- Today we're taking a look at how to correctly create a Wah-Wah effect in your DAW. Why build a Wah for your DAW? Well, I think it's just good practice to research and recreate effects, you never know how that experience might benefit you creativity down the road.
For this tutorial we'll be building a Jim Dunlop Wah pedal in Ableton, although you can follow along with any DAW, as it simply requires a AutoFilter effect.
I also have two special guests in this video joining me for a funky wah jam session. The legendary John Medeski and Nate Smith are planning to stop by the studio to lay down a quick demo...last I heard they were just leaving the airport and should be here any minute!

Try this with Saturator in front of the Auto Filter, with Dynamic Tube at the end of the chain. It seems to give it some more warmth in the chain.

Super vid! Love the concept of making your own wah with a DAW! The wah will always be a unicorn of sorts. It can be fickle at best some days and then others it sounds amazing! I still have my original JD Cry Baby from 31 years ago! I took the feet off it years ago (After reading a Zakk Wylde article) to give it a bit more "Sweep" ... DON'T do that. Lol. It made it too sensitive in the toe down position and it turned off too easily. Great post my man!
HA! I've heard a few mods that just seem like they wouldn't be the greatest of ideas...for me, they just tend to fail at some point with the switch, or I lend it out and never get it back. My current one has a broken Battery case, but I run it off DC anyhow. If anything, at some point I should explore beyond the standard Jim Dunlop-- maybe try out a VOX wah someday?

This is great, but I can’t move that knob while I’m playing the guitar so how do you make it an auto wah while you’re playing? And I agree I mean it still doesn’t replace using a pedal while you’re playing, but it’s an next best thing.

there's also envelope follower so you can make autowah ;)
It took me YEARS before I discovered the magic of autowah. For the longest time I considered it a “lazy wah”
I was wrong, there are so many cool and creative things you can do with it!
