💡💡💡💡💡 To harden the wires used as the frame for wrapping/making the sun/starbursts, hold each end of the wire with pliers, pull tight and twist in opposite directions until wire is firm enough. Hammering can flatten and distort the wire whereas twisting will harden and maintain the round shape. That's the technique I use for hardening bare soft copper round wire for this and other projects. Sorry for posting so many different comments but I LOVE THIS TUTORIAL ❤❤♥️ and I wanted to share this helpful tip. I can't thank you enough for sharing this video. It's one of my absolute favorites!👍♥️😊
Through trial and error I discovered something that might be helpful to anyone who accidentally messes up the frame like I did once. I overworked and distorted my wire frame that has the rays and holds the stone in place. I was able to GENTLY and VERY CAREFULLY slip the rays off the distorted wire and slip them onto a new piece of wire so don't get discouraged if you mess up. It CAN be fixed without remaking the rays as long as you don't mess up the rays. Also, using 24g or 26g round wire, I made all 10 rays needed by wrapping 4 to 6 extra wraps in between the two sets of 5 rays and cut between the sets to separate them so I wouldn't have to start from the beginning to make the rays for the 2nd earring (if that makes sense). Thank you again for this tutorial. I absolutely love these beautiful earrings and I'm making another pair in rose gold with an aqua blue CZ stone to gift!♥️♥️♥️
I headed out to the hardware store and bought a clamp, thanks to you. My arthritic hands are happy now. Love the earrings too, simply beautiful. Thank you dear!! 🙋♥️✝️🇺🇲
@@ellieshandcrafted you deserve the thanks, and happy you have a baby!! Loved it, they are precious and the clamp really helped me. I don't have flat backs, darn. Checking out my head stash looking for something that might fit. ;) Have a great day dear 🙋♥️✝️🇺🇲
Oh wow! I use to make these using beads and all round wire. I can't wait to try with gemstones & cabochons. I love this variation! It's more elegant! Thanks, Elizabeth!
I absolutely love this design! I happen to have a lot of sterling silver in round, half round and square. I also have many Swarovski flat and pointed back chatons that I wanted to bezel but not with beads. I am so excited to try your design! It has an Art Deco feel to it ( my favorite style 😉) Thank you and now you have a new sub!!!
Thank you for the tutorial, I've been wanting to try this and you made it very easy to follow. I just wanted to add, after making one and struggling to thread the rays onto a new wire, I tried using the wire I wanted in the weave. I put the longer wire I was going to use for the sun and put it on the bottom. Then I only had to remove the other 3 wires and the one that was left I used for the design.
Great tutorial. Very well explained. If using dead soft wire for the frame, would it be best to secure the bottom of the wires going around the stone in the front and back with the 28g wire so they don't get pulled loose from the stone? Trying to use wire I have on hand but want to make sure stone stays secure. Love your videos!
Thank you! I did use 28 gauge to secure some of my earlier pieces, especially on my pendants, but I figured that earrings don't generally have as much wear on them since they hang from your earlobe. So far, I haven't had any issues. However, if you worry about the securing the stone, by all means secure them! :) Hope that helps and thanks for watching!
@@ellieshandcrafted Thanks for the reply. I want to try it for a pendant. I have some cabs that don't match enough to make earrings and have been trying to decide how to wrap such a small cab. This is going to be fun.
This is a very pretty design. I am new to working with wire. I have dead soft wire. Will I be able to use it to make these or is it too soft? Thank you for your easy to follow tutorial.
Thanks so much! I do use dead soft and it holds very well. You can also use full round instead of half round if you'd like it to be a little sturdier. 😉
I would add a couple inches at least to the base wire length and another 3-4 inches of half round. And then, instead of 5 rays, make 6. That should make it all the way around. Hope that helps!
These are beautiful I can’t wait to try! I’m getting set up now but in the video you did not tell us how many inches of 22 gauge half round wire to use and over in the notes it says 12 inches times two. Is that really enough to make those five stars?
Thanks so much! Yes, it's 12 inches of wire for each earring. I know that it doesn't sound like quite enough, but I promise you it is! :) Just be sure to start the rays at about an inch from the top to be sure it reaches the end. ;)
I may have commented before. If so, it's because I absolutely love these earrings (and memory fails me - LOL!)! ❤❤❤ I'm going to make a pair for myself and my friend for Christmas but I'm curious... how secure is the stone?❓ Did you use half hard wire?❓ Shouldn't a very tiny amount of glue be added to the back side of the stone where it touches the wire or would that mess up the appearance?❓ I've securely set 8mm rounds in a coil setting. My 8mm rounds just snapped into place in the coil but since the stone just sits in the star, I just wanted to ask is it secure enough? I can be fairly rough with my jewelry at times. 😂 Thanks for sharing this beautiful tutorial! I have a bunch of 6mm CZ's and can hardly wait to make a pair!😃
You certainly can use half hard wire for some added sturdiness. If I’m worried about the stone popping out, I’ll secure the framing wire with some weaving wire so that it can’t lift. I don’t use glue, because it can fail over time… 😅 I hope that helps! And thank you for your kind words! 🥰

I would just add at least 2-3 inches to the measurements. You'll probably have a set of 6 rays instead of 5, but they'll still look beautiful. 😉

@@ellieshandcrafted thx a lot 🥰
@@rorok4201 You're welcome!
Love the design! How long are your base wires if you are working with 6mm stone?
For 6mm stones, you'll need two 7 inch segments of wire. Hope that helps!
@@ellieshandcrafted What about the length of the 4 wires you wrap the "rays" on? Thanks
@@mtgwin4 oh, I see what you mean. I used 18 gauge wire that were probably 4-5 inches long. They're also half hard so they don't bend as much. 😊
@@ellieshandcrafted Thanks!
I can't make out what you said was an alternative to using a clamp. What was it, again?
Painter's or Masking tape. :) You can also use a ring clamp. Both are really handy!
Does anybody know the specific name of the tool she bought from the hardware store? Haven't had any luck trying to find it online
I believe they are called spring clamps
They are spring clamps. 😊👍
Are the wires soft?
Yes. All the wires, except the base wires used to make the rays are dead soft. :) Hope that helps!
Hi Ellie 😊can I use 8 mm on these?
You should be able to. You may want to add an inch or so in wire and you may have to do another set of rays. But it’s definitely doable. ☺️
