"I learnt in that in the trenches' LITERALLY FELT THAT. Some things are all through experience, its the best way of learning and we will never be perfect! I think what I love the most about teaching is the fact that every single day I grow as a person.
I started as a substitute today for 8th grade. It was a last minute thing, as in literally I was just notified yesterday 😂. Today was wild, not gonna lie, I cried when I got home. This video made me feel so much better about the days to come. I'll definitely try your techniques, thank you!
I have been teaching middle school for 17 years and I have to say, this was a good reminder for me! I rarely have behavior issues in my class, mainly because I do follow a lot of the tips that you suggested. I have never used the post it note method, I am going to try that! I am the department chair of my school (science) and I think I am going to share this with my fellow teachers!! Awesome video!
I think I learned more from this video about classroom management than I did in my entire teaching degree. Thanks for making this video...I'm saving it to watch again and again when I need reminders about classroom management.
Finally a High School teacher that I can relate to. Thank you so much for your advice and videos. I have been checking a lot of teacher videos out, but unfortunately a majority on You tube are elementary. They have a lot of great advice and information, but have not found any that I can relate to until now. I will be a first year High School Social Studies teacher starting in August, and it will be a second career for me. I am so excited and yet very nervous about my first day. I recently received all of my books and other things, and it is a lot of information to soak in. Your channel has helped so much. Thank you!
YAAAY! Thank you so much for watching and commenting! You're going to to great. Take your planning one week at a time. Once August starts approaching I am going to post a lot more videos on how to prepare for the new year. Thanks again!!!
Jeff Ballad .. Same here, man! I love those primary teachers' contents but only few to no good for my classroom, tho really, they are great in their own respect. So yeah, finally, someone that we, secondary teachers can relate to. btw, I'm teaching 8th grade English here in the Philippines. 😊❤ Amanda, this was just your 2nd video that I watch and I am already loving 'em and you! 😊😉 Keep them coming! 👍👍
So true! Thank you so much for a video about class management in High School! I have taught in high school and middle school and am still learning to gain confidence and control of and respect from my students
I’ve taught high school math for 4 years and I’m still learning classroom management best practices. I find what works one year does not always work with the next bunch of students you receive the next year. Thank you for some awesome tips! I can definitely implement some of these in my classroom.
I love your videos. I’m doing my internship in a high school now, and it is a struggle being young (24) and finding that balance of being friendly and firm.
This is my first year as a high school teacher. I did a full year as a student-teacher then full-time sub last year. Your videos help a lot w/ all sorts of various tips. Thank you
Number five is critical, in ministry as well. I just can't tell people, what Christ has said ONCE. I have to remind them constantly, and be consistently LIVING it as well. You are a blessing!🙏🏼🤍
I've been nodding my head and snapping my fingers with full, 100% agreements! I never experienced your educational setting, but you set the tone for all teachers that classroom management is a huge key for not only teachers to successfully teach, but seeing the growth of students. Thanks for sharing!
Andrea THANK YOU so much for your kind words! Its definitely not a walk in the 'park but we can make it work! I would love for you to comment back if you have any other ideas related to teaching and also check out my video "How I Survive Teaching High School in NYC" if you haven't already. Thanks again for your subscription and comment!
This was so helpful! I've taught in a challenging high school in Australia for 12 years. I had 4 years off to have my babies and have just returned in Janurary and I forgot how hard it is. I feel like I'm a new teacher again. A lot has changed and the juggle with being a mum and being a good teacher is much harder than I expected. Thank you for your insights. I would love to see more teaching vids!
Haylee!!! This is so real! I cannot imagine being away for 4 years. I feel like year to year it’s so different between the new education jargon and student expectations! I commend you sooo much for coming back and sticking with it! I can only imagine juggling mommy hood and being a teacher!! I am sure you’re doing a WAY better job then you’re giving yourself credit for! Thank you so much for enjoying my videos and I hope to make more soon!
I survived my 1st year as a high school teacher this year. You made some very valid points. Please continue to make these videos. I wish someone would have told me these things.lol
Yay Congrats on your first year! Thats a big deal and thank you so much for liking my videos and watching them! I will definitely try to make more, if you haven't already, I have a few others: 10 things i wish i knew before i started teaching, How I Survive teaching in NYC, 5 Things every teacher Should Do Before the end of the School Year
I graduated college in December to be a high school English teacher. Since then, I have just returned to my job as a grocery manager at a local store. The original plan was to secure a teaching job at the beginning of the next school year in August, but the longer I spend away from school, the more insecure I get about my abilities to teach and to interact with the students. I loved it during my student-teaching experience, but now I am afraid I will never have to courage to become a teacher because I am afraid to fail
Hey Nicole, I totally feel you! I'm about to move back to the states to teach at an inner city middle school after being a kindergarten English teacher in China for 4 years and I'm also really nervous about connecting with the students. BUT just do it. Mistakes will happen without a doubt and if you really want it to work you will find solutions to those mistakes and become the teacher you want to be. Embrace the fear! That's where the most growth happens. Good luck. You can do it! Here's some yoga you can try for a confidence boost. ua-cam.com/video/xEyyu7kk0ZI/v-deo.html
Hi Nicole, I don't know if you will ever read this message, but hopefully, you took the plunge. No one is born knowing how to be the PERFECT teacher. But think of this---what if you have an incredible ability to teach (that you can perfect over time) and there are kids that are waiting for a teacher like you? Don't miss out on something you may be meant to do because of fear! We have all screwed up at one time or another, and here we are, years later, a lot wiser and better for it! Good luck!
“I got a mouth” omg me too girl. I’m an elementary education major seeking a middle school endorsement in spanish. This year I started teaching ccd to get classroom experience and yes I love what I do, but that doesn’t mean I don’t get frustrated with negative behavior lol. Even though you teach hs, a lot of this still applies so I’m glad I found this channel :)
These are amazing tips!!! In a few weeks I will start teaching 8th grade U.S. History ...I am extremely nervous but your videos have given me so many ideas as to what type of teacher I want to be for my students, thank you so much!
Wow! Great recommendations. I just graduated and will be teaching my first classroom as an intern in a few months. I love your energy and the example scenarios you provided with your tips. I normally click a video and move on if I’m not captured, but what you had to offer really kept me engaged. Definitely a new subscriber. Keep up the good work.
I liked the video before i even finished it 😂 But honestly your channel as a whole has helped me so much. I'm subscribed to a lot of the teachers here on youtube but many of them are Elementary teachers. I switched last semester, after I decided to shadow in a high school class, to Secondary Ed and got exposed to that atmosphere. I NEVER thought i would have fallen in love as much as i did but now i need a lot of help! I feel like Elementary Ed has a lot more aid versus Seconday Ed. But again, your channel has helped so much already! I loveeee all of your content.
You're sooo cute! And I agree, there are a ton of resources on here for elementary school. I am so glad you have found these helpful and I am thankful that I listened to friends who encouraged me to start teaching videos. AND YOU SEE!!! So many can't see themselves doing the older students and then they are sooo pleasantly surprised! As your career continues and there are things that come to mind that I could talk about, please leave a comment and mention it,I'd love to know how else to help. Thanks again!!
Yesss! You are amazing at conveying your ideas so I know you're a great teacher! This semester I'm going to be shadowing more so if I have any questions, I'm definitely going to ask you!! I shadow at a Title 1 with predominantly hispanic students and I did watch your video where you mentioned that you dont speak spanish but its a great skill to have, and i agree on the entirely. So many student are coming from Puerto Rico to Orlando after Maria hit and some know little to no spanish so I help around a lot. Again thank youuu!!
I'm teaching in Colombia and have had many experiences trying to improve my classroom management. It is not easy and I feel like it also is affected by school context. Different schools have different styles and curriculum and cultures. I really appreciate your guidance and advice. I love high school but I love even more the sweetness of elementary school students
Wow, these are amazing! Thank you so much for sharing! I teach adults in a trade school and am going to a high school next year. I'm nervous but I'm so excited about it!
You are the best! I love your videos and down to earth advice. You are spot on! I love having them practice. Music is an amazing way to get the attention. You have a beautiful voice that gets attention too. You speak clearly and you are speaking slowly enough to be understood. From a Florida southern girl, I love the NYC directness
Aw! Kristin thank you so much! Your comment is so sweet Thank you for watching the videos, I am glad they are helpful and that some are even things you use as well. And Yes! Hello from this direct NYC chick to a Florida southern girl!
Love these tips! I'm about to start my 2nd year of teaching high school in NYC public schools. I started in November last year, so starting after the school year began was super tough when it came to classroom management. I'm excited to be able to have somewhat of a fresh start this year!
YAY! Good luck this year! Don't forget to always assume the best of the students. The way you view the classroom and their motives will make such a big difference in how you implement these strategies.
It is my first time to watch your video. I am also a teacher. My students are at around 14~16 and they are beyond our imagination... To manage them, I implemented many many ideas. Now I am gonna use your tips as well. Thx♡
These are really nice tips. They are simple but golden. I can relate so much to everything that you say. Indeed, teaching is not just about content. Classroom management is the law of the education.
Thanks so much Amanda for all your helpful videos! I just started emergency subbing this month and it has been fun and crazy at the same time. Classroom management is like a tightrope walk. I am not afraid to tell students no, but sometimes I think I make mistakes about how to approach discipline so the negative behavior isn't recurring. Its essential to put yourself in the mind of the kid -- what would I have thought as a kid of my methods to correct behavior? Positive reinforcement, or merely neutral talk with the student (depending on severity of poor behavior) has been beneficial but sometimes I am not positively reinforcing enough! I don't want them to not like me to the point that my efforts will make it worse, including the overall classroom environment. Wow it is tough to navigate!
Yes! I agree! It is just a tricky thing to manage and comes with A LOT of trial and error. I've made many mistakes in the past and escalated situations that I shouldn't have. The best part is that you're already self-reflecting and thats key for improvement and true relationship in the classroom
Thanks for your input!!! I just started college to get my bachelors in Sped, and I believe we learn this classroom management hands on. No student, school or teacher will be the same and until we are in the moment with trial and errors that's when we learn. I also feel that the repetitions of expectations should be used at home!!! What a twist I took from this. Someone on the comments mentioned Jesus and yes that is true. Constant reminder of what Jesus has done for us, reminder of expectations, reminders of home expectations. Thanks
I‘m so glad I found your channel! Love the way you explain things! 😍 I‘m a first year teacher in Germany where I teach Middle School and High School as it is combined here. I have one very difficult class that I love teaching, but they do drive me crazy every now and then. I especially like the idea of writing post it notes. Thanks for that! I‘ll try it out. And oh yes, timers! When I got one, I never thought they would react so well to it. I also use it to challenge the kids to team up in groups in less than a minute and things like that. Otherwise it takes them forever. Setting a timer somehow turns it into a game. Works in any grade, it‘s weird. 😄 I‘m looking forward to more of your videos! ❤️
Wow teaching in Germany? That's so awesome! I have a class like that too, they are a really excited bunch but sometimes keeping them on task can be so hard! Yup, the post it notes make like so easy and thats such a good point about the timers! Getting them into groups, who ever can do it the fastest becomes a game. Adding light hearted competition is always a win. Thank you so much for watching and supporting my channel, I appreciate it so so so much!!
This video was so helpful! I was nervous about correcting a student's negative/inappropriate behaviour as well, I am still studying/am a pre-service teacher so I still am learning how to affectively do it. :)
Amanda Rose, thank you so much for sharing your strategies -- your passion comes through and you're giving us great tools. I'm new to your vids but I'll keep watching from New Zealand. Thank you again!
Your videos are brilliant, I finally feel like I have found a teacher I can relate to! Do you think you'll do a video about the first day/ week of school and setting expectations? Im so aware how important it is but its definetely my biggest fear! Thanks for all your AMAZING advice! I think I'll be watching these weekly.
Thank you so much for watching the videos. And yes, I definitely want to do a video on the first day-first week of school. I will be working on that very soon!
Yay 🙌 you saw my comment. I'm trying to figure how many years of teaching it would take to offset the cost of tuition. I know you teach high schoolers. Is there a big difference in salary between teaching high schoolers versus elementary school where you are? What about teaching grade 8 versus teaching grade 3?
Thanks for the tips Amanda, I took note of a few of your ideas! I esp. love the idea of a "countdown background song" for think-pair-share type of stuff...
Great video! What are your classroom rules? Do you provide any warnings and what are the consequences after rules have been broken (ex.: detention, filling out a behavior reflection sheet, contact parents, sent to the Office, etc.)
I am so glad this helped! I want to really come up with an etnire series on my channel for this. Definitely have to start brainstorming and get that in the works! Thank you so much for the support!
I really love the ideas in this video!! Hope to see more teaching videos!! Coming from a teaching student in Australia, you seem like an awesome teacher xx
Thank you SO MUCH Stacey! I am glad this video was helpful and thank you so much for Subscribing. I am definitely working on another teaching video very soon!
Thank you for this!! You explained the strategies well and clear. I'm looking forward to more teaching videos from you as I need more HS teaching tips and ideas.
Veronica, thank you for commenting and I am so glad that the tips were helpful! I just recently posted one on how to build relationships and keep a look out for my next one- my top 5 favorite activities to use in the classroom
I had a small portion of classes on classes on classroom management (still in school) the teacher said that you should spend at least the first week setting up classroom management
The cell, the student that's on medication, the high risks students. Thanks for the insight because I'm a nice teacher by default. Yes a ppl pleaser and I hate it. But I'm not push over as I too have a sharp tongue and capable.
I love your energy I liked subscribed and turn on the Bell notifications I love your teaching videos and since I knew I don't know if you've done this or not but could you make so New York City videos
This was such a helpful video! I am a student secondary teacher from Australia in my third year. What are your subject areas? Mine are English, history and society and culture. Like you have stated, you don't learn these skills and tactics at university - you learn them whilst actually teaching. I plan to do a professional experience overseas, however my university provides no guidance, and I must form my own connections to a school and mentor teacher. I hope I can find a mentor willing to take on an Australian student. Is this something you have ever considered or would be open to? Your videos have already helped me develop my confidence as a young teacher :)
Hi Natash! Thank you foe watching my videos and taking the time to write such a long comment. My subject area is Social Studies. In my career I have taught Global History, American History, Economics Participation in Government and Current Events. I am sure it is a very different experience teaching internationally. Usually the school you work at will connect you to a more experienced teacher and they will serve as a mentor
I really like the idea of including a student of the week! I was given two Global 1 classes and 2 participation in Government classes as well as an advisory class which is separate thing in itself. However, I'm thinking of ways to name it and I am struggling a bit, but definitely open to suggestions. Maybe for Global 1 I can still say "historian of the week" but for participation in government it would just feel really off to say "civilian of the week." Do you have any suggestions for someone is starting her first year in teaching?
For Government I used to say Politician of the week, Citizen of the week. Global you can have a bit more fun depending on what you focused on for the week, Historian, Geographer, Archeologist.
Hi Amanda, thank you for your classroom related videos. I am prepping to become a CTE Business teacher for high school kids and just watched your video about the first year and am starting to watch this one now. :) I know it's been a while since you have started teaching, but do you remember how your first day went? first day, first week, first month? Would you be able to make a video about those firsts? I just can't imagine how would it be to get there, the first time. lol I know you had student teaching.. which means you got some practice.. I won't have that. Just practicum at the end of my certification.. but just throwing an idea that would be reaaaaally helpful. Thank you!! :)
Hey! Thanks for watching and for leaving a comment. If any ideas come to mind for what you will like to see next, please feel free to share. I'm definitely coming up with ideas to have a teaching video out real soon!
God bless you. I am a first year teacher and classroom management is definitely one of my weaknesses.
"I learnt in that in the trenches' LITERALLY FELT THAT. Some things are all through experience, its the best way of learning and we will never be perfect! I think what I love the most about teaching is the fact that every single day I grow as a person.

I love that your not about embarrassing them. As a student I know I would have appreciated that from certain teachers back then.
Yes! I would be mortified if a teacher did that to me. With my personality-that would not work and a teacher would definitely lose my trust
I've been nodding my head and snapping my fingers with full, 100% agreements! I never experienced your educational setting, but you set the tone for all teachers that classroom management is a huge key for not only teachers to successfully teach, but seeing the growth of students. Thanks for sharing!
Oh finally someone talks about reality and gives suggestions that work!! Wonderful video, subscribed right away!
This is very interesting even for parents; not just teachers.
I'm not a teacher yet. I start subbing next week and I'm SO EXCITED!!! I just stumbled upon your channel and I find you to be such an inspiration!
Andrea THANK YOU so much for your kind words! Its definitely not a walk in the 'park but we can make it work! I’m a second year teacher and I really needed advice with classroom management. This was SO helpful!!
I love all your strategies! There are simple, yet powerful ways to enforce positive behaviors and respect inside the classroom.
I’m teaching high school in the fall and your videos are life saving 😭 working with teens your advice hits right on the nail!!

Wow, these are amazing! Thank you so much for sharing! I teach adults in a trade school and am going to a high school next year. I'm nervous but I'm so excited about it!
You must have the patience of a Saint and the strategies of a Mastermind when it comes to managing kids, very helpful, thank you.
Thank you for keeping it short and giving me these awesome management tips for my teachers!

Excellent video! Many thanks for these strategies! Very Helpful!
I really liked the concept of the train and the train tracks as I have never heard this before but it makes a lot of sense
Returning reader, great refresh!!!!! 🙏😇☕🥰
Love your videos!! 😍😍 thank you so much!
Could you do a video on the first day of school and „setting the tone“? Please! ❤️❤️
These are really nice tips. They are simple but golden. I can relate so much to everything that you say. Indeed, teaching is not just about content. Classroom management is the law of the education.

Yes!
I‘m looking forward to more of your videos!
Thank you so much for watching and supporting my channel, I appreciate it so so so much!!
as a substitute teacher working to being a highschool teacher soon these are super helpful!! thank you so much!
Yay! Thanks for your feedback and I am glad you found them helpful. Good luck with your career!

Thank you and thanks for watching! That is very true! In this field there is always something to learn!
This is an excellent video regarding classroom management, thank you.
This video was so helpful! I was nervous about correcting a student's negative/inappropriate behaviour as well, I am still studying/am a pre-service teacher so I still am learning how to affectively do it. :)
I'm so glad I found your channel!! I love your spunk and passion you have for being a teacher!! I can't wait to see more of your videos(-:

Yaaaay! Thank you!
Wow I learned alot by watching this. I saved your video to a playlist so I can re-watch your video for when the day comes when I become a teacher
I'm 23, and I started teaching. So I was really desperate, and then I watched your videos. Thank you!!! You're an inspiration
That's awesome! I am glad they are helpful and that they are giving you some hope! Good luck with everything
@@amandaros3 Thank you!!!

Great video! What are your classroom rules? Do you provide any warnings and what are the consequences after rules have been broken (ex.: detention, filling out a behavior reflection sheet, contact parents, sent to the Office, etc.)
Love your videos! Thank you for sharing your tips and strategies. I can’t wait to learn more! 💕
I am so glad this helped! I want to really come up with an etnire series on my channel for this. Definitely have to start brainstorming and get that in the works! Thank you so much for the support!

Thank you for your advice regarding classroom management! I needed that :-D
@@amandaros3 Thank you so much!!
This was SOOOOO helpful THANK YOU!!!!
Thank you!! :)
Can you make a video about how you differentiate your instruction?
Amanda more teaching videos please! If you show us some school stuff it would be great
Hey! Thanks for watching and for leaving a comment. If any ideas come to mind for what you will like to see next, please feel free to share. I'm definitely coming up with ideas to have a teaching video out real soon!
This is fantastic!
Thank you this was a big blessing !
Thank you for watching and enjoying it!
Such a good video, I’d love to see more on teaching!:)
