    Nice color in the mix but you might mention on the next epoxy videos using the West System epoxy that the cured epxoy releases a wax surface skin which needs to be washed off before sanding (clogs the hell out of the sandpaper) and finish products might not adhere to the epoxy.

    Hello thanks for this amazing video. Is the marble-like pattern because of the specification of the pigment or is there any other way to get this effect ? Cheers.

    • @AdvantageLumber
      @AdvantageLumber  5 років тому +2

      The marble like swirling you see will naturally occur when using the pigment we specify. If you do want a solid consistent color without the swirling you need a liquid dye.

    Can those colorants be mixed to achieve a custom color? If so, would I want to first mix the powders together separately in a dry bowl, or could I get away with dumping both/all colorants directly into epoxy and blend from there? Does that stuff blend together as well as paint does? Thanks 👍🏻

    • @AdvantageLumber
      @AdvantageLumber  Рік тому

      Yes you can mix different colors . Check the color in a clear cup. Add the colorant slowly, you can always add more but you can't take away.

    Realise this is 2 years old but I have a question. If the epoxy colour runs onto the area surrounding the void will that permanently stain the wood or should that be able to sand off and just leave the resin in the void ? Thanks

    • @AdvantageLumber
      @AdvantageLumber  3 роки тому +1

      It won't stain the wood. You would plane and sand off the excess resin after its cured.

    Can i use a heat gun instead of a flaming torch

    • @AdvantageLumber
      @AdvantageLumber  2 роки тому +1

      You can use a heat gun but be very careful because it will move the epoxy around. Use a butane torch but move the torch very quickly because epoxy can burn. You'll find it doesn't take much at all to pop the bubbles.

    it’s difficult to find a video that shows the west 207 mix ratio for what you’re doing...thanks so much! Is this ratio something you came up with after trial and error?

    • @AdvantageLumber
      @AdvantageLumber  4 роки тому

      The ratio comes from West System and is automatically the proper ratio when you use their pumps so it makes it much easier. If you want to do a deep pour river table we recommend using WiseBond Deep Pour epoxy.

    • @tabletopchef
      @tabletopchef 4 роки тому +1

      Thanks so much for taking time to reply! I just received my west system 207 and the ratio stated is a 3 part resin to 1 part hardener. I’m pouring small voids no deeper then 1” (much like your video) In your instruction you’ve used a 1 to 1 ratio. It’s expensive stuff to trail and error test runs, so I thought I would clarify. Many thanks in advance if you take time to reply!

      Resin is an expoxy I think

    • @AdvantageLumber
      @AdvantageLumber  3 роки тому

      Yes, it is different than polyester resin, which is what is used on boats. Epoxy for boats has that harsh chemical scent. This epoxy resin shown in the video needs to be mixed with a hardener. It is also nearly odorless.

    • @scottgorman7166
      @scottgorman7166 2 роки тому

      The epoxy used in this video is a marine grade epoxy resin.which has to be protected from the UV rays of the sun. Either painted over or use of a varnish. As stated below in Tobies response polyster is a different chemical make up but is still a resin

    Why doesn’t the epoxy catch on fire ?

    • @AdvantageLumber
      @AdvantageLumber  3 роки тому

      Certain epoxies can only be poured very thin otherwise the exothermic reaction becomes so strong they can catch on fire. If you are looking to pour deeper epoxy all at once we recommend using WiseBond Deep Pour epoxy. You can pour up to 2 inches thick in one pour it has a slower reaction and curing time so you don't have to worry about it heating up too much, it's the best epoxy we've tried for pouring epoxy river tables.

    Why did my epoxy foam up? It looked like elephant toothpaste.

    • @AdvantageLumber
      @AdvantageLumber  3 роки тому

      You might be using a cheap epoxy or you are trying to pour too much at once. Some epoxies can only be poured in thin layers if you pour them too thick or deep it heats up too much and produces lots of bubbles and foam in some cases they can heat up enough and catch fire. If you are trying to pour deep rivers we recommend WiseBond Deep Pour Epoxy.

      This type of Epoxy doesn't have any solvents or significant vapors. Some of them you can barely even smell. It's most important to keep it off your skin.

  • @coloreddreams630
    @coloreddreams630 4 роки тому

    shouldnt you be using a mask?

    • @AdvantageLumber
      @AdvantageLumber  4 роки тому

      It does not really give off fumes and we are doing this in a professionally ventilated workshop. You'll see when he's spraying the clear coat finish on he's using a ventilator as that's much more harmful. If someone is very sensitive though they can and should wear a ventilator when mixing epoxy.
