Another great video Tim. I had seen where C5 sold those speed movers / pull type box blades under the Brown name, mine was under the Flat out name. Had to chuckle a bit when looking at the areal shot of the field you were in and then watching you try and move that dirt with that little 3pt box blade. That would have really taken a long long loooong time. Glad you brought out some larger reinforcements. LOL
That 8ft Brown was basically a yellow version of my 8ft flat out I traded in on a 12-foot Garfield this past summer. The C5s are good units, and I really moved a lot of dirt with mine over the past couple years.

I have been hauling horses going on 6 years. I'm still amazed how much $$$ people poor into them. I haul to alot of the Arabian horse shows all over the country. Just to get them there and back is a big expense. The one farm sent 150 total horses from Ohio., and California to Tulas. I never knew how many horses are moving around the country all the time. Wish I could post some pictures of some of the arenas, trucks, and show setups.

That's a big project! The soil conditions look just right to do the work, a little dusty which is better than being too wet.

Fun to watch, and that soil looks like fun to work compared to the big rocky gravely glacier till I'm stuck with. Obviously time wise it would have been nice to have a dozer but sometimes it's fun to just run equipment and just chip away at it.
Thanks for a differient view of soil prep. Having a clay soil for vegetables in my local it's interesting to see a sandy soil being prepared for horse use.
Makes me think about how they put the horse arena in at one of our county parks.
I guess that if you have to have a playground, then having the Rockies in the background it a wonderful plus.
Always enjoy all your videos. As a relatively new compact utility tractor owner I would appreciate more on tractor service and maintenance. As an example, I have a 5 year old green tractor with 240 hours on it that regularly requires paint touch up ( over a dozen cans of spray paint) and yet the tractors in your videos always look pristine. Just today I needed to replace one of the hydraulic lines for the power steering. I could have used some of your guidance. The line was worn due to poor engineering design. Access to the top end of the fitting was nearly impossible (2018 3033R). JD Service said I needed an 18mm wrench when i ordered the part. An online Green Tractor forum said I needed a 21mm wrench. So I
ordered a set of stubby wrenches to tackle the job. As it turned out I needed a 22mm wrench that I had to modify to fit the ti😢ght space. Sure could have used your expertise! My best to you and your family. Especially miss videos that included your dad.
Thanks for watching. We have done lots of ‘fix it’ videos on the 3520 auction tractor…including painting the entire roof professionally with the help of my neighbor. We showed replacing tie rod ends, steering cylinder, seat suspension, etc.
I’m sure we haven’t covered everything, but make sure you have watched all of our videos that pertain to service…we have a bunch.

I'm only about 3 hours south of where you are and yes, our soil at the surface is much different than yours. Ours is a volcanic silt, powder, and it's quite dense. If you mix calichi clay with it it will set much like cement.

We have extremely fine sand, so very familiar with the issues you ran into. One of the biggest is the box blade digging in and cutting too deep once the sand gets stirred up.
Tilling first isn't a terrible idea; without tilling the material movement/cutting in of the box blade can change dramatically on top of the vegetative layer vs what it does once the vegetation is cut away. Tilling helps to mitigate that. It also helps prevent the gouging into the sand by clumps of vegetation that get caught up in the box blade.
I've found that you can do fairly well with the box blade more set as if you're smoothing with it rather than cutting; that helps prevent the box blade from digging in. Also remove any extra weights that may be on the box blade to 'assist' in tougher soils.
The other problem with sand it resists spilling over the top when the box gets full. Instead, as your video shows, it just keeps building up in front of the box until the tractor bogs down.
In our sand (very very fine 'surgar' sand) there is a point where it is so fluffed up it can't really be effectively worked - it's light driving on talcum power. The only 'cure' is to give it a day to settle/repack, and start working the site again.
I don't have one, but I suspect a land rake or a section of chain link fence works best for smoothing/getting a level surface in sand.
It’s hard for me to fathom getting a lot of rain one day, and raising dust the next. That soil is probably perfect for that application and their venture. Interesting project. Blessings.
A ‘lot’ of rain may have been 0.2”…but still, we were shocked.
It looks like that kinda terrain where half of the month its so dusty you need a facemask to ride a horse on it.
That 5 series is a beast
Whoever is running the laser needs some surveyors spray paint. Then they can walk the field in a grid pattern marking highs and lows and grade. Circles for low. Triangles for High and straight lines for grade. Or whatever symbols everyone agrees on. Giving the guy on the tractor something to look at will speed things up alot
Cool and helpful info as I am going to level a similar size area in NY State.. Maybe DozerTime with Tim may have made quicker work? I just looked into renting a D5 and with transport it was about $700 for a day. Might be a better plan than trying to use my Kubota L3901. But I am not sure.
We have a 40 acre horse farm in western ny. We board about 35 horses and hold rodeo events as well. We've been in buissness for decades.. We have a 100x70 indoor arena and a 100x100 outdoor.. Our outdoor needs to be redone its just old and tough to manage with our climate.. This spring we are going to do a make over. I will do alot myself but think I'm going to hire someone for the finishing.. Not looking forward to the expense but it has to be done.. Great video Tim . Maybe we will see you on a horse sometime 😂
I suspect you could do it….but you also have many other things to do. Paying someone is sometimes the best answer.

im sure you understand but im not sure the video explained it ....2' high or low on one side might mean you only need to move 1' of dirt to cut, fill and balance ....or a similar calculation...it takes some information and calculation to balance and level a site

In fact, in one of the scenes, you see me scraping off another inch of one of my reference humps to indicate to the team how cutting down the high side had lowered the overall grade requirement.

Yes. Still have. This summer has been devoted to the pond project, and I haven’t been able to use the tractors as much. Having said that, we did use it with the backhoe early in the pond project.

I really miss the projects with the one series. The projects that require larger tractors and sometimes expensive attachments just make me think it would be better to rent equipment that matches the job due to expense and time.

moving a lot of dirt
So if you have a 2ft difference, thats only one foot of cut. The lower end doesn't need to come up 2ft. The top needs to come down 1ft and bottom up 1ft. Making a 2ft pile of dirt to match up would be incorrect.
I kept trimming the top of my humps as we cut more. I do not know how to calculate or estimate the final grade up front. More math than I can do.
So, I use the approach of cut and fill until you reach a balance.
Unfortunately, we had to leave before complete, so we couldn’t show the final product.
I DID talk through the approach with the landowner who continued to work through the weekend with the loaner equipment.
Anyway, the main point of the grade humps was to visualize the amount of slope left in the area. My helpers could hardly believe that there was 2’ of difference. I had to do something to illustrate.
Please please please don’t let them use that tilled up organic as fill… that’s just a recipe for disaster. :(
Plenty of time for the organic to degrade. It won’t be built upon soon.
The sport they are talking about is not for the middle class or up&coming class. I have talked to real horse people whom have been doing it for years. the expense to do it right leaves people with two decisions your wealthy and can afford it or every extra dollar you make is going to your horse for training, medical, grooming, boarding and this includes your extra time as a rider. Their is no cheap way. You are up against young people that have been doing it since childhood and they are all killers in competition. Ask a horse person how many times they have seen someone get into horses to be done in a year. Please do your research before taking on any horse even if for pleasure it’s a 24/7 endeavor. The young lady in the video could probably a-test to the challenges.
