FUN FACT: The director of this film, Denis Villeneuve, spent a year perfecting the Sandworm design! According to a interview with Empire magazine (www.slashfilm.com/dune-sandworms-design-denis-villeneuve/), the director said he and the effects team spent a full year perfecting the look of the creatures.
“We talked about every little detail that would make such a beast possible, from the texture of the skin, to the way the mouth opens, to the system to eat its food in the sand,” Villeneuve said. “It was a year of work to design and to find the perfect shape that looked prehistoric enough.”

I dare to say that there might be partial hidden explanation as to where Sandworms are from if we look at the invasive species angle. If they were brought in as a plankton or trout, either on purpose or otherwise, they would not have natural predators on Arrakis. What does that imply? On their planet of origin the creatures have natural predators and diseases that control their population so that it doesn't become a problem. But that also means that such planet isn't a massive dessert planet like Arrakis. But when the Sandworms arrived on Arrakis they encountered no such problem, hence exploding in population over prolonged period of time.
