anyone want to get on the purple train RIGHT... NOW...?" Have been dreaming of a rollback forever and never thought I would ever get one. It was so great! I love it!! It still feels unreal!!!

My analysis - to create a rollback - you set the launch max speed at Top Thrill less than the full circuit so when the train cars rocket up on that first part of the climb, it actually stops just before the apex of the arch at the top, and then gravity takes over and the train cars drop backwards. Safety mechanisms brake the cars just before the starting line area to avoid collisions with other car groups.
Keenly, this was inspired by Great America's "Tidal Wave" shuttle rollercoaster, which launches you into a loop and then a vert up with a freeze, and then you go backwards doing that loop again backwards into a straightaway into another vert up with a freeze (in the other direction), and then you go back down on the straightaway and that's it.
So seeing the Tidal Wave coaster myself gave me an example of how rollbacks in rollercoasters work.
Very sad that the "Tidal Wave" coaster was dismantled. We will miss that coaster.

@@greycarton It has been known to get stuck at the top, and they have a really high tech solution for when it happens. Someone climbs the maintenance ladder to the top and gives the coaster a good hard shove. I'm not making this up, they really do. 🤣

I watched this thing go probably 20 times before I rode it I was completely terrified of it going back down the hill but when I finally did get talked into it someone said you wont even have time to get scared and they were right as soon as the light hits green you are gone and at the top of the hill before you can get scared I rode it 2 more times after one of the best rides I ever experienced
This is the kind of excitement coaster designers think they’ll be getting out of the riders when they’re designing them

@@duderRechthat Actually more weight gives it more momentum and helps it make it over the top. In fact, there's a "launch boost" function that must be used when launching it empty, to keep it from rolling back.

IIRC it has 2 block sections outside the station, one after brake run and one before station, don't quote me but it does have at least one section that is from launch to after coming back down.

I have seen it happen when its been windy! I was so close and was next on to get a roll back myself but management came over and closed the ride after multiple attempts of it not making it over.

Rest In Peace, Dragster. It will be closed for the 2022 season. That means that its final days are at hand. If a coaster is closed down for more than one season, tradition dictates that it will be torn down in a couple of years. And Cedar Point’s skyline will be missing something. So again I say Rest In Peace, Top Thrill Dragster. You were the best coaster I ever rode in my life. I wish that I was wrong and that you’ll be running like clockwork next year, but that’s not likely to happen. It’d be nice to see you run again, and I’d rather be wrong about you being torn down, but…just like I’ve been wrong before, I’ve also been right before. Until I learn otherwise, Top Thrill Dragster is dead.

Definitely. Rollbacks are _extremely_ rare as it is, but a double rollback? I'm pretty sure that's never even happened before. And it just happened to be right when they had cameras all over the ride? Very suspicious. Not to mention, the second time they rolled back, the train didn't even come close to making it over the hill. I've never seen a rollback like that.

Max S. There isn’t a way to plan a roll back it just depends on the wind. They only kept shooting it because they have to try 2 times after the first roll back and if it doesn’t make it over on the 3rd attempt up then they have to close the ride until the winds go down.
