At 89 years old I remember Jeanette and Nelson like it was yesterday, never again will the world be so fortunate to see a couple like nelson and Jeanette. To this day they bring tears of joy every time I hear them sing, I hope I see them on the other side.
This movie is Timeless. My Mother (Rest her Soul) was A lyric soprano and used to do voiceover for the actress that couldn't sing. She worked for MGM in the late 30's into the 50's. She was friends with Jeanette and many other great stars and often sang these songs to me when I was very young. Jeanette's voice was so amazing and reminds me so much of my mom's voice. Thanks for sharing this. It made me tear up. It's one of my most favorite movies of all time.
Sorry to be so offtopic but does anybody know a way to get back into an Instagram account?? I was stupid lost the account password. I would love any help you can give me!
My mother was a talented amateur soprano & this was one of her favorite songs too. Jeanette MacDonald is amazing & The duet is superb. Thanks for the memories.
My son, who is a musician, coined it perfectly when he said "Jeanette is the violin and Nelson is the cello" in this number. He gently dances all around her singing and fills it with his rich baritone. Love these two!! Young people who never saw their movies or heard their records will have the opportunity to see and hear these two "Golden Love Birds" on TCM in their 8 films together. It will never happen again in the movies and we are blessed to have it all on film for generations to come.
I agree with you wholeheartedly! This was 1935 - in the middle of The Great Depression. The MOVIES gave Americans a dose of happiness. Shirley Temple may have single-handedly healed the hearts and souls of a depressed country. Children have a way of doing that, don't they? Especially when they sing. I was an elementary school music teacher for 17 years. I was teaching them, true. And they were teaching ME! They taught me so much about myself - they taught ME to believe in myself because they believed in me. Having taught for so many years, it has become the gift that never stops giving. One of my first students recorded a special song with his singing group to cheer me during this pandemic and sent it to me. I became a blubbering fool. I loved my students and they loved me - Mister Seemore's Music Class. I told them this is the only when you'll have permission to be loud! They loved that. I have a dream...too. Children and singing are the antidote to heal our troubled country AND world. Music is the universal language! Enjoy these video clips I uploaded during my isolation. Blessings to you!🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺😍😍😍😍😍😍🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩💐💐💐💐💐💐💐
It's February 23, 2023, TCM just showed this fantastic movie again, thank you TCM. The blended voices of these two will live forever, thanks to the miracle of recording technology. The glory of these actors, movies, costumes will be enjoyed by many for decades to come. I'm 81, and still tear up at the magnificence of their talent.
What is the name of the movie to which you are referring? If it is still available somewhere on the internet I would love to see it. Can you help me by telling me the name of the movie from which it was taken? Thanks so much!!
Nelson`s harmony with all of his singing partners is beautiful. He sang with his partners-not AT them. The way he lowers his voice and weaves his voice in and around their voice, is like a beautiful dance. Lorraine
Gemini730 well, the credit for the gorgeous harmonies goes to the composer and arranger; but I'll happily agree that Mr. Eddy sings them very very beautifully!
Anybody here coming as I have, to enjoy a beautiful escape in the midst of isolation during the corona virus? I am alone and today is one of the harder days when something beautiful, joyful and uplifting is much needed. What better than this? Their music was before my time but my parents had some of their records. And as a wee girl, I avidly watched when any of their movies were screened on TV. What utter joy. I'm away to see if I can order one or two of their movies to escape with in these tough times and wherever their souls may be, gosh I thank them.
@George Papadopoulos Haha! Me too! The scene’s pretty cool, though, and their voices are just beautiful (even though they weren’t getting schtupped by Frankenstein! Haha).
If that beautiful performance isn't perfect then I don't know what beautiful music sounds like. No one will ever sing like Jeanette and Nelson. Isn't wonderful that they left these magnificent treasures behind them for us to love and appreciate to this day. I for one will always be thankful and I have been a fan for 60 years and always will be.
There will never be another janette and Nelson they were a one of a kind they had a love that was so special you couldn’t get anything better than they had it was destiny
This is my favorite duet. I fell in love with the first time I saw when I was 13. My mother introduced me the music and she introduced me to opera. my mom died during Covid and I miss her dearly. She was so poor growing up and we didn’t have a lot either but one thing she always said you can always find something good. We never went to an opera, cause we couldn’t afford it. I wish my mother had a better life than what she did breaks my heart couldn’t afford it.😢
My sister and I saw all of Jeanette and Nelsons films during the war (1939 - 1945) with our mother. We loved them both so much - they brought love and beauty into our war torn world. My mother would have loved to have been able to see and hear these posts. Thank you so much for allowing this old lady to remember those happy evenings spent watching and listening to two of the best loved singers of that time. Ida
I am only in my sixties, I am sure I must have been born 30 years too late as I love Nelson & Jeanette movies & singing. They were my mother's favourites.
Well, it doesn't get any better --- on of the great melodies ever penned ---- and the magnificent singing of Jeannette and Nelson. Thank heavens for recordings ---- their voices will live forever.
Well said Bill. I hope if there is a higher & better place, they are together as they so deserve to be, after all the obstacles they faced in their romance on earth..
My heart still melts and my Soul still rejoices at this what beauty what glorious wonderful voices how much I will always be so grateful for them. Thank you for posting this.
I watched this when i was younger, i couldn't take my eyes off the tele, it was the most amazing sound I'd heard....some songs will never die...nice one UA-cam
Used to great effect by Mel Brooks in "Young Frankenstein", and beautifully sung by Madeline Kahn, herself a trained opera singer. It's fun to hear it in its original incarnation, beautifully sung by the king and queen of the operetta.
That's why I'm here. Grew up with YF and got curious about where the original version of the song came from. Khan was hilarious. She finally found the key that unlocked her heart...ha!
When I've finally had it with the mess this world has become, I turn this on or Indian love call and it takes me to a beautiful world is supreme peace and sanity. This is what entertainers were, at one time, gifted at doing.
Naturally we can't have high-quality singers and high-quality audio in the same era; can you imagine these two with today's recording equipment? GAAAH.
Came here for the Young Frankenstein reference; what a lovely song. I’ve only ever hear the first line or so, sung by Madeline Kahn. Thanks for posting this.
Because unfortunately, most of the past and current generations are born and raised without culture and class. Today it's mostly rap; the loud, intrusive jungle sounds with defiant, vulger words and no music whatsoever!
I believe it is the aggregate that makes this performance so special and unique. Victor Herbert wrote this beautiful melody . Rida Johnson Young contributed these incredibly beautiful lyrics . The chemistry between Nelson Eddy and Jeannette MacDonald is a thing of beauty. When this all comes together we are blessed with something that will endure and give us all joy forever.
My favourite couple of all time. Still l get teary when l hear them. Naughty Marietta was a favourite of mine and could watch it over and over. Love them.
I just think that this couple, singing this song, with its wonderful lyrics combined with their beautiful voices, and harmonies is sublime. We feel there passions that they endanger and all this combined with the chemistry and beauty of their delivery. It is a moment in film and song that should not be forgotten and should be treasured for all times.
What a pair. Unrequited love never had it so good. What beautiful singing voices....and their lives together offscreen was something else.....both caught in loveless marriages.
I don't know about Nelson's marriage. But Jeanette was married to Gene Raymond, who I've read was gay and had a romantic relationship with actor Buddy Rogers. From letters and diaries it is clear that Nelson and Jeanette had a lifelong secret romantic relationship. Neither Nelson nor Jeanette ever had children.
Keep in mind, Nelson tried to demand for Jeannette to give up her career and control her and had a horrible explosive temper. Jeannette was turned off by that.
My mother and father used to sing this and Indian Love Call a long time ago. I can’t believe I’m listening to this celestial music now. It brings on the tears.
I love this film. It’s romantic, lyrical and funny by turn. Personally, I am reluctant to believe many of the stories that are told about Hollywood stars but I do believe that Jeanette McDonald and Nelson Eddy were romantically involved at various times in their lives. The chemistry between them burst through the screen.
2019. Ida Harris wrote that they were the best loved singers of that time. My Mother and Father were fans of them as well. I am 75, and over the pass years have enjoyed there movies and music very much. Beautiful people and music never die.
When I was 7 years old I heard this song, it touched my very heart and soul. I ran to my best friends house to tell her about this wonderful song I had just heard and how amazing it was. I was entranced. I remember telling the story that they were on the stairs and clutching my heart in the telling of the story. The song stayed with me for years. I lost it along the way but have come back to it. I remembered that feeling that that song gave me as a very young child and how exquisitely beautiful it made me feel. 'Tis love and love alone the world is seeking'. How perfectly true. If we all felt loved, so very loved no one would wish to harm another person. Only love can make you feel that sense of utter beauty, peace and serenity.
M deBhulbh they were the GREATEST SINGING PAIR I ever heard or watched- I don't know how many people are aware that they had a young son who died early in childhood- they never were able to fully recover from their loss as would anyone who has lost a child.
This, and "Sweetheart, Sweetheart, Sweetheart, Will You Remember" were my grandparents' song. Their song. "Will You Remember," from Maytime, came out in 1927, when they were courting and as a child, I heard these songs and all the magnificent music of Sigmund Romberg and Victor Herbert played continually on the Victrola. I still cannot listen to any of it without dissolving in tears. The most beautiful love songs ever written, and no one ever did them better than Eddy and MacDonald. Fabulous.
Very pretty! From what movie is the video? As an aside: The style of the camera angles, etc seems still influenced by silent films. I take it the film is a fairly early talkie. The effect is like listening to an incredible singer in a silent film.
I am now a 65 yr old single Dad..And Jeanette and Nelson were brought into my life around 8 or 9 years through my beloved Grandmother..Here I am almost 60 years later, having the treasure of owning their top films(Naughty Marietta,Rose Marie,Maytime(#1) and Sweethearts)..through my 4000 film collection,If I could only keep a few,ALL of the films I mentioned I'd keep plus HOW GREEN WAS MY VALLEY..Watching the scene in Naughty Marietta where Jeanette and Nelson sing Ah Sweet Mystery still instanlt reduce me to a blubbering mess.. with every passing year, the intensity of emotion for these films is almost beyond endurance...
I was raised on the Nelson Eddy movies & even named rose marie after his movie ,& when he came to town I even got meet him That was a real treat. He was the nicest person you ever want to meet
I always love to hear and see jeanette macdonald and Nelson Eddy in their movies, their voices are a gift from God, they were truly blessed and in love, my 8 year old granddaughter kim, sings their music and loves it, im 79 now and can't stop hearing them and my grandchildren love them too, wish we could watch their movies again free, everyone would love them, a true love story, sad ending for them. Bring back their music and their movies ❤
more than beautiful. I remember my aunt playing in the piano and the family singing it, for it was one of family´s favorite and for me a evergreen one. Thanks for sharing it.
I just do love both . My mum used to sing their songs then I started watching their films when I was young . Bought my mum an album which I now have myself on cd . You don’t get singing duos like this anymore . I wasn’t even born during their hey day . But they will always remind me of my mum . God rest her soul
The divine Jeanette & the wonderful Nelson, radiating love & beauty in its purest form! It doesn't get any better than this. I feel sorry for anyone who can't appreciate just how exquisite these two were. Thanks for the upload.
Musicals are not as they were .now that was opera.💖💖💖💖💖🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊Beautiful. Rest in peace to the best two of the best singers Jeanette and Nelson thank you for your beautiful voice Amen🕊🕊🌹🌹🦋🦋✌💖💖💖🙏🕊🦋
Aloha Jeanette MacDonald and Eddy Nelson !!!! Love your duet "Ah Sweet Mystery Of Life." You both compliment each other perfectly !!!!!!!!!!! Grateful fan, Robert S.J. Hu September 25, 2020.
There has never been such a phenomenal singing duo before or after. Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy, thankfully, are immortal through their unbelievable chemistry on screen. I never tire of watching and hearing them together. And my strong belief is that they were deeply in love with each other privately. Nelson Eddy had, unfortunately for him, a Victorian-thinking mother, who run her son's life. She considered Jeanette MacDonald to be a wanton woman, because she was an actress. So the love of these two was doomed, because of that. All their movies are true gems to watch. They are brilliantly restored. You can find them all on Amazon. "May Time", "Naughty Marietta", "New Moon", "Rose Marie", "Girl From The Golden West ", "Sweethearts". You will find all movies with Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy unbelievably fresh Uplifting, calming, mesmerizing. I guarantee, they do not disappoint, now, 80 plus years since they were made.
@@UTOOBISMYTOOB jeanette was never a wanton woman ,nelson loved her trully and called her angel .as for mrs isabel eddy she was great friends with jeanette and considered her to be the only woman for her dear son who highly appreciated his dearest mummy, for she was his best friend and helper in everything,he said that it was she who had made him as a personality and etc.
My Dad used to say they were the best. But he also told us that that music would be round forever.Unfortuntly most young people today have not heard of them.
Her voice sounded a violin playing. What a beautiful voice she had .absolutely beautiful this song shes singing those high notes.👍💖..great film Naughty Maria.with Nelson Eddy. Both voices together 💖💖💖💖says it all.Now that was singing .rest in peace to them both .they may be gone but there not forgotten amen 🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏👍💖💖💖💖
And you taught that magic did'nt exist ...open your ears to Nelson and Jeanette and you will believe. My mom used to cry listening to their movies in the old days as i sat on her lap . Now i know why as i cry myself listening to these angels from the past.
+LeadMeToPeace Jeanie My Dad died in 2004, but he gave me a beautiful legacy of the joy of such songs as this. I know all the words from listening to him singing in the bathroom. Funny, I never ever realised how good Jeanette was until I listened to this song.
magnifient, stupendous and finbally glorious to hear them together again is just the best life an ffer to be honest. loved it trememncously. god bless u for posiing our jeanette andnelson THANK YOU

@meaningfultv the name of the movie is Naughty Marietta.

Gemini730 - You are 100% correct. Nelson Eddy harmonized like no one else. I give the credit to him not the arranger or composer.
They were really special. Not to be seen again .
Wow, you wrote this as if it was poetry. Beautifully written.
The perfect man to his lady, like Fred Astaire.
I am 78 and am so glad i had this music in my life, thank you

I have many of Eddy's and McDonald's records and can agree with you there voices are very special
In 1942 with 7 cents in my pocket I was transported from NYC slum life, So what if is Kitch! It is Haute cuisine Kitch!

I still cannot listen to any of it without dissolving in tears. The most beautiful love songs ever written, and no one ever did them better than Eddy and MacDonald. Fabulous.
One of the most beautiful songs ever written by Herbert.
One of the most beautiful songs ever written full stop.
Victor Herbert converted to Catholicism and this was written about the Catholic Belief in the Eucharist. The Eucharist was the "Mystery Of Life"
This song never ceases to bring tears to my eyes when I listen - Thank you Victor Herbert and Jeannette and Nelson.......
I agree it is lovely. But never let yourself watch "Young Frankenstein"!
Very pretty! From what movie is the video?
As an aside: The style of the camera angles, etc seems still influenced by silent films. I take it the film is a fairly early talkie. The effect is like listening to an incredible singer in a silent film.
Alec Bass movie was Naughty Marietta 1938
mike vnv "Naughty Marietta" was released in 1935.
Cecil Williams I
My siblings and I bought this album for my dad on his birthday back in the 60's. I remember him playing it over and over again.
Oh thank God! I feel so much better now. Nelson Eddy and Jeanette Mac Donald always make me tear up.
The classic of all classics. The look of love on his face....
Cissy funk bought me here.
What a wonderful duet this is.I never tir of hearing it.Thank you.
I was raised on the Nelson Eddy movies & even named rose marie after his movie ,& when he came to town I even got meet him

more than beautiful. I remember my aunt playing in the piano and the family singing it, for it was one of family´s favorite and for me a evergreen one. Thanks for sharing it.
I love this movie and I love both Jennet MicDonald and Nelson Eddy's voices. I grow up watching most of the movies that they starred together in.
I just do love both . My mum used to sing their songs then I started watching their films when I was young . Bought my mum an album which I now have myself on cd . You don’t get singing duos like this anymore . I wasn’t even born during their hey day . But they will always remind me of my mum . God rest her soul
Jeanette sung this at the Wee Kirk o Heather Church Forest Lawn during Jean Harlow's funeral.
Actually it was Nelson Eddy who sang that song, Jeannette McDonald sang The Indian Love Song at the services.
très belle voix. Aucun film ne passse a la télé de cette magnifique artiste ainsi que de nelson EDY

Aloha Jeanette MacDonald and Eddy Nelson !!!! Love your duet "Ah Sweet Mystery Of Life." You both compliment each other perfectly !!!!!!!!!!! Grateful fan, Robert S.J. Hu September 25, 2020.
I continue to enjoy your loving serenade !!!! Am now 80 years old. May 13, 2022.

When we search best duets of all time, these two are not there.
Reason?
Head and shoulders above them all.
WOW!
Just love to listen to these two had beautiful voices. Ihave always loved opera. My sister could singg like this.
Jeanette looks absolutely beautiful singing to someone she really loves in real life nelson is totally captured by her how beautiful no better
What gorgeous voices from the 1930s.
My Dad used to say they were the best. But he also told us that that music would be round forever.Unfortuntly most young people today have not heard of them.

THEY WERE MENT TO SING TO TOGETHER-- JUST BEAUTIFUL. I STILL WATCH THEIR MOVIES.
Beautiful voices!
interesting at the number of recent comments since this movie was made in 1935. Shows that good music and singing endures
Thank God.
Richard McMahon Old movie channels help a lot too.
Michael Whisman lol
I agree!! Naughty Marietta's still fresh and great 83 years later being enjoyed by fans such as a sixteen year-old me!!!
And you taught that magic did'nt exist ...open your ears
to Nelson and Jeanette and you will believe.
My mom used to cry listening to their movies in the
old days as i sat on her lap . Now i know why as i
cry myself listening to these angels from the past.
I will always love Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy.
+LeadMeToPeace Jeanie My Dad died in 2004, but he gave me a beautiful legacy of the joy of such songs as this. I know all the words from listening to him singing in the bathroom. Funny, I never ever realised how good Jeanette was until I listened to this song.
