- A short segment in which Nelson Eddy tells Jack Paar that he loves Jeanette MacDonald and refutes old rumors of a feud. He admits he sees Jeanette "all the time" and also shares amusing anecdotes about filming "New Moon", "Sweethearts" and "Balalaika." When asked what Jeanette would say if asked whose legs were better, his or hers, Nelson replies that she'd say "I got better than you - and she does!" Despite the sound quality, which improves after the first number, this is a vital interview. Date: January 31, 1960.

Wow! Thanks a lot for posting this. I enjoyed the heck out of Nelson Eddy's quick humor. He was a personable interviewee and very clever! He remembered lots of details from his movies! I have never heard/seen him "in person;" only in movie roles, where I have always thought he was unfairly underrated. He has become one of my favorite actors no matter who he's starred with. Too bad he didn't feel more comfortable in acting, but it is concert singing's gain. (I also really like both Jeannette MacDonald and Ilona Massey!)
Nelson had a quick wit and a delightful sense of humor. Never realized that before watching this. Thanks for posting!

Nelson Eddy is a funny guy! Glad to hear him sing…my Nana sang in the Philadelphia Civic Opera in the later 1920’s when he was there.

Once Jeannette had married, she should have cut off any other man. if only both of them had been wise to fully completely cut ties with each other, once she got married. Sadly, they became adulterers and brought more troubles not just on themselves but on others around them as well.
One must also look at the fact that they were "handfast", you might say, to each other as of Fall of 1935 (long before any engagement or marriage to Gene Raymond) and that in 1938 they went to Mexico where Jeanette divorced Gene and married Nelson. While that might have had legality there, the backlash they faced upon returning to the studio and finalizing any needed legality in the states was squelched by the studio.
Life just isn’t always so simple and straightforward, especially in the hot-house/mad-house of Hollywood. As your bible would say, judge not lest…

@@maceddy You documented that Jeannette, in spite of her feelings, wisely was troubled by Nelson’s darker temper and rages and with good reason. It is a shame that either Nelson couldn’t learn to control his rages and misogyny better at the start or failing that that Jeannette didn’t have the wisdom of her elder sister to walk away from guys who were controlling or abusive or neglectful, but she remained married to Gene even to the end, though I don’t condone at all his abominable failure to love and protect his wife. Had Gene been as faithful and devoted and didn’t have violent rages, perhaps Jeannette would have finally let the past go. Or failing that, she should have been strong enough to reject both men and find a better man - it seems her ex before either Nelson and Gene was far more mature and remained a non-violent faithful friend to the end. They all had serious problems, but all of us today in the present can learn from their bad choices and behavior, and yet still enjoy their performances. I’m a fan of Nelson Eddy, but I won’t turn a blind eye to his behavior - likewise same for Jeannette, Gene, or anyone. God bless!
